Unlike the original Lego Racers, the player has more "freedom", because the player can race or drive freely, and there are other characters that the player can talk to. Lego Racers 2 also has, like in the original, a car and characters designer. It has more bricks but fewer characters to make and edit. In Lego Racers 2, it can be chosen up to 11 opponents.
There are five large worlds, starting with the hometown, Sandy Bay. The player wins 4 races in Sandy Bay, then collects gold bricks to move on to Dino Island, Mars, Arctic, and finally Xalax. In Xalax, the player will face Rocket Racer, who when beaten, will hand over the title as the greatest racer in the galaxy.
Lego Racers is a product line (or theme) of the construction toy Lego. The range was first introduced in 1975 with a Formula 1 car model. However, the brand only really started to become a core theme in 2001, with the release of a series of mini racecars. Made from only a small number of large bricks, these toys were designed more as racing car toys than a construction toy, and included a launcher element (which doubled up as a storage container) that could be used to propel the vehicles.
Over time, the theme has developed, bringing it more in line with the style of other Lego products, whilst still encouraging a racing form of gameplay. The theme has also included licensed models of real-life high-speed cars, such as a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Ferrari FXX.
This product line was discontinued in 2012.

Set in the fictional "Legoland" universe, the single-player mode follows various minifigure characters competing in a racing competition created by a fictional racing champion called Rocket Racer. Players control a minifigure, allowing them to drive a variety of cars built out of Lego and race them against other minifigure characters. Items can be used by the player to hinder other racers' progress, and the player can create their own cars and characters with unlocked Lego bricks and use them to race. A local multiplayer mode also allows multiple players to race against each other.
Originally conceived by High Voltage founder Kerry Ganofsky, creative expertise from The Lego Group assisted High Voltage in the game's development after Lego Media agreed to begin production. It received a mix of high and low scoring reviews from critics, who were divided on the game's graphics, construction system, driving gameplay and other design aspects. A sequel to the game developed by ATD called Lego Racers 2 was released in 2001.
