How to Make/Build a Lifter or Ionocraft
A step-by-step guide to making a lifter/ionocraft, a small, very lightweight, triangular ion wind propelled device powered with a high voltage and substantial current power supply. This uses an aluminum foil skirt for the bottom electrode, a 30 gauge (30 AWG) bare wire for the top electrode and balsa wood for the support structure. The glue is cyanoacrylate. The means of propulsion is ion wind (also called ion cloud or electric wind.)
I also demonstrate some high voltage safety features, how to work safely with high voltage.

Ion Lifter - Ionocraft
My coworker, Alan Fontenot, made an ionocraft. High voltage powers the metal base (collector) and a thin wire (corona) a few inches above the base. The corona ionizes the air by stripping the electrons from it, which causes the ionized air to repel from the corona wire and attract to the collector base, providing thrust. This is the same principle used in ionic air purifiers...and yes we smelled that familiar ozone smell.

How Ion Propulsion, Lifters and Ionocrafts Work
How ion propulsion in lifters, my Star Trek Enterprise model and other ionocrafts work, basically how ion wind works in these types of devices. This shows how the electric field between a sharp object connected to a smooth object cause movement in the direction of the sharp object and an ion wind in the opposite direction. To create this electric field I use my homemade high voltage power supply.

Materials needed (see the video for the dimensions):
- aluminum foil, the same one use in your kitchen. Use the lightweight one, not the heavy duty one.
- bare, uninsulated very thin wire. It should be 30 gauge (AWG) or thinner.
- balsa wood 1/16" x 1/16"
- thread
- cyanoacrylate glue or krazy glue
For the power supply see the links given above.

This ion propelled craft is capable of much better performance than in this video, but it still lifted itself into the air and the non-conductive safety tether goes visibly completely loose each time the craft is energized.
Here is a HD version of this video:
https://youtu.be/GIO9xRSFHLA
Thie invention was independently verified to lift its onboard power supply by the science correspondent of NPR and a large number of officials over the years. Videos and news programs are provided that explain clearly how it works by well-known physics.
The craft also has two US patents, number 10,119,527 (Self Contained Ion Powered Aircraft) and US Patent # 11,161,631 for the (Ion Propelled Vehicle), that also explain clearly the physics of how it lifts its power supply against Earth's gravity.
Here is a link with the host/science correspondent of NPR and WKSU Jeff Saint Clair explaining how this ion thruster works with onboard power:
https://www.wksu.org/health-science/2020-02-10/exploradio-an-oberlin-inventor-pushes-the-limits-of-ion-powered-flight
There are many better videos of the invention, over 39 on this YouTube channel so please see them if you would like. Most of the videos of these devices demonstrate the crafts with no safety tether above, and a stick is waved all around to show that point clearly, along with launching it from a glass table.
It's not clear why this flight was promoted over other better footages of the craft. You can see better flights of the craft on this channel.
Air breathing ion propulsion using large external power supplies has been around since about 1950. It was previously considered almost impossible for ion propulsion to develop sufficient thrust to lift its power supply. The thrust to weight ratio had to be increased by several orders of magnitude (at least 100s of times), so it was a significant challenge...
This version is called the Self-Contained Ion Powered (propelled) Aircraft, Charlene Model. This model of the craft was named after an investor's mother. This footage shows the second earliest flight of the craft outdoors. The earliest outdoor flight was done over a glass table verified with no overhead safety tether. There is video of that flight on this channel.
When tie downs are placed below the craft only, they are ordinarily set for about 2 feet high or less, so as to prevent rough landings of the prototypes. Placing a safety tether above the craft, rather than just the usual tie downs below it, allowed it to be flown much higher, and it also functions like a springy landing gear. In this video of the craft, it was only operating on partial power as there was a slight temporary power loss.
Even though there is an online claim to the contrary, these crafts are legally and factually the first ion propelled heavier than aircrafts with onboard power. They have been independently verified by many officials since 2006 and the patents are in effect since 2014 specifically for lifting their power supplies against Earth's gravity and other improvements to ion propulsion.
This ion thruster has the highest efficiency and thrust for its weight, of any ion thruster by many times over. It will fly for hours with additional added wings or even longer with solar energy and no extra wings. Currently state of the art solar cells are more than powerful enough!
Here is a video of the craft lifting two small optional added propellant tanks with no overhead tether. They will enable it to fly in a space as well as Earth's atmosphere!
https://youtu.be/b56LgDphLzE
Along with the patents and website, the comments sections have additional technical details and further explanations of the physics of its operation.
Here also is a shortcut to past flight footage of the craft making a nearly 2-minute-long continuous VTOL flight indoors. Additionally, there are videos of many other prolonged flights on this YouTube channel with officials present. If you click "sort by oldest" under the video tab, you can see all of them.
https://youtu.be/Qdg0_hjuksQ
For newbies, here is a link to a MythBusters episode showing a simple ion propelled craft, with a large external power supply, in action. Their craft, a popular science experiment, is called an ion lifter. It is shown flying at about 17 minutes into their video:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7u6onn
Here is also a 40-minute-long interview hosted by rocket scientist Bradley Whistance, where I explain the details of how this device works:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5PPF6K81o8
An improved gyro system will soon to be installed. It is anticipated to allow the craft to fly with complete stability soon.

The video shows an electrostatic levitator or ionocraft built by Javier Ros, a student of electrical engineering. It consists of a 0,1 mm diameter copper wire positive electrode and an aluminium foil negative electrode. It is fed by a high voltage power supply which reaches 20 kV. It weighs 2 grams and it can lift weights up to 1 gram.
