Built for Leighton by the architect and designer George Aitchison, it is a Grade II* listed building. It is noted for its elaborate Orientalist and aesthetic interiors. It is open to the public daily except Tuesdays, and is a companion museum to 18 Stafford Terrace, another Victorian artist's home in Kensington.
The first part of the house (2 Holland Park Road, later renumbered as 12) was designed in 1864 by the architect George Aitchison, although Leighton was not granted a lease on the land until April 1866. Building commenced shortly afterwards, and the house, which cost £4500 equivalent to £395,165in 2016, was ready for occupation by the end of the year. The building is of red Suffolk bricks with Caen Stone dressings in a restrained classical style.
The architect extended the building over 30 years; the first phase was only three windows wide. The main room was the first floor studio, facing north, originally 45 by 25 feet, with a large central window to provide plenty of light for painting. There was also a gallery at the east end, and a separate staircase for use by models. The house was extended to the east in 1869–70. Additionally, a major extension was made in 1877–79: the two-storey "Arab Hall," built to house Leighton's collection of tiles collected during visits to the Middle East.
A historic house museum is a house that has been transformed into a museum. Historic furnishings may be displayed in a way that reflects their original placement and usage in a home. Historic house museums are held to a variety of standards, including those of the International Council of Museums.
The International Council of Museums defines a museum as: "A museum as a non profit-making, permanent institution in the service of society and of its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits, for purpose of study, education and enjoyment, the tangible and intangible evidence of people and their environment." Houses are transformed into museums for a number of different reasons. For example, the homes of famous writers are frequently turned into writer's home museums to support literary tourism.
About
Also known as a ‘memory museum’, which is a term used to suggest that historic house museum contains a collection of the traces of memory of the people who once lived there. It is often made up of the inhabitants’ belongings and objects – this approach is mostly concerned with authenticity. Some museums are organised around the person who lived there or the social role the house had. Other historic house museums may be partially or completely reconstructed in order to tell the story of a particular area, social-class or historical period. The ‘narrative’ of the people who lived there guides this approach, and dictates the manner in which it is completed. In each kind of museum visitors learn about the previous inhabitants through an explanation and exploration of Social History.

Leighton House is one of the most extraordinary Victorian buildings in the country, the vision of Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896), President of the Royal Academy, who lived there for 30 years. Behind its unassuming exterior lies a kaleidoscope of art forms, ideas and cultural references, expressed vividly across the extraordinary suite of interiors and Leighton’s art collections.
The house was designed by his great friend, the architect George Aitchison RA as a showcase for artistic taste and to entertain and impress the foremost artists, collectors and celebrities of the day.

"Lord Leighton was a significant British artist of the late nineteenth century and the first ever to receive a peerage. Leighton House served both as his home and studio and as a centre for the artistic community. The Jury was delighted with the way the recent restoration has recaptured the original style and atmosphere. It was this attention to authenticity which particularly appealed to us, reinstating all the remarkable interiors, from the gorgeous Arab Hall, with its fountain and collection of Islamic tiles which Leighton himself brought back from Damascus, his enormous working studio, with separate back stairs for models and dealers, to his own austere little bedroom."

Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity at Leighton House Museum (7 July - 29 October 2017)
Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity is the largest exhibition devoted to the celebrated Victorian artist held in London since 1913. The show explores Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s fascination with the representation of domestic life in antiquity and how this interest related to his own domestic circumstances expressed through the two remarkable studio-houses that he created in St John’s Wood together with his wife Laura and daughters.
The exhibition also showcases the influence of Alma-Tadema's work in early European cinema and in more recent films like Gladiator (2000)

An Icon Returns
Steeped in history, Matild Palace was built 120 years ago during the Belle Époque era and was developed under the patronage of Her Imperial and Royal Highness Maria Klotild of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to serve as the social hub of the city. Matild Palace was part of her vision to create two baroque palaces, acting as a gateway to those entering the ‘Pest’ side of the city from Elisabeth Bridge.
A True Epicurean Destination by Wolfgang Puck
Wolfgang Puck will oversee all dining operations at Matild Palace bringing a new era of gastronomy and entertainment to the city. His renowned restaurant Spago by Wolfgang Puck marks the debut of the Beverly Hills dining phenomenon in Hungary. The menu will offer traditional Hungarian cuisine with a modern twist through recipes inspired by the produce of the region.
The iconic chef will also oversee culinary offerings at The Duchess rooftop bar, a secret liquor library, as well as Matild Café and Cabaret, opening in September, which is a dramatic re-imagination of the most popular address for the high society of the Belle Époque era.
Spago and Matild Café & Cabaret will both offer year-round outdoor dining on the charming streets of Budapest, marking the first ‘gastro street’ in the city.
Signature Guestrooms and Palatial Suites
Matild Palace offers an exceptional choice of 111 elegantly appointed guestrooms and 19 suites, with many providing spectacular views of the city or the Danube River. The four guestroom categories each take inspiration from The Duchess’s exuberant lifestyle and early 20th century Budapest. Each bedroom is over four metres in height and celebrates Hungarian culture throughout with delicately handcrafted headboards, traditional fishbone parquet floors and lavish spa-style bathrooms inspired by the iconic thermal baths of Hungary. A thoughtful colour palette of teal, green, gold, and copper decorates the rooms, reflecting the hues of the iconic Budapest roofscape. The hotel offers many connecting family rooms for multi-generational city breaks.
For a truly unique stay, the Loft Guestrooms, located at the rooftop of the property, provide endless views either across the city or the Danube River through large, sloping windows. The eclectic mix of contemporary design with colourful vintage furnishings and art captures the eye of creatives and is a nod to The Duchess’s artisan friends who used to frequent the palace.
Crowning the palace with its fifth-floor location, The Crown Tower Suite is split across three floors and is the first suite in Hungary to come with a 48-metre-high dedicated tower boasting 360-degree views of the city. Regal elegance is epitomised in the Maria Klotid Royal Suite, designed as a modern interpretation of the Duchess’s private suite, featuring a spacious master bedroom, bathroom, living room and separate study, decorated with elegant chandeliers and handmade glass mosaics.
Wellness and Relaxation
Swan Spa at Matild Palace features a Hungarian-influenced wellness experience with traditional thermal therapy and Hammam rituals designed to awaken guests’ senses. Complete with a salt and steam room the spa will exclusively offer ESPA products for all spa treatments. For those looking to keep active, there is also a fully equipped state-of-the-art gym.

This 'virtual exploration' of Leighton House is presented by art history guide, Imogen Pasley-Tyler.

Opened to the public in March 2005, every part of the Palace of Arts is at the service of culture. It is the home of music classical-, jazz-, world music and opera, dance and contemporary fine art.
The top floor of the Palace offers an exceptional panorama of Budapest, the Danube bridges and the hills surrounding the city.
The impressive dimensions of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, situated in the heart of the building, evoke the atmosphere of a gothic cathedral. The auditorium is on four levels, and can accommodate 1700 people. On its podium, world famous musicians and orchestras are continually being presented to the music-loving public.
The auditorium of the Festival Theater holds 452 people. The theater is used primarily for dance and music performances.
Diversity and openness characterize the Palace of Arts. It is open everyday from morning to evening, and not only when there are concerts and performances.
Its elegant restaurant, with a cosy atmosphere and excellent service, offers its guests Hungarian and continental cuisine.
The Palace is an artwork of the Hungarian Art Nouveau and one of the most well-known sights of Budapest. The Gresham Palace was built in 1907 and renovated in 2004 for the transformation into a luxury hotel managed under the name, Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest.
