Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya. Lamu Old Town, the principal inhabited part of the island, is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant center for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures.

The island is linked by boat to Mokowe on the mainland and to Manda Island, where there is an airport. There are no roads on the island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

A port was founded on the island of Lamu by Arab traders at least as early as the fourteenth century, when the Pwani Mosque was built. The island prospered on the slave trade. After defeating Pate Island in the nineteenth century, the island became a local power, but it declined after the British forced the closure of the slave markets in 1873. In 1890 the island became part of Zanzibar and remained obscure until Kenya was granted independence from Great Britain in 1963. Tourism developed from the 1970s, mainly around the eighteenth century Swahili architecture and traditional culture.

Lamu

Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 kilometres (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island. It is the headquarters of Lamu County and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lamu is Kenya's oldest continually inhabited town, and was one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa, founded in 1370.

The town contains the Lamu Fort on the seafront, which commenced construction under Fumo Madi ibn Abi Bakr, the sultan of Pate, and was completed after his death in the early 1820s. Lamu is also home to 23 mosques, including the Riyadha Mosque, built in 1900, and a donkey sanctuary.

Lamu Island, Kenya - Ever since I was a child growing up in Kenya, I had wanted to visit Lamu Island. It’s one of the best places in the world to experience authentic Swahili culture and food - and so in this video we’re going on an ultimate Kenyan food tour of Lamu, plus in the evening, we were able to take a ride of a dhow with an amazing bbq! Shela Village, Lamu - During our visit to Lamu we stayed in Shela Village, a little down the coast from Lamu Old Town. Shela is a beautiful place though, quiet and serene. In the morning we set out by boat to Lamu Old town to get the street food and sightseeing tour started. Lamu Old Town - Lamu Old Town is one of those ancient cities where everywhere you look there’s something fascinating. The old narrow lanes are a joy to explore, and you also have to dodge donkeys everywhere. We enjoyed a mix of small snacks including fried cassava, coffee, sweet sesame brittle, and coconuts. The central market in Lamu Town is also a great colorful place to walk around and explore, and to see what types of ingredients are most common in Swahili food. The highlight of the street food in Lamu for me though, were the mishakiki, grilled skewers of beef meat served with pilipili. Lamu Island, Kenya - Ever since I was a child growing up in Kenya, I had wanted to visit Lamu Island. It’s one of the best places in the world to experience authentic Swahili culture and food - and so in this video we’re going on an ultimate Kenyan food tour of Lamu, plus in the evening, we were able to take a ride of a dhow with an amazing bbq! Shela Village, Lamu - During our visit to Lamu we stayed in Shela Village, a little down the coast from Lamu Old Town. Shela is a beautiful place though, quiet and serene. In the morning we set out by boat to Lamu Old town to get the street food and sightseeing tour started. Lamu Old Town - Lamu Old Town is one of those ancient cities where everywhere you look there’s something fascinating. The old narrow lanes are a joy to explore, and you also have to dodge donkeys everywhere. We enjoyed a mix of small snacks including fried cassava, coffee, sweet sesame brittle, and coconuts. The central market in Lamu Town is also a great colorful place to walk around and explore, and to see what types of ingredients are most common in Swahili food. The highlight of the street food in Lamu for me though, were the mishakiki, grilled skewers of beef meat served with pilipili. Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya. Lamu Old Town, the principal inhabited part of the island, is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant center for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures.

The island is linked by boat to Mokowe on the mainland and to Manda Island, where there is an airport. There are no roads on the island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

A port was founded on the island of Lamu by Arab traders at least as early as the fourteenth century, when the Pwani Mosque was built. The island prospered on the slave trade. After defeating Pate Island in the nineteenth century, the island became a local power, but it declined after the British forced the closure of the slave markets in 1873. In 1890 the island became part of Zanzibar and remained obscure until Kenya was granted independence from Great Britain in 1963. Tourism developed from the 1970s, mainly around the eighteenth century Swahili architecture and traditional culture.
