The Act of Union 1840, passed July 23, 1840, by the British Parliament and proclaimed by the Crown on February 10, 1841, merged the two Colonies by abolishing the Parliaments of Upper and Lower Canada and replacing them with a single one with two houses, a Legislative Council as the upper chamber and the Legislative Assembly as the lower chamber. In the aftermath of the Rebellions of 1837–1838, unification of the two Canadas was driven by two factors. Firstly, Upper Canada was near bankruptcy due to a lack of stable tax revenues, and needed the resources of the more populous Lower Canada to fund its internal transportation improvements. And secondly, unification was an attempt to swamp the French vote by giving each of the former provinces the same number of parliamentary seats, despite the larger population of Lower Canada. Although Durham's report had called for both the Union of the Canadas and Responsible Government (i.e., an independent local legislature), only the first was implemented. The new government was to be led by an appointed Governor General accountable only to the British Crown and the King's Ministers. Responsible Government was not to be achieved until the second LaFontaine-Baldwin ministry in 1849.
The Legislative Council (LegCo) was the legislature of Kenya between 1907 and 1963.
History
The Legislative Council was established in 1907 in order to serve as a legislature for the East Africa Protectorate. Initially a wholly-appointed body, it met for the first time in August 1907. The first elections took place in 1920, in which eleven European members were elected. Appointed members remained in the majority.
By the next elections in 1924, an addition five seats for Indians and one for Arabs had been added, although the Indian population boycotted the elections in protest at not being given parity with Europeans. Only one Indian was elected in 1927, and the Indian seats were filled from 1931 onwards. The first African was appointed to the Council in 1944.
Prior to the 1952 elections the number of European constituencies was increased to 14 and the Indian seats to six. Elections under this system were held in 1956, but supplementary elections were held in 1957 to elect eight African members for the first time.
Under the Articles 66 to 79 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the main functions of the Legislative Council are to enact, amend or repeal laws; examine and approve budgets, taxation and public expenditure; and raise questions on the work of the government. In addition, the Legislative Council is also given the power to endorse the appointment and removal of the judges of the Court of Final Appeal and the Chief Judge of the High Court, as well as the power to impeach the Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
Article 68 of the Basic Law states the ultimate aim is the election of all the members of the Legislative Council by universal suffrage. Together with the similar article for Chief Executive, Article 68 has helped make universal suffrage of the Legislative Council and Chief Executive the most dominant issue of Hong Kong politics.
Canada (i/ˈkænədə/; French: [ka.na.da]) is a country in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98million square kilometres (3.85million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada's border with the United States is the world's longest land border. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains; about four-fifths of the country's population of 35 million people live near the southern border. The majority of Canada has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer.
The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the Atlantic coast, with the first establishment of a region called "Canada" occurring in 1537. As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North America until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotiajoined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada. In 1931, Canada achieved near total independence from the United Kingdom with the Statute of Westminster 1931, and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 removed the last remaining ties of legal dependence on the British parliament.
Provinces of the Anglican Church of Canada are headed by a Metropolitan, elected from among the province's diocesan bishops. This bishop then becomes Archbishop of his or her diocese and Metropolitan of the Province. The current Metropolitan of the Province of Canada is the Most Rev. Percy D. Coffin, Archbishop of Western Newfoundland.

Learn Canada Provinces And Capitals
There are 10 Canadian provinces, with three territories to the north. The provinces are, in alphabetical order: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The three territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. The difference between a province and a territory has to do with its governance. Basically, the territories have delegated powers under the authority of the Parliament of Canada; they are grouped together and ruled by the federal government. The provinces, on the other hand, exercise constitutional powers in their own right. This imbalance of power is gradually being rectified, with local decision-making powers being granted to ...

We are Canada
made up of 10 Provinces
and 3 territories
with capitals in all
We’re here to teach you all and then
some facts that go along with them
So sing along with me
now let's have a ball
I am Alberta
My capital is Edmonton
I am a Province of Canada
My time zone is in Mountain
My flower’s the wild rose
My tree’s the Lodgepole Pine
My birds the Great-horned Owl
and my scenery is fine
Hello I’m Quebec
In case you didn’t notice me
My capital is also Québec
with an Accent aigu: é
I am a French-speaking province
of this Canadian country
And I’m the largest province by area
in Canada you see
I am Saskatchewan
My capital is Regina
Royal Saskatchewan Museum
is a great see for all of ya
I became a province of
Canada in 1905
and my provincial bird
is a Sharp-tailed grouse that can fly
I’m British Columbia
Victoria’s my capital
Canada’s westmost province
touching the Pacific coast
I have lots of mountain ranges
Whistler Mountains my most famous
If you’re looking to ski or snowboard
I have lots of these places
Aye my Manitoba
my capital’s Winnipeg
I’m a province of Canada
I’m not pulling your leg
Pasqueflower’s my Provincial flower
GreatGrey Owl’s my Bird
I have Arctic Tundra in the North
And southern farmland to herd
Hey I’m Ontario
My capital is Toronto
The Hudson Bays to my North
And the US to my south you know
Half of Lake Ontario
sits in my Province you see
It’s one of the 5 great lakes
4 of them do border me
We are Canada
made up of 10 Provinces
and 3 territories
with capitals in all
We’re here to teach you all and then
some facts that go along with them
So sing along with me
now let's have a ball
Hi I’m New Brunswick
My capital is Fredericton
I boarder the U.S. state of Maine
My largest city is Saint John
My Bay of Fundy is most famous
for its extreme tides
and if you’re into whale watching
that’s where you’d want to reside
Hello I’m Nova Scotia
My capital’s Halifax
I’m one of Canada’s
Maritime provinces now how about that
I’m in the Atlantic ocean
I also have long coastlines
I’m home to the Puffin and Seals
Yeah my scenery is fine
I’m Prince Edward Island
My capital is Charlottetown
I’m a Canadian province
And where the Province House is found
I am known for my seafood
mostly lobsters and mussels
The Gulf of St.Lawrence
Is where you can view some sea vessels
I’m Newfoundland and Labrador
My capital’s St. John's
I’m the most easterly province
in which Canada’s really fond
Gros Morne National Park
is one of my attractions
dramatic cliffs and waterfalls
are some of my sites that are fun
I’m the Yukon Territory
My capital is Whitehorse
I’m located in Northwest Canada
for what it is worth
I’m home to Mt. Logan
Canada’s highest mountain
I’m also home to glaciers
and also if you like to fish Salmon
I’m the Northwest Territories
My capital’s Yellowknife
One of the 3 Territories
in the Canadian archive
One of my coolest attractions is
my Virginia Falls
Nahanni National Park Reserve

I’m the Nunavut Territory
my capital Iqaluit
And I’m known for my indigenous people
the Inuit
I form most of the Canadian Arctic
Archipelago
And the least populated Canadian Territory

Why didn't Hong Kong police stop ransacking of Legislative Council? | DW News
In Hong Kong, a tense calm has descended and a clean-up operation is underway to remove debris left over from the violence that engulfed parts of the city. It came after protesters stormed and ransacked the Legislative Council building on the anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to Chinese rule. Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who protested against planned legislation that would allow extraditions to China. Beijing has called the protest an 'undisguised challenge' to Chinese rule. Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam has criticized the violence and called for society to return to normal as soon as possible.

Hongkongers are set to vote for members of the next Legislative Council on December 19, 2021. It's the first Legco polls since Beijing revamped the city's electoral system earlier in the year. The government says the overhaul will ensure that only patriots can run Hong Kong. But critics say it all but silenced the opposition from the pro-democracy camp, which is boycotting the polls.

HONG KONG: CHRIS PATTEN SPEAKS AT LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL FOR LAST TIME
(19 Jun 1997) English/Nat
Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten says his biggest regret is not convincing Beijing that it could trust Hong Kong's people.
Patten spoke Thursday at his last Question Time in the Territory's Legislative Council before the handover to China.
Arriving for the last time at the LegCo building with his wife Lavender, Patten was greeted by a small group of well-wishers anxious to witness a little bit of history.
After the handover, this elected legislature will no longer sit.
It was established under electoral reforms introduced by Patten despite ardent protests from Beijing.
From July 1, a provisional legislature appointed by China will occupy these benches.

Hong Kong’s first Legislative Council election since Beijing overhauled the city’s electoral system is scheduled on December 19, 2021. A total of 153 candidates will run in directly elected geographical constituencies, trade-based indirectly elected functional constituencies, and the election committee. In the absence of candidates from the opposition camp for the first time in the city’s history, most of the 10 geographical contests in the poll involve two or three pro-Beijing candidates competing for two seats alongside a solitary non-establishment independent or centrist hopeful. The Post's Nadia Lam visited Sha Tin, Wong Tai Sin, Choi Hung and Tung Chung to ask local residents about their electoral choice...

Hongkongers will head to the polls on December 19, 2021, to cast ballots in the first Legislative Council election since the central government in mainland China revamped the city’s electoral system earlier in the year. The SCMP recently spoke with two of the 153 candidates running for Legco seats, including veteran pro-establishment lawmaker Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee and Adrian Lau Cheuk-yu. Lau is one of only three hopefuls who refer to themselves as “pro-democracy” in their manifestos and standing on election platforms calling for universal suffrage.

Democratic Party leader Martin Lee - who will lose his seat after the handover - asked the first question.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What is the single most important thing you would have liked to have done for Hong Kong which you could not do."
SUPER CAPTION: Martin Lee, Chairman Democratic Party
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What I would have liked to have been able to do was to convince the leaders in Peking that there was nothing to worry about in Hong Kong, that they could trust Hong Kong, that they could be relaxed about Hong Kong."
SUPER CAPTION: Chris Patten, outgoing Hong Kong Governor
With his wife watching from the balcony, Patten was questioned about accusations that the P-L-A are enjoying special privileges ahead of the handover - accusations the governor categorically denied.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There are no instructions to do other than apply the existing customs and immigration regulations impartially and fairly to everyone, whether they're in the P-L-A or whether in the girl guides."
SUPER CAPTION: Chris Patten, outgoing Hong Kong Governor
At the end of the session, one hypothetical but lighthearted question from an inquisitive member.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What would you have done if you had been a Prime Minister in the last five years?"
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Leong Che-hung, LegCo member
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think as things have turned out, I'd have appointed myself governor of Hong Kong."
SUPER CAPTION: Chris Patten, outgoing Hong Kong Governor
Patten had a chance to say personal good-byes to LegCo members at a champagne reception after the Question Time.
And as a parting gift, he was given a silver tankard.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's now time for Hong Kong people to run Hong Kong, and I am sure you'll make an extremely good job of it. Thank you very much indeed."
SUPER CAPTION: Chris Patten, outgoing Hong Kong Governor
As the outgoing governor was saying his farewells, Hong Kong's future leader Tung Chee-hwa was welcoming the new at the Territory's airport.
Tung was on hand to unveil a Boeing 747 specially painted to commemorate the handover of Hong Kong to China.

The Post's Nadia Lam visited Sha Tin, Wong Tai Sin, Choi Hung and Tung Chung to ask local residents about their electoral choices and willingness to vote.

We are Canada
made up of 10 Provinces
and 3 territories
with capitals in all
We’re here to teach you all and then
some facts that go along with them
So sing along with me
now let's have a ball
I am Alberta
My capital is Edmonton
I am a Province of Canada

Hundreds of protesters in Hong Kong swarmed into the legislature's main building Monday night, tearing down portraits of legislative leaders and spray-painting pro-democracy slogans on the walls of the main chamber. CBS News Asia correspondent Ramy Inocencio takes us inside.

The Post's Nadia Lam visited Sha Tin, Wong Tai Sin, Choi Hung and Tung Chung to ask local residents about their electoral choices and willingness to vote.
