The Romanlegionary (Latin: legionarius, pl. legionarii) was a professional heavy infantryman of the Roman army after the Marian reforms. Legionaries had to be Roman citizens under the age of 45. They enlisted in a legion for twenty-five years of service, a change from the early practice of enlisting only for a campaign. The last five years were on veteran lighter duties.
Immunes
Regular trained legionaries were known as milites and were the equivalent in rank of the modern private. Included in the ranks, aside from the milites, were the immunes, specialist soldiers with secondary roles such as engineer, artilleryman, drill and weapons instructor, carpenter and medic. These men were still fully trained legionaries, however, and would fight in the ranks if called upon. They were excused from some of the more arduous tasks such as drill and fatigues and received better pay than their comrades in arms.

Since its earliest history, the term ‘Legion’ has been heavily associated with the Roman military, whether it denoted entire armies in the formation years of the Roman Republic, or the more elite forces we have come to associate with the period of the Roman Empire.
Serving as trailblazers in the early years of the Empire, Roman Legions spearheaded imperial expansion allowing Rome to dominate much of Europe and beyond in the classical era.

A centurion was a professional officer of the Roman army after the Marian reforms of 107 BC. Most centurions commanded groups of centuries of around 80 men but senior centurions commanded cohorts or took senior staff roles in their legion. Centurions were also found in the Roman navy. Their symbol of office was the vine staff, with which they disciplined even Roman citizens protected from other forms of beating by the Porcian Laws.
In the Roman infantry, centurions initially commanded a centuria or "century".
Centurions seemed to receive a much higher rate of pay than the average legionary, twice as much or more. Veteran legionaries often worked as tenants of their former centurions.
The vine-stick mentioned by Tacitus was called a vitis; it was a symbol of the centurion's authority and the implement with which he would mete out punishment.
Evidence suggests that centurions had important social status and held powerful positions in society. They seem to have received their status according to their rank. On retirement they could be eligible for employment as Lictors.
A Roman legion was the largest unit of the Roman army, consisting of centuries as the basic units.
For most of the Roman Imperial period, the legions formed the Roman army's elite heavy infantry, recruited exclusively from Roman citizens, while the remainder of the army consisted of auxiliaries, who provided additional infantry and the vast majority of the Roman army's cavalry.
A legion consisted of several cohorts of heavy infantry known as legionaries. It was almost always accompanied by one or more attached units of auxiliaries, who were not Roman citizens and provided cavalry, ranged troops and skirmishers to complement the legion's heavy infantry.
From the time of Gaius Marius onwards, legionaries received 225 denarii a year; this basic rate remained unchanged until Domitian, who increased it to 300 denarii. The soldiers did not receive all the money in cash, as the state deducted a clothing and food tax from their pay. To this wage, a legionary on active campaign would hope to add the booty of war. Slaves could also be claimed from the prisoners of war and divided amongst the legion for later sale, which would bring in a sizeable supplement to their regular pay.
All legionary soldiers would also receive a praemia on the completion of their term of service: a sizeable sum of money and/or a plot of good farmland; farmland given to veterans often helped in establishing control of the frontier regions and over rebellious provinces.

Honey I know we’ve seen bad weather But what’ve we lost that’s not already gone? I’m a legionnaire of forces Climb the walls and burn it down Fall like dominos I’m a legionnaire of forces now (Keep it down now) So meet me in the wilderness I’m always on your side To be with you Honey I know we’ve seen bad weather But what do you know? It’s already gone We’ll watch that empire fall to pieces A paper tiger ringleader Fall like dominos I’m a legionnaire of forces now (Keep it down now) So meet me in the wilderness You and I were made for something more (Keep it down now) So cast a light and clear me out I’m always on your side
