Elections to the council are held every four years, with all of the 41 seats, representing 21 wards, on the council being filled. After being controlled by the Liberal Democrats since 1991, the Conservative party regained a majority at the 2011 election. Although, subsequent defections of Conservative councillors to UKIP and the Liberal Democrats left the council in no overall control. However in the Council election on the 7th May 2015 the Conservatives regained control with an increased majority and heavy loses for the Liberal Democrats. The current composition is as follows.
Lewes/ˈluːᵻs/ is the county town of the administrative county of East Sussex, in England, and historically of all of Sussex. It is a civil parish and is the centre of the Lewes local government district. The settlement has a history as a bridging point and as a market town, and today as a communications hub and tourist-orientated town. At the 2001 census it had a population of 15,988.
History
Archaeological evidence points to prehistoric dwellers in the area. Scholars think that the Roman settlement of Mutuantonis was here, as quantities of artefacts have been discovered in the area. The Saxons built a castle, having first constructed its motte as a defensive point over the river; they gave the town its name.
Lewes was the site of the first European settlement in Delaware, a whaling and trading post that Dutch settlers founded on June 3, 1631 and named Zwaanendael (Swan Valley). The colony had a short existence, as a local tribe of Lenape Native Americans wiped out the 32 settlers in 1632.
The area remained rather neglected by the Dutch until, under the threat of annexation from the English colony of Maryland, the city of Amsterdam made a grant of land at the Hoernkills (the area around Cape Henlopen, near the current town of Lewes) to a group of Mennonites for settlement in 1662. A total of 35 men were to be included in the settlement, led by a Pieter Cornelisz Plockhoy of Zierikzee and funded by a sizable loan from the city to get them established. The settlement was established in 1663, but the timing of the settlement was terrible: In 1664, the English wrested New Netherland from the Dutch, and they had the settlement destroyed with British reports indicating that “not even a nail” was left there.

Lewes is a most interesting town further enhanced by The Sussex Guild shop and gallery in Southover Grange, a splendid 17th century building beside the beautiful Grange Gardens. In the summer it is a delight to sit out under the old mulberry tree or savour the heady scent of the magnificent magnolia.
Adjacent to the gallery there is a very good refreshments kiosk which is open during the summer months, providing an excellent selection of sandwiches, drinks and delicious homemade cakes.
Lewes has long been a town associated with the arts. Perhaps the most well-known connection was with the Bloomsbury Group who were based a short distance outside the town at Charleston Farmhouse. The main players in the group were the innovative writer Virginia Woolf and the painters, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
Around them was a coterie of famous associates who were highly influential on the arts scene of the early 20th century, particularly Roger Fry who was one of the original champions of post-impressionist movements in this country.
Anne of Cleves House, a beautiful timber framed building dating back to the 15th century, is located very near to the Shop & Gallery. It has a lovely local history museum with many fine examples of traditional Sussex crafts – Wealden iron, Sussex pottery, some textiles and furniture and plenty more!
There is metered parking on the road, free on Sundays and various public car parks are just a short walk away.
We welcome visitors to the Guild Shop in Southover Grange 364 days a year.
On-street parking can be found around Southover Grange and there are various other car parks in Lewes within a 5 to 15 minute walk. We are only a few minutes level walk from Lewes train station too.
