interview - Lee Myung-bak, President of South Korea
The President of South Korea has said his people and his government are prepared for any contingency on the Korean peninsular.
His comments came after neighbouring North Korea test-launched several missiles, threatened the South with war, and even detonated a second nuclear device.
President Lee Myung-bak came to Europe for the G8 summit; to celebrate 20 years of close ties with Poland and to put the finishing touches to a free-trade agreement between South Korea and the EU.
He also had a 20 minute audience with the Pope.
And in his first major european TV interview since becoming president, the man they call "The Bulldozer" also told euronews why he is giving away his personal fortune - worth 16 million euros - to help the poor.

Back behind bars, Lee Myung-bak is the 4th jailed ex-South Korean leader
You can watch this video at https://koreanow.com
What is it about ex-South Korean presidents and prison? Four have been jailed, including Lee Myung-bak, who was put back behind bars this week. The first two, Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, were both jailed and pardoned within the 1990s. Then came Park Geun-hye, who was expelled from office in 2017 and subsequently incarcerated over a power abuse scandal that still reverberates today. Is this all a coincidence or is there a deeper problem that needs to be resolved?

Former president Lee Myung-bak leaves home for questioning by prosecutors
'운명의 날' 앞둔 이명박 자택서 조사대비…'폭풍전야'
And we go to our Lee Jeong-yeon who joins us live from outside Lee Myung-bak's home in southern Seoul.
Jeong-yeon, how are things looking over there now he's left?
Hi Mark, the former president left his home at around 9:15 AM in a black car with heavily tinted windows,... making the relatively short trip to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.
The security presence has thinned out since his departure, but it seems a handful will remain on duty until they all come back when Lee returns home,... presumably tomorrow morning.
The scene might be familiar to those who followed former President Park Geun-hye leaving her home prior to her questioning by prosecutors last year,... but it's actually been a lot quieter here.
Earlier, a few people came...

South Korea's 17th President Lee Myung-bak was put behind bars again on Monday afternoon.

The 78-year-old is incarcerated again after 251 days,...as he had been out of jail since February after he appealed a court's decision to deny him bail.
Lee was sent to Seoul Dongbu Detention Center at around 2 PM.
He had served time there for about a year after his arrest in 2018.
He is expected to be detained in a roughly 13-square-meter single cell on the top floor...fitted with a television, a mattress, a bathroom as well as a sink and a table.
A personal prison officer will be assigned to help him with his prison life out of deference to his former presidential status.
However, he will undergo physical examinations and a mug shot, and be deprived of his belongings just like other prisoners.
According to procedure, Lee would be moved to a prison in three to four weeks,... but there's a possibility that he serves his remaining 16 years in the detention center instead, given his age and underlying health conditions.
Lee was convicted of embezzling around 30 million U.S. dollars through an auto parts company... of which he effectively owned and accepting around 6 million dollars of bribes from Samsung Electronics.
Without a special pardon, he will be released in 2036, at the age of 94.

Meanwhile, President Lee Myung-bak gave his final address as South Korean leader on Tuesday, reflecting on his five-year term in the nation's top office.
While expressing regret on various issues surrounding him he said he would leave judgments on his administration to history.
Our Eoh Jin-joo has more on President Lee's farewell speech. President Lee Myung-bak said that throughout his five-year term, he tried to show North Korea that it must act on principle and build trust before it could become a true member of the international community and inter-Korean relations could improve.
During his last address to the nation on Tuesday, the president also stressed that the future of South Korea depends on reunification of the two Koreas.
"Although the North Korean regime is refusing to change, its people are changing. Nobody can stop this change from coming. (dissolve) I firmly believe the day we will see reunification is not far away."
President Lee once again warned Pyongyang that nuclear weapons and missiles will not protect it, but will only further isolate it from the global community, eventually leading to a dead-end.
Looking back on his past five years in the nation's top office, the president also talked about his focus on global leadership and his desire to find ways for the entire world to prosper together.
"Korea successfully hosting the G-20 Summit and the Nuclear Security Summit and becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (dissolve) were possible because the country's global diplomacy led to global leadership."
President Lee also apologized for causing the nation great concern by failing to prevent bribery scandals involving his close aides, including members of his family, and offered his sincere gratitude to those people who supported and assisted him during his time in office.
"I wish the best to all of the people who gave me the opportunity and strength. I hope you will all be happy and take good care. Thank you."

STORYLINE:
South Korea's new President, Lee Myung-bak began his first official tour of China on Tuesday with a visit to Beijing to meet with President Hu Jintao.
Lee was greeted by Hu with an inspection of China's military.
The two leaders then moved inside for talks in the Great Hall of the People.
Both leaders agreed to a strengthening of relations between China and South Korea.
"We decided to upgrade the overall partnership with South Korea to a strategic cooperative partnership," said President Hu Jintao.
Both leaders promised to work together to push forward the second stage of the six-party process, Hu said.
Relations between North and South Korea were high on the agenda.
"President Hu Jintao has expressed his firm support for the peaceful talks and dialogue, for the achievement of peaceful unity, and the improvement of relations between the North and the South," Lee said.
Lee Myung-bak, a former Hyundai executive and Seoul mayor, took office in February and made his first overseas trip to the United States.
The visit last month with US President George W. Bush included a weekend retreat at Camp David that had Lee gushing about his warm welcome.
Lee's US trip was aimed at rebuilding Washington-Seoul ties that frayed during a decade of liberal South Korean rule.
Lee was expected to reassure top Beijing leaders that rejuvenated ties with the US will not interfere with South Korea's bond with China.
During his trip he is expected to speak at Peking University and to travel to the eastern city of Qingdao in Shandong province, where many South Korean companies have set up operations across the Yellow Sea from the Korean peninsula.
China fought against South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a cease-fire that has never been replaced with a peace treaty.
The two countries only established diplomatic relations in 1992.
During Lee's trip the two countries were also expected to touch on the continuing dispute over North Korea's nuclear programs.

Former president Lee Myung-bak leaves home for questioning by prosecutors
'운명의 날' 앞둔 이명박 자택서 조사대비…'폭풍전야'

Jeong-yeon, how are thin...
Earlier, a few people came with a sign that read 'A good day to go to jail,' showing support for the government's initiative to rule out corruption.
There was also a female protester who was prevented from getting too close to Lee's car as he left.
The drive from Lee's residence to the Prosecutors' Office is around four-point-seven kilometers and it took them just eight minutes to arrive thanks to the traffic controls and police escort.
And before the ex-president left,... a few political heavyweights dropped by his place this morning. Did they have anything to say to the press?
Yes, there was a comment from lawmaker Kim Young-woo,-- former defense minister during the Lee Myung-bak administration.
When asked for a comment on today's situation, he said the current Moon administration has been running to get MB to stand at the photo line, and today that dream has come true.
He added that such political tragedies should not be repeated.
With that comment he headed into the former president's house.
Other well-known faces that dropped by today include Lee Dong-gwan , former presidential spokesperson, Kim Hyo-jae , Former Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs, and , former Minister of Public Administration and Security.
That's a wrap at Lee's residence for now.
Back to you, Mark.
