The Vietnam War Explained In 25 Minutes | Vietnam War Documentary
The Vietnam War began in good faith, by good people with good intentions. But a combination of American overconfidence, Cold War tensions and imperialist tendencies the Americans had previously fought so hard against, made the war in Vietnam one of America’s darkest pages in its short but dense history. By the end of the war, more than 58,000 Americans would die, as too would 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers. Over 1 million North Vietnamese soldiers and Viet Cong guerillas would also perish as well as over 2 million civilians’ from both the north and the south, and thousands more from Laos and Cambodia.

The Vietnam War is a highly controversial topic at the best of times. But during their many debates on the subject, Western historians rarely pause to consider how the conflict was seen through the eyes of the Vietnamese people, either North or South. This video seeks to explore that little-known perspective, analysing the thoughts and motives behind perhaps the strangest, yet most persistent communist governments in Asia.

BIGGEST American War Crime Cover-Up Of The Vietnam War (Warning* Mature Audiences Only)
What happens when a group of men are let loose in the wilderness with no oversight and a simple instruction: kill anything that moves? Tiger Force is the answer. An elite recon group of the Vietnam War whose war crimes were covered up by the US government for decades.
In this video, we look at the atrocities committed by the men of Tiger Force as they descended into barbarity in the jungle of Vietnam, and how the US government tried to hide it from the world.
Origins of Tiger Force
Tiger Force was a long-range reconnaissance patrol unit of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. It was formed in November 1965 by Major David Hackworth to, quote, “out-guerrilla the guerrillas.” He put it more frankly to another reporter. “I want 40 swinging dicks,” Hackworth had said...

The Vietnam War brought everything into question. The rationalization of destroying villages in order to save them. America’s morality in the face of My Lai. The meaning of free-fire zones, shooting anything that moved as soldiers placed a cheapness on the lives of civilians. The falsification of body counts to increase kill death ratios. The unimportance of battle as men charged up hills because their generals told them too and after losing one platoon or two platoons they marched away to leave the hill for the enemy. Pride allowed the most unimportant battles to be blown into extravaganzas because America couldn't lose, and she couldn't retreat and because it didn't matter how many lives were lost to prove that point.

The emergence of Ho Chi Minh, nationalism into communism. The effect of the domino theory, JFK's assassination, and the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The US was drawn into bloody conflict.
Please note: During the first 5 - 6 minutes, Vietnam’s early history is briefly outlined. Professor Kiernan speaks about “the Portuguese and the Philippines.” To clarify, the Philippines were colonized by the Spanish, not the Portuguese. I’d like to thank a commentator—you know who you are—for pointing this out.

The Vietnam War - Part 1: Vietnam and the War | History Documentary
Watch 'The Vietnam War - Part 2' here: https://youtu.be/W5-iR_5L1LQ
The US's fear of communism caused American troops to go into Vietnam under President Kennedy in 1961. A war fought nightly on TV, it engendered a huge anti-war movement. By 1973, Nixon had resigned and the US was forced to withdraw in 1975.
In this episode: Vietnam's early history, its people, dynastic struggles, and invasions. The French, the Japanese in WWII, and the rise of communism in 1941. The emergence of Ho Chi Minh, nationalism into communism. The effect of the domino theory, JFK's assassination, and the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The US was drawn into bloody conflict.

The so called "Tunnel Rats" had undoubtedly one of the most dangerous Job during the Vietnam War
The so-called "Tunnel Rats" had one of the most dangerous jobs during the Vietnam War: Exploring and destroying the secret tunnels of the Viet Cong.
To counter the technical superiority of the United States, the Vietcong made use of a tunnel system, which allowed them to appear and disappear almost anywhere on the battlefield.
While the upper tunnels served as communication routes, the lower levels housed entire military hospitals, supply depots and training facilities. Since the tunnel system, which spread over hundreds of miles, was too complex to be destroyed with bombs, infantry soldiers had to descend into the unknown darkness themselves.
Before doing so, they took off their equipment and armed themselves only with a pistol. Booby traps or Viet Cong could be waiting behind every turn. On top of that soldiers risked suffocation, getting lost or being buried alive in a tunnel collapse. More than a third of the 600 tunnel rats died during their dangerous mission.
Nevertheless, the tunnel rats successfully disrupted the enemy in their safe retreat, gathered information and were able to blow up parts of the tunnel system.

In 1965, US troops officially landed in Vietnam, but American involvement in the ongoing conflict between the Communist North and the Anti-Communist South had started more than a decade earlier. So, why did the US-Vietnam War break out in the first place?

The Vietnam War was the longest war in American history up to that point, only surpassed by the War in
Afghanistan in 2021 lasting six months longer. The war dramatically hurt the reputation of the United States. It hurt…uh…the UNITED STATES quite a bit, too.
Today, the Vietnam War is seen as pointless. A big freaking mistake, based on lies, that led to millions of innocent people dying. It was a civil war that many say the United States had no business being a part of. Unlike the Korean War, the United Nations wanted nothing to do with it.

00:00 Vietnam and the War
Vietnam's early history, its people, dynastic struggles and invasions. The French, the Japanese in WWII and the rise of communism in 1941. The emergence of Ho Chi Minh, nationalism into communism. The effect of the domino theory, JFK's assassination and the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The US were drawn into conflict.
42:25 The TV War
In 1968 the Vietcong Tet Offensive turned the tide, the TV war began in full, anti-war demos, the Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy assassinations and My Lai massacre the war was now being shown on the nightly news for the first time. Over half a million US troops are deployed.
01:24:12 Fallout & Recovery
In 1972 Nixon orders the majority of US troops back. In 1974, after Watergate, he resigns. The US embassy is evacuated on April 30th 1975. In Vietnam the South face a backlash from the North and US veterans face dishonour and neglect back home. Today Vietnam is the world's second largest coffee producer, still ruled by a communist government and moving at the pace of China.

“I want 40 swinging dicks,” Hackworth had said, men who were free to use their own judgment, skill, and drive to conduct unrestrained warfare in the toughest areas of Vietnam. It usually numbered about 45 men at any one time, but people would rotate out every few months. For example, 120 different men served in the Tiger Force between July and December 1967.
Usually, Tiger Force would be dropped into an operational area and given effectively free reign to achieve their goal. Military command maintained minimal oversight of their activities - so long as they racked up a body-count, the brass were happy. Many soldiers embraced the freedom and lack of bureaucracy that Tiger Force provided, but the absence of accountability or oversight would lead the men of Tiger Force down a dark path.
Arriving in Song Ve
The events that would enshrine them in the history books began to unfold in summer 1967 when the Tiger Force was sent into the Song Ve Valley.
The Song Ve Valley was an agricultural hotspot that was allegedly a hiding place for the Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA). TTiger Force was instructed to clear out remaining residents of the valley to a nearby refugee camp and then sweep the area for VC soldiers and food caches. The valley was declared a ‘free-fire’ area - shoot first, ask questions later. Civilian casualties were still unacceptable in theory, but enforcing that condition was a whole other matter.

Vietnam War
The Vietnam War (also known by other names) was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955[A 1] to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was a major conflict of the Cold War. While the war was officially fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the north was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist states, while the south was supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies, making the war a proxy war between the United States and the Soviet Union. It lasted almost 20 years, with direct U.S. military involvement ending in 1973. The conflict also spilled over into neighboring states, exacerbating the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries official...

The Vietnam War would see the realisation of the Vietnamese dream of a single unified, independent country taking its place in the world free of outside oppression and rule. It is the type of story that has been told throughout history and had it occurred at any other point in history then it would have likely been largely forgotten outside of the small South East Asian country as so many wars of independence are. But because of events elsewhere in the world, the battlefields of Vietnam b...

The Vietnam War (Vietnamese: Chiến tranh Việt Nam), also known as the Second Indochina War,[63] and in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against America (Vietnamese: Kháng chiến chống Mỹ) or simply the American War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955[A 1] to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.[10] It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The Big Picture is an American documentary television program which aired on ABC-TV from 1951 to 1964. The series consisted of documentary films produced by the United States Army Signal Corps Army Pictorial Service, showing weaponry, battles, and biographies of famous soldiers.
After The Big Picture’s run on ABC ended, it aired in syndication for several more years on some local television stations well into the early 1970s.
Production
The half-hour weekly program featured famous or before-they-were-famous actors and actresses in quality productions, filmed on the Astoria stages, which is now Kaufman Astoria Studios which is a historic movie studio located in the Astoria section of the New York City borough of Queens. The host and narrator was Army Master Sergeant Stuart Queen (1919–1981)—a World War II veteran and Korean War combat broadcaster. Though Master Sgt. Queen is referred to as both a host and narrator, he essentially introduced the profiles that were narrated by such luminaries as Alexander Scourby, Walter Cronkite, Raymond Massey, and Ronald Reagan. In the 1950s, the series was shot on 35mm black-and-white negative, but by the end of the 1960s, it was using 16mm color negative.
From the official government catalog: "THE BIG PICTURE is the official television report by the U.S. Army to its members and to the American people. Subject matter for episodes ranges from historic moments in the Army's proud history to up-to-the-moment coverage of current actions and accomplishments."
On DVD
As an official work of the United States government, The Big Picture was never eligible for copyright and has always been in the public domain, thus allowing it to be distributed far and wide without restriction. The National Archives and Records Administration has made individual episodes of The Big Picture available via Amazon and the Internet Archive, where they can be downloaded for free. Episode DVDs can also be copied for free by visitors to NARA's College Park, Maryland, facility. Many complete episodes and clips have been posted on YouTube.

The conflict also spilled over into neighboring states, exacerbating the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries officially becoming communist states by 1976.
After the fall of French Indochina with the 1954 Geneva Conference on 21 July, the country gained independence from France but was divided into two parts: the Viet Minh took control of North Vietnam, while the U.S. assumed financial and military support for South Vietnam.[56][A 8] The Viet Cong (VC), a South Vietnamese common front under the direction of the north, initiated a guerrilla war in the south. The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), also known as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), engaged in more conventional warfare with U.S. and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) forces. North Vietnam invaded Laos in 1958, establishing the Ho Chi Minh Trail to supply and reinforce the VC.[57]: 16 By 1963, the north had sent 40,000 soldiers to fight in the south.[57]: 16 U.S. involvement increased under President John F. Kennedy, from just under a thousand military advisors in 1959 to 23,000 by 1964.[58][29]: 131

But because of events elsewhere in the world, the battlefields of Vietnam became one of the most important in the world at that time for it was here that two ideological superpowers, the democratic west and the communist east, would throw their weight in. Not being able to fight one another directly because they would destroy themselves in a nuclear fire, they instead fought through the Vietnamese people. This is the story of the Vietnam War.

North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union, China,[14] and other communist allies; South Vietnam was supported by the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand and other anti-communist allies.[64][65] The war, considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some,[66] lasted 19 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973, and included the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, resulting in all three countries becoming communist in 1975.
The conflict emerged from the First Indochina War against the communist-led Viet Minh.[67][A 4] Most of the funding for the French war effort was provided by the U.S.[68] After the French quit Indochina in 1954, the US assumed financial and military support for the South Vietnamese state. The Việt Cộng, also known as Front national de libération du Sud-Viêt Nam or NLF (the National Liberation Front), a South Vietnamese common front under the direction of North Vietnam, initiated a guerrilla war in the south. North Vietnam had also entered Laos in the mid-1950s in support of insurgents, setting up the Ho Chi Minh trail to supply and reinforce the Việt Cộng and increased in 1960.[69] U.S. involvement escalated under President John F. Kennedy through the MAAG program from just under a thousand in 1959 to 16,000 in 1963.[70][71] By 1963, the North Vietnamese had sent 40,000 soldiers to fight in South Vietnam.[69] North Vietnam was heavily backed by the People's Republic of China, which in addition to supplying arms as the USSR did, also sent hundreds of thousands of PLA servicemen to North Vietnam to serve in support roles.
By 1964, there were 23,000 US advisors in South Vietnam during the Gulf of Tonkin incident, in which a U.S. destroyer was alleged to have clashed with North Vietnamese fast attack craft. In response, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave President Lyndon B. Johnson broad authorization to increase U.S. military presence, deploying ground combat units for the first time and increasing troop levels to 184,000.[70] Past this point, the People's Army of Vietnam (known also as the NVA) engaged in more conventional warfare with US and South Vietnamese forces. Every year onward there was significant build-up of US forces despite little progress, with Robert McNamara one of the principal architects of the war, expressing doubts of victory by the end of 1966.[72] U.S. and South Vietnam forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery, and airstrikes. The U.S. also conducted a large-scale strategic bombing campaign against North Vietnam and Laos.
The Tet Offensive of 1968 showed the lack of progress with these doctrines as the NLF and PAVN mounted large-scale urban offensives throughout 1968, turning US domestic support against the war. The Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) expanded following a period of neglect after Tet, modeled on US doctrine. The NLF sustained heavy losses during the Tet Offensive, losing over half its strength in a matter of months,[73] which combined with subsequent U.S.-ARVN operations in the rest of 1968, nearly wiped out the southern insurgency. The CIA's Phoenix Program further degraded the NLF's membership and capabilities. By the end of the year, the NLF insurgents held almost no territory in South Vietnam, and their recruitment dropped by over 80% in 1969, signifying a drastic reduction in guerrilla operations and necessitating increased use of NVA regulars from the north.[74] In 1969, North Vietnam declared a Provisional Revolutionary Government in South Vietnam in an attempt to give the reduced NLF a more international stature, but the southern guerrillas from then on were sidelined as PAVN forces begun more conventional Combined arms warfare. Operations crossed national borders: Laos was invaded by North Vietnam early on while Cambodia was used by North Vietnam as a supply route starting in 1967; the route through Cambodia began to be bombed by the U.S. in 1969, while the Laos route had been heavily bombed since 1964.
