Teluk Intan (Chinese:安順) is a town in Hilir Perak, Perak, Malaysia. It is the district capital and largest town in Hilir Perak district and third largest town in the state of Perak with an estimated population of around 120,000, about half of Hilir Perak district's total population (232,900).
In the early days, the town was known as Teluk Mak Intan, after a female Mandailing trader. It was here that the Perak rulers held court from 1528 until Kuala Kangsar became the royal town in 1877.
During the British protectorate era, the named was changed to Teluk Anson (Anson Bay), in honour of a British Officer and last Lieutenant-Governor of Penang, Major-General Sir Archibald Edward Harbord Anson who drew the plan of the modern township in 1882.
In 1982 during the centenary of the town's establishment, the name was changed again to Teluk Intan (Diamond Bay) by the Sultan of Perak. Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan is one of the town attractions. The town has a number of colonial buildings and Chinese shophouses together with modern buildings, few shopping complexes and a modern cinema.
The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan (Malay:Menara Jam Condong Teluk Intan) is the Malaysia equivalent of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. It is located in the centre of the town of Teluk Intan, Perak. The tower is slanted leftward, similar to the Tower of Pisa. It is 25.5 metres tall and, from the outside, looks like an 8 storey building, though inside it is actually divided into 3 storeys.
The tower is located in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong.
Purpose
The purpose for building the tower, also known as the Clock Tower, was to store water for the locals during the drought season, in case of fire. The clock on the tower was also used to keep time.
History
The tower was built under the guidance of contractor Leong Choon Chong in the late 19th century. However, it was claimed by a Briton, Neol Danison, and then the Japanese during their occupation of Malaysia in 1941. During this time, the tower became the Japanese’s watch tower.
This is a list of leaning towers. A leaning tower is a tower which, either intentionally, or unintentionally (due to errors in design, construction or to subsequent external influence) does not stand perpendicular to the ground. The most famous example is the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan - Mainland Malaysia 8
This video takes place in Teluk Intan, Malaysia, and starts with a tour of my yurt. Next, we are off to check out the city and it's main attraction, the leaning water tower from 1885. It is pretty spectacular to see at night because it is lit up with many lights seen throughout the plaza. I continue on my road trip to Kuala Lumpar where my car is attacked by hungry monkeys!

Malaysias own leaning tower in Teluk Intan draws visitors
Malaysia has its very own leaning tower, a tilting brick-and-wood building with Chinese-style architecture that was built in the 19th century during colonial times. But beyond its tilt, a result of flooding, the 25.5-metre (83 feet) tower in the middle of the town of Teluk Intan, has little in common with its much taller Italian namesake in the city of Pisa. Despite that, visitors take in the sight and snap photos in front of the historical landmark.

Walk: The LEANING TOWER of Teluk Intan, Perak - a National Heritage
Built at the end of the 19th century, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan or Menara Condong in Bahasa Malaysia; was built to be a water tower to keep a reservoir for the dry season or in case of fire. Unfortunately, the ground was too soft to support the tower’s weight, which caused it to tilt or lean.
Location wise, the Leaning Tower is in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong. I personally find the best angle to view the leaning tower is from the Hong Leong Bank direction towards the tower.
The tower is truly a sight to behold at night when it's illuminated in a multi-color sequence. Definitely Teluk Intan's most iconic landmark by a long mile. If you are visiting, do check out the many stores surrounding the leaning tower.

The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan (Malay: Menara Condong Teluk Intan; Chinese: 安顺斜塔) is a leaning clock tower in Teluk Intan, Hilir Perak District, Perak, Malaysia. It is the Malaysian equivalent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is 25 m (82 ft) and, from the outside, looks like an 8 storey building, though inside it is actually divided into 3 storeys.
History
The tower was built to store water during the dry season, in case of fire as well as to keep time.
It was built under contractor Leong Choon Chong in 1885 but was claimed by a Briton, Neol Danison, and then by the Japanese during their occupation of Malaya in 1941 when they used it as a watch tower. After the country gained independence in 1957, the tower became an official national monument.
Design
The pagoda style structure was greatly influenced by Chinese architecture, because the majority of the population of the town at that time was Chinese. Each storey is 5 metres high and there are a total of 110 steps from the ground floor to the top of the tower.
The water tank, which is 5 metres high and 18.36 cubic metres deep, is on the third floor and is made of steel. The foundation is 13 metres in diameter and tapers to a diameter of 8.2 metres at the top of the tower.
Leaning
The reasons why the tower leans is the soft ground on which it was built, as well as the weight of the water in the water tank, which causes it to lean towards the southwest.

Menara Condong Teluk Intan telah dibina pada tahun 1885. Asalnya tangki air dan menara jam. Kecondongan disebabkan struktur tanah yang lembut.
The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan (Malay: Menara Jam Condong Teluk Intan) is a clock tower in Teluk Intan, Hilir Perak District, Perak, Malaysia. It is the Malaysian equivalent of the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. The tower is slanted leftward, similar to the Tower of Pisa. It is 25.5 metres tall and, from the outside, looks like an 8 storey building, though inside it is actually divided into 3 storeys.
