Lesbos (/ˈlɛzbɒs/, US/ˈlɛzboʊs/; Greek:ΛέσβοςLesvos, pronounced[ˈle̞zvo̞s]), sometimes referred to as Mytilini after its capital, is a Greekisland located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. It has an area of 1,632 square kilometres (630sqmi) with 320 kilometres (199 miles) of coastline, making it the third largest Greek island. It is separated from Turkey by the narrow Mytilini Strait and in late Palaeolithic/Mesolithic times was joined to the Anatolian mainland before the end of the last Ice Age.

Some Lesbos residents refuse to let migrants dock in the island
Greek islanders prevented a group of migrants from reaching shore on Sunday after refusing to allow them to disembark from a dinghy that had sailed over from Turkey.
When the migrants reached Thermi on the island of Lesbos, residents heckled them with shouts of "stay in your country" and "the border is closed".

Over 2,500 years ago, one of ancient Greece’s most celebrated popstars and erotic poets enraptured listeners. The singer-songwriter offered a uniquely intimate perspective on love, passion, and longing, and was the first on record to combine the words “bitter” and “sweet,” to describe the ups and downs of romance. So, who was this revered figure? Diane J. Rayor uncovers the writings of Sappho.

Discover the works of poet and songwriter Sappho, and find out why only fragments of her poetry still survive.
--
Over 2,500 years ago, one of ancient Greece’s most celebrated popstars and erotic poets enraptured listeners. The singer-songwriter offered a uniquely intimate perspective on love, passion, and longing, and was the first on record to combine the words “bitter” and “sweet,” to describe the ups and downs of romance. So, who was this revered figure? Diane J. Rayor uncovers the writings of Sappho.

It is the seat of the Municipality of Mytilini and the North Aegean region, an administrative, commercial and spiritual center with a population of 27,545 inhabitants. Together we will discover the most beautiful #sights and #beaches
Mytilini is a relatively sparsely populated #city represented by low, mainly old #buildings, among which many preserved #neoclassical (mansions) and some Western #European #architectural buildings, of which I.N. Agios Therapondas, the work of Argyrios #Adalis, Renaissance style with its #magnificent #baroque dome dominating the #port of the city, the #bell tower of the #metropolis which is in the #neogothic style, which is also the only one in #Greece of this rhythm, the beautiful neo-baroque 4-storey building in #Sapphous Square on the waterfront and several mansions throughout the #territory of the city, of which those in the #Sourada area in the south-eastern part of the city on the way to the #airport stand out, which were built by Greeks at the end of the 19th century. and beginning of the 20th century. who lived abroad. And so these buildings carry many Western European architectural elements, such as #baroque, neo-gothic, belle-époque, renaissance, neoclassical and many times mixed together they complete a beautiful, strange architectural #image for the city but also for the island. A typical architectural masterpiece of the area is the well-known "Mytilene Tower" belle-époque style, which until recently functioned as a luxury #guesthouse. There is also a holy temple on the island of Lesvos, which honors Saint #Symeon the new stylist of Lesbius. The church is called Agios Simeon Mytilini and is located near the old #market. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, many families of Greek Asia Minor settled in the settlement of Epano Skala. There is also the historical #Monument of Mother Asia Minor.
In the 7th century BC Mytilini competed with #Mithymna of Lesvos in the north for the leadership of Lesvos, in which the entire eastern aristocracy of the island was concentrated. Mytilene was the birthplace of great personalities such as the poets #Sappho and #Alcaeus of Mytilene and the mighty #Pindar, one of the Seven Sages. The city existed from the end of the 6th century BC. until the middle of the 4th century BC. own coins from #electro. Emperor John V #Paleologos gave Lesvos as a dowry to the #Genoese noble Francesco I Gattiluzio when he married his sister Maria Palaiologina of Lesvos. The #Republic of Genoa renovated the "castle of Lesbos" (1373), Lesbos remained in #Genoa until the year it was conquered by the #Ottoman #Sultan Mohammed II the Conqueror (1462). It remained under the rule of the Ottomans until the 20th century, when the First #Balkan #War broke out (1912) it entered the Kingdom of Greece.
Mytilini is connected by ferry to the nearby islands of #Lemnos, #Chios, and the ports of #Ayvalik and magazines of Dikili in Turkey. The city is connected to the main mainland cities of the country (#Piraeus, #Athens and #Thessaloniki). The ship #Aiolos #Kenteris (which was named after Kostas Kenteris) connected the city with six-hour routes to Athens and Thessaloniki. The main port that connects the city to mainland Greece is that of Piraeus.
The city produces #ouzo. There are over 15 #commercial producers on the island.
The city exports #sardines which are collected from the bay of Kalloni, #olive oil, #fattyri, #tyry and #ξυλεία.
Lesbos, the third largest #island of Greece, is an enchanting #place that challenges you to #explore it. However, even if someone chooses to stay only in Mytilini, its capital, it is certain that he will leave full of beautiful images, satiated by special tastes and richer in memories. And that's because Mytilini is a lively city, which uniquely combines the #crystal sea with the green forests. #history, #culture and #traditions with modern #cosmopolitan life. The #museums and #tours with #evening #entertainment.
