History
Limestone was incorporated as a town on March 17, 1869, and was named for regional limestone deposits.
General Mark Trafton
General Mark Trafton is known as one of the founders of the town of Limestone. Trafton was born July 4, 1785, in York County, Maine. He was educated in public schools and became a leading citizen in Bangor, prominent in civil and military affairs. When a young man, he was commissioned captain of cavalry and served in the War of 1812. He was afterward brigadier-general of the state militia. He was a land agent for the eastern and northern sections of Maine before the office was opened in Bangor.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

The town is best known for being the home of the Loring Air Force Base, the base was closed in 1994. It was one of the largest bases of the U.S. Air Force's Strategic Air Command during its existence. I went there at an airshow in 1976 when I was in the air cadets, we were part of the airshow, doing a marching parade. It's now a public airport.

Abandoned Maine: Loring Air Force Base #1
This is part 1 of my sister Titia and I exploring the former Loring Air Force Base back in October 2021. We entered through the south entrance which is why we wound up starting at the motor pool, fuel tanks, coal bunker, etc. This part of the base tended to be the most run down and vandalized.
