Before their double-set show (one containing hits and deep cuts while the other included playing their new album, The Desaturating Seven, from front to back), guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde hopped onstage to show off all his Fender and PRS guitars, detail his latest switch to Orange Dark Terrors, and he finally explains how he uses traditional stompboxes with a Fractal Axe-Fx.
“I don’t know why this became my current No. 1, but it just is,” says LaLonde about his sunburst Fender American Deluxe Strat. “Something about this guitar just makes it sound amazing.” In addition to being his go-to road warrior, he used it quite a bit in the studio to record Primus’ new albu...

Chordplay - The Chords Of Primus
Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Primus. I've noticed several requests to feature some of Primus' avant-garde and experimental progressive funk-rock music, along with the interesting guitar stylings of the legendary (but often misunderstood) six-string genius Larry "Ler" LaLonde.
Larry studied with Joe Satriani back in the day and literally helped create death metal in the early 1980s, as he appears on three important albums by the group Possessed - including the landmark genre-defining album 'Seven Churches' from 1985. While "Ler's" playing style and output with Primus may perk your ears up and leave a few listeners with an eerie unsettled vibe, there's no question that Larry's unique and finger-twisting approach to the guitar/music is worthwhile to c...

Ler began his Riff Lord journey at the tender age of 12 when one of his middle school buddies talked him into attending a concert. Not just any concert, it was none other than prog-rock immortals Rush. For an encore, Ler got to see the mighty Van Halen up close and personal. And that was all it took. Not long after these two seminal experiences, Ler got his first electric guitar, and there was no turning back.
Not only was he inspired by Eddie, Randy Rhoads, and Yngwie Malmsteen, his guitar teacher also had a bit of an influence on him; a dude by the name of Joe Satriani…yes Professor Satchafunkilus himself! He joined a bay area Thrash band called Possessed and became well-acquainted with other notable Bay Area metal monsters like Slayer and Metallica. All this exposure to such a variety of artists and influences helped Ler develop an eclectic playing style and further ignited his musical curiosity. By the time he joined Primus, he was more than up for the challenge of playing in a band that afforded him an incredible amount of creative freedom. Ler and bandmate Les Claypool helped Primus become a regular fixture on major tours and festival circuits throughout the 80s and 90s. Their style could be characterized as quirky, funky, and irreverent, but whatever you call it, you can’t ignore it.
In 2024 Primus took to the road with Coheed & Cambria and have released a three-song split EP entitled Sessanta with tracks by Primus, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle featuring one track by each band, all of them cowritten by Maynard James Keenan.

“Something about this guitar just makes it sound amazing.” In addition to being his go-to road warrior, he used it quite a bit in the studio to record Primus’ new album, The Desaturating Seven. All of his 6-strings take Dunlop .009–.046 strings. His guitars are typically tuned to standard, but if Larry is feeling heavy, he’ll tune down to dropped-D.
Another main ride for the band’s current tour is this custom Fender Stratocaster that is decked out in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory colors because the band recorded an album as an ode to the Wilder film in 2014, so LaLonde commissioned Fender to build him some custom-painted Strats for the subsequent tour. This one sounded so good (it’s loaded with unknown DiMarzio single-coils) that he continues to use it on tour and in the studio.

While "Ler's" playing style and output with Primus may perk your ears up and leave a few listeners with an eerie unsettled vibe, there's no question that Larry's unique and finger-twisting approach to the guitar/music is worthwhile to check out for some insight into creating unusual and left-field guitar parts, riffs, and musical ideas.
The music in this episode was pulled from three classic Primus albums and includes chord work/rhythm guitar parts from songs such as 'Groundhog's Day,' 'Wynona's Big Brown Beaver,' 'Southbound Pachyderm,' 'Fish On,' 'Too Many Puppies,' 'John The Fisherman,' and 'American Life,' not to mention a special look at finding several dissonant intervals on the guitar, along with directing you toward Larry's signature use of b5 power chords, which are commonly found in his music.
Needless to say, if you're a Primus/Larry LaLonde fan, a fan of experimental guitar music, or maybe just a player searching for some new ideas and unusual chord twists to add to their bag of tricks - this lesson is totally for you!
