Laser printing traces its history to efforts by Gary Starkweather at Xerox in 1969, which resulted in a commercial system called the Xerox 9700. IBM followed this with the IBM 3800 system in 1976. Both machines were large, room-filling devices handling the combined output of many users. During the mid-1970s, Canon started working on similar machines, and partnered with Hewlett-Packard to produce 1980's HP 2680, which filled only part of a room. Other copier companies also started development of similar systems.
HP introduced their first desktop model with a Ricoh engine for $12,800 in 1983. Sales of the non-networked product were unsurprisingly poor. In 1983 Canon introduced the LBP-CX, a desktop laser printer engine using a laser diode and featuring an output resolution of 300 dpi. In 1984, HP released the first commercially available system based on the LBP-CX, the HP LaserJet.
You know, I have been holding onto this damn thing now for almost 10 years. I really should at least try to see if it can be tamed into working....

Beware of the talking printer
Printers are still the worst but at least new ink-tank printers help you save money on ink. WSJ’s Joanna Stern survived testing 10 home printers from Epson, HP, Brother and Canon to tell you which are worth buying.
Personal Technology With Joanna Stern
Technology is overwhelming and making decisions about what gadget to buy is harder than ever. WSJ personal tech columnist Joanna Stern makes it all a bit easier in her lively and informative videos.

Clip 1 of 6 clips from a 1987 Apple training Video for resellers. Parts 1-4 are titled "Training for the Laserwriter II Family of Printers."
1. Extending the Lead
2. The Print Controller
3. Imaging
4. Xerography
Part 5 on the tape is "An Introduction to the Apple MIDI Interface" which I have split into clips 5 and 6.
