Ancient Utrecht. Netherlands. Walking around the city in 2024
Ancient Utrecht is called the pulsating heart of Holland and the second "best place" in the country after Amsterdam (by the way, Utrecht is located only 45 kilometers from the capital of the country and you can get to it from Amsterdam by train in less than an hour). The city was built around the tower of the Dome Cathedral, which is visible from everywhere.
Utrecht is home to the tallest church in the Netherlands, as well as one of the oldest universities in Europe and the Schroeder House. The latter, built by order of a wealthy lady at the beginning of the XX century and at the same time similar to a modern cottage, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In addition to the sights, Utrecht is famous for its picturesque canals with hospitable cellars on the pier, where cafes and...

Utrecht’s Vredenburg is the busiest cycle path in all of the Netherlands
In Utrecht you'll see the most mesmerizing site: Vredenburg carries 33,000 cyclists on an average day! 60% of trips into the city are by bike. Private cars are banned from the road, all you will see is mega helpings of people on bikes, plus pedestrians, many bus lines and the very occasional taxi (taxis aren't very popular in Utrecht.)
On the plane ride home while going thru nearly 2,000 shots I took in Amsterdam and Utrecht, I realized so much of this good footage will not figure in the final product of my mega doc from Utrecht. So I thought best to put up a fun montage using some of the best shots. After all, I tweeted just one 30 second shot of footage overhead and that was watched nearly 400K times. So I figure there are probably many thousands that would love to just sit back and watch the bicycles flow by, sometimes their operators seemingly floating in air. If you go I warn you: one night I just sat for a half an hour sans camera taking it all in.

TOP 10 Things to do in Utrecht, Netherlands 2023!
Utrecht, Netherlands is an amazing place to visit in Netherlands. If you want to know top 10 what to do in Utrecht or you need a travel guide, please keep watching.
5. Visit Museum Speelklok
One of the more unusual of Utrecht's most popular tourist attractions is Museum Speelklok - or Musical Clock Museum in English - dedicated to music boxes, barrel organs, and other devices and instruments capable of playing music without human involvement (other than switching them on or cranking their handles). The museum was established in 1956, and its displays - many of them hands-on and interactive - include mechanical musical instruments from the 18th century to the present day, as well as domestic instruments, from tiny music boxes to massive fair organs, most of which can still be played.
4. Enjoy a Train Ride at the Railway Museum
Located in the old Maliebaan train station, Utrecht's Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum) is the country's national railway museum and is a must-see for train buffs. Founded in 1927, highlights of this large, well-stocked tourist attraction include a cross-section of the country's transit history, particularly its railroads and tram systems, with plenty of models and old vehicles to enjoy along the way.
Exhibits deal with the early years of railways, including its heyday of the 1900s, and an operational workshop.
3. The Kaiser's House
The picturesque little town of Doorn is the last home of Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II, Huis Doorn (known in English as Doorn Manor). Forced into exile after defeat in WWI, the Kaiser purchased Huis Doorn in 1920 and lived there until he died in 1941 at age 82 (he's buried in a mausoleum on the grounds). Originally a medieval castle, the house was rebuilt in the Classical style in the 18th century, with only minor alterations since.
Set in a large and beautiful park, the house opened to the public as a museum in 1956 and has been preserved exactly as it was in the Kaiser's day, right down to the original furniture and furnishings, the Kaiser's possessions (including a collection of snuff-boxes belonging to Frederick the Great), uniforms, photos, and paintings.
2. Rietveld Schröder House
Considered so important a piece of architecture that UNESCO has deemed it a World Heritage Site, the stunning Rietveld Schröder House (Rietveld Schröderhuis) is a must-see for design buffs. Designed and constructed in the early 1920s by leading Dutch architect (and Utrecht resident) Gerrit Rietveld for a widower friend and her family, this attractive small home was decades ahead of its time in so many ways.
For example, the lower living area was created with retracting walls, a clever trick created by Rietveld - a leading member of the influential De Stijl design movement - that enabled family members to shut themselves off at night for privacy, yet served as a large communal space by day.
1. Utrecht University Botanic Gardens
A fun diversion for those with green thumbs - or those who simply enjoy lovely green spaces and gardens - involves paying a visit to the Utrecht University Botanic Gardens. Centered around the old abandoned Fort Hoofddijk, this delightful 22-acre site, while a relatively new creation (it was laid out in the late 20th century), can trace its roots back to the early days of the university in the 17th century.
All told there are six unique gardens to explore. Favorites include the Birders Den (no surprise, it's popular with bird-watchers), and the Bee Hotel with its diverse array of pollinating insects. The tropical greenhouses are also worth exploring.

Utrecht: Planning for People & Bikes, Not for Cars
Though already a very good city for bicycling, in recent years Utrecht has decided to go a step further and reduce the number of cars in the city's center. How? Eliminating roadways, reaching nearly 33K bike parking spots downtown, making transition to get to the train easier and safer for people bicycling in their new bike parking facility and hosts of other ways. See it all here. I guarantee you if you live in a city that doesn't have good bike planning or infrastructure this film will equally inspire and depress you!

Catharijnesingel before and after, Utrecht, Netherlands
Final result of the reconstruction of a medieval waterway in the Dutch city of Utrecht. This project started in 1998 and took more than twenty years to complete. No less than 1400 meters of water and banks was brought back in this manner like it was before 1969. Now the water is mainly used for recreation. Parks, eco and public space are an important part of the improvements.
The video of the motorway was taken in 2010 shortly before it was closed down permanently. The boat video was made in September 2020 at the opening of the new waterway. In split screen the trips by car and by boat are synced and merged into one to illustrate the enormous effort.

Utrecht Pedestrian Zone (Netherlands) [97]
The Utrecht pedestrian zone is a large area of car free streets in the historic city center. First in 1965 and from November 1968 on a larger scale, the narrow streets were closed to car traffic on the busiest shopping days. This experiment made the streets car free on Wednesdays and Saturdays which were -and still are- important market days. There was a lot of opposition from shop owners but the city went through with the plans for a permanent car ban. From 1971 the streets were permanently car free and they were redesigned. Side walks were removed and the streets were transformed to streets for pedestrians only. All opposition has since vanished. The area has been car free for 40 years now. The area is livable and a commercial success. It is one of the most attractive inner city shoppi...

Why can't you cycle here in Utrecht?
[Ep. 917] What's the reason for a cycling ban on this road in Utrecht? The city planned a so-called "Noord-Zuid Doorbraak" (North-South cut through) in the 1960s. Demolition of buildings in the route had started, but the road was never finished. Most of the gaps were filled with new buildings, but the plan left some unexpected traces in the city. Such as this cycling ban! More information in the blog post: https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/?p=23158

Finally finished; a cycle route in Utrecht's station area
[Ep. 903] It had been a building site since 2009, but this summer Smakkelaarsveld was finally finished as a cycle street (or rather a cycle path where delivery vehicles are permitted). The rest of the area will be developed in the coming years, but at least you can cycle here again decently. More information in the blog post: https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/?p=22068

It is one of the most attractive inner city shopping areas of the country. Best reached by public transport and bicycle. Deliveries to shops take place in the early hours of the day.
When private car ownership increased dramatically from the 1950s in the Netherlands, it was soon clear that the historic city centers could not handle that much traffic. Streets could not be widened without demolishing many historic buildings. It took about 20 years before the public and the cities knew that it could not go on like this. From the early 1970s many cities in the Netherlands created car free zones in the city centers. From that same time the use of the bicycle was on the increase again too.

Treaty of Utrecht
The Treaty of Utrecht, which established the Peace of Utrecht, is a series of individual peace treaties, rather than a single document, signed by the belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Dutch city of Utrecht in March and April 1713. The treaties between several European states, including Spain, Great Britain, France, Portugal, Savoy and the Dutch Republic, helped end the war.
The treaties were concluded between the representatives of Louis XIV of France and of his grandson Philip V of Spain on one hand, and representatives of Anne of Great Britain, Victor Amadeus I of Sardinia, John V of Portugal and the United Provinces of the Netherlands on the other. They marked the end of French ambitions of hegemony in Europe expressed in the wars of Louis XIV and preserved the E...

SUMMARY
=======
The Peace of Utrecht is a series of peace treaties signed by the belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Dutch city of Utrecht between April 1713 and February 1715.
Before Charles II of Spain died childless in 1700, he had named his grandnephew Philip as his successor. However, Philip was grandson of Louis XIV of France and also in line for the French throne, and the other major powers in Europe were not willing to tolerate the potential union of two such powerful states. Essentially, the treaties allowed Philip to take the Spanish throne in return for permanently renouncing his claim to the French throne, along with other necessary guarantees that would ensure that France and Spain should not merge, thus preserving the balance of power in Europe.
The treaties between several European states, including Spain, Great Britain, France, Portugal, Savoy and the Dutch Republic, helped end the war. The treaties were concluded between the representatives of Louis XIV of France and of his grandson Philip on one hand, and representatives of Anne of Great Britain, Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia, John V of Portugal and the United Provinces of the Netherlands on the other. They marked the end of French ambitions of hegemony in Europe expressed in the wars of Louis XIV, and preserved the European system based on the balance of power. British historian G. M. Trevelyan argues:
That Treaty, which ushered in the stable and characteristic period of Eighteenth-Century civilization, marked the end of danger to Europe from the old French monarchy, and it marked a change of no less significance to the world at large, — the maritime, commercial and financial supremacy of Great Britain.
