Top 10 Slavery Movies of All Time
In this video, we will show you a top 10 list of the best slavery movies ever made. One of the darkest and most shameful aspects of human history is the fact that slavery was once such a very prominent and commonplace aspect of everyday day life, especially in places like the United States. And while most places have now outlawed such practices, it still remains a fascinating topic to think about and to dissect. Which is part of the reason it’s appeared in so many movies over the years.
Of course it should go without saying that many movies which look at slavery focus on that which was found in the United States of America back during the 1700’s and 1800’s. For this video I have selected the most popular movies throught the history, basing on their comercial success and relevance. Before seeing the video you should know a few things:
- I know that I forgot a lot of very important movies in the history of the cinema, but you have to understand that I cannot include all because the video would be incredibly long.
- As I said in the last video, feel free to mention the movies that I have forgotten in the comments section to expand the video content. In the same way, if any date is incorrect you can correct it.
- I have not selected those films that marked the development of a genre or film stream. I have selected the most popular and better known ones by people. That's why I've included so many American movies and less of other countries, because a lot of the most famous movies throughout history are from the U.S.
- As I did in ‘’The evolution of music’’ video, this video is made with the intention of collecting the most famous films of the history in one place, and for people to discover new works that perhaps did not know from this wonderful art.
Again, this is gonna be a long ride throught the history of cinematography, so take a sit and enjoy.
Thanks for watching!

So to celebrate 100K Subscribers, here’s a small video of the 50 Greatest Films I have ever seen.
These are different from my favourite 50 films. What differentiates both lists is that my favourite movies are solely based on my taste and how much I like to re-watch them; the greatest ones I believe, hold greater cinematic value when gauged against the historical development of the medium. These films are the ones that have the highest cinematic quality in terms of their medium specificity, narrative and cinematic innovation and relevance along with historical and cultural legacy. There are a lot of films in common with my favourite list. It also contains movies that I acknowledge are among the greatest, but I don’t necessarily enjoy them. It’s like you know how particular food has excellent nutritional value, but you still don’t like eating it.
Of course, I haven’t seen every single film ever made. These 50 are from all the movies I have seen so far. You will find films common to many such lists, along with some bold additions. From 50 to 11, films are arranged based on their release year. From 10 to 1 is an ordered list I consider to be the greatest 10.

1908 to 1917 was a decade of major change in the film business. Here are a few highlights:
American cinema saw an expansion out of New Jersey and New York, into Jacksonville, Florida, for warmer weather; it then took hold in Hollywood, California, between 1909 and 1915. “One-reeler” films (1000ft in length, or about 10 to 12 minutes of runtime) gave way to feature-length epics, tinted with different colors to match the mood of each scene. Intertitles containing lines of dialogue began to be used consistently from 1908 onward. Studio cameras became more portable, and 35mm film was accepted as an industry standard.
The “star system” began in 1909, emphasizing actors over plot lines to promote films. African-American movie makers entered the market, as well as more women directors. Film-making also began to take hold in Russia, India, and Latin America. 1917 marks the beginning of the Classical Hollywood era with films characterized by a formulaic narrative and style, particularly through major film studios like Universal and Paramount.
In the following decade, we’ll finally enter into an era that some people alive today were around to see the film premieres.

In fact, films like the wild Quentin Tarantino fable Django Unchained, the historical epic Lincoln, the courtroom drama Amistad, and the harrowing tale of 12 Years a Slave all do this excellently. But this isn’t the only form of slavery which has been seen on screen as the practice has been found in other parts of the world too.
And that’s how we got movies like Spartacus, the true story of a Thracian slave who stood up against the Roman Empire back around the time of Jesus Christ. Or Ben Hur, Charlton Heston’s classic epic about a Jewish slave doing his best to become a free man in the same time period. Hell, we’ve even seen movies like 1969’s Burn! which focus on a slave revolt which took place in the Caribbean during the mid-19th century.

Of course it should go without saying that many movies which look at slavery focus on that which was found in the United States of America back during the 1700’s and 1800’s.
