In this new video essay, Zach Barr (they/them) discusses the history of "Papp's Pirates," the 1980 Shakespeare in the Park production that changed everything.

Adrian Danchig-Waring and Amanda Hankes, two dancers with the NYCB, stopped by Google NYC to discuss their upcoming performance, Dancers' Choice. The Discussion is moderated by Meghan Kent and hosted by Lee Stimmel.
New York City Ballet will present its third Dancers' Choice program on Sunday, June 12 at 7:30 PM. A benefit for NYCB's Dancers' Emergency Fund, the event was conceived by NYCB's Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins in 2008 to give the Company's dancers an opportunity to plan an NYCB performance. This year Soloist Adrian Danchig-Waring and Corps de Ballet member Amanda Hankes will oversee the evening's programming and casting, as well as the marketing and promotional efforts.
The framework for this year's programming will be the role of the "muse" in art. The evening will specifically explore the theme of woman as muse- a sentiment echoed in Balanchine's famous quote "Ballet is Woman"- as well as demonstrate the theme of Stravinsky as muse- a nod towards Balanchine's frequent collaborator. These themes will be showcased during the evening's performance in a series of pas de deux selections from George Balanchine's Agon and Rubies from Jewels, Angelin Preljocaj's La Stravaganza, and the only performance this season of Christopher Wheeldon's Liturgy. The evening will also include George Balanchine's iconic work Apollo, as well as exciting debut performances in nearly every role.
As in previous years, the evening will also showcase the dancers' off stage talents featuring a Dancers' Choice logo painted by Danchig-Waring, video content and accompanying soundtrack produced by the dancers, and a souvenir program with photographs by Principal Dancers Janie Taylor and Wendy Whelan.
The Dancers' Choice evening will feature special ticket prices of $50 for the Orchestra, First, Second, and Third Rings, and $25 for all other locations. Proceeds from the evening will support NYCB's Dancers' Emergency Fund, which was initiated in 1980 by Jerome Robbins to assist individual dancers who have had personal emergencies or unexpected hardships.
Tickets to all performances and events are available at the David H. Koch Theater Box Office, www.nycballet.com and via Center Charge at 212-721-6500.

Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 – April 1, 1991) was an American modern dancer and choreographer whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture.
She danced and choreographed for over seventy years. Graham was the first dancer ever to perform at the White House, travel abroad as a cultural ambassador, and receive the highest civilian award of the USA: the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In her lifetime she received honors ranging from the Key to the City of Paris to Japan's Imperial Order of the Precious Crown. She said, in the 1994 documentary "The Dancer Revealed", "I have spent all my life with dance and being a dancer. It's permitting life to use you in a very intense way. Sometimes it is not pleasant. Sometimes it is fearful. But nevertheless it is inevitable."

I am soloist with Miami City Ballet a former soloist with the New York City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.
On my channel I make ballet, beauty, and lifestyle videos for everyone of all ages. My goal is help dancers improve and achieve their dreams as well as open up the ballet world to non dancers. You will see many different kinds of how-to videos here including makeup, hair, ballet workouts and exercises, Q and A sessions, lifestyle advice, and DIY on this channel.
