Lamma Island Hong Kong
Lamma Island has long been known as a laid-back place with a hipsterish vibe, though it still clings on to the traditional way of life associated with fishing villages on the outlying islands. You can feel the air of relaxation as soon as you alight from the ferry in Yung Shue Wan and begin the stroll down the narrow main street, passing a clutch of seafood restaurants, craft shops, bookstores and cafes.
It’s worth taking a slight detour to the Tin Hau temple while you’re in the village. This particular temple has an interesting feature that makes it stand out from the rest — a pair of Western-style lions guarding the entrance. This interesting East-meets-West anomaly came about when the temple’s original lions were damaged in 1960 and the mason hired to replace them happened to special...

Lamma Island - Best Island in Hong Kong?
In this travel vlog from Hong Kong I bring you along to beautiful Lamma Island, which is located just a short ferry ride from Hong Kong Island. To get here you can take the ferry from Central ferry pier. Head to the north part of the island and then hike to the south and take the boat back. This route can also be done in reverse. The island is popular among expats and here you definitely feel a slower phase of life. On the island there are no cars, so to get around you either have to walk or bike. In the evening I also headed to my first concert in Hong Kong. Enjoy!

[4K] Lamma Island Yung Shue Wan, Hong Kong walk
Feb. 2021
This is a short walk through the high street of Yung Shue Wan, a small town on Lamma Island, about 25 minutes by ferry from Hong Kong's downtown Central district.
It's a short walk and very different from the Hong Kong Island / Kowloon urban areas. The town feels like a busy village, and is a popular tourism destination for Hong Kongers, with a nice beach, hiking routes and plenty of dining options all easily accessible!

Lamma Island: The Secret Lives of Hong Kong's Fishermen
Lamma Island- a backwater fishing village only 8 miles from downtown Hong Kong. Here the fishermen live on floating rafts in sheltered bays, surrounded by untouched wilderness. There are no cars and they still do things the old fashioned way.
Until… the first ferry arrives at 8AM and unloads its cargo of tourists. They come to eat the fresh-caught seafood:
• Mantis shrimp,
• Bamboo clams,
• Giant scallops
• Horseshoe crabs
• Sea snails
• Fish
• Lobster,
• And other stuff.
…all cooked on the spot while their customers enjoy the camaraderie, the food, and the stunning view.
But something’s wrong.
The village feels strangely dead. There are no children playing. No elderly exercising in the park. Hardly anyone around at all.
The villagers, it turns out, were relocated to apartments on Hon...

Sok Kwu Wan
Take the trail
Follow the path that takes you to the attractive Hung Shing Yeh Beach — only slightly marred by the huge power station to your right — before you begin the gentle ascent up the Lamma Island Family Trail that affords splendid views over the other outlying islands from the top.
The path takes you down to Sok Kwu Wan where you can see ample evidence of the village’s fishing traditions, including the fish farm rafts spread out across the bay. At the Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village you can explore the local fishing culture and find out more about the history of the fishing industry in Hong Kong.
There’s only one way to finish your day in Lamma and that’s to find an outdoor table at one of the many seafood restaurants and chow down on the freshest fish, prawns, squid and clams you will ever taste. It’s truly a treat for the senses.
“Central exit C & Take a ferry from Central Pier No. 4 to Yung Shue Wan. It takes about 30 minutes.
Leaving from Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island:
Take a ferry from Sok Kwu Wan to Central or Aberdeen.

In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. During this time my love for travel grew and I tried to travel to new places during my weekends off from university. Throughout uni I made travel a priority and worked multiple side jobs to fund my travels. After doing my thesis in Hong Kong I graduated in June 2019. At this point I decided to take a gap year and go traveling. My goal was to visit as many countries as possible. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing. EXPLORE LAMMA ISLAND IN HONG KONG!
For a quick getaway in Hong Kong, and to explore an outlying island, Lamma Island is a great option for a great day trip. Lamma Island has two main villages, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, and both of them have ferry piers with ferries connecting from the Central Ferry Pier 4. The Western Pier goes to Sok Kwu Wan and the Eastern Pier goes to Yung Shue Wan. The ferry ride is about 30 minutes and the ferry schedule can be found here: http://www.hkkf.com.hk/index.php?op=timetable&style=en.
LAMMA ISLAND FAMILY TRAIL/WALK
The super easy and flat hiking trail, that is great for strollers, and the whole family because the whole trail is paved and flat, is called the Lamma Island Family Trail and you can do the entire round trip (10km), or rather, in our case, we started from Yung Shue Wan, and then hiked over to Sok Kwu Wan for dinner at Lamma Island Rainbow Seafood Restaurant. One way is about 1.5 hours and 5 km.
LAMMA RAINBOW SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
They are by far the most famous and known restaurant on Lamma Island. One thing great about eating at Rainbow is that they have their own ferries (free with meal) to bring you back to either the Central Ferry Pier or the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier (details and timetable on their website) at night. Or alternatively, you can schedule for them to pick you up from either those ferry piers for a complimentary ride to Lamma Island.
ADDRESS:
Lamma Rainbow Seafood Restaurant
Lamma Island, Outlying, G/F, 23-27, Sok Kwu Wan First St
Phone: 2982 8100
http://www.lammarainbow.com/?lang=en
On the main street at Yung Shue Wan, there are lots of little shops and coffee shops just to relax and to browse, and there are other temples there to visit too.
ATTRACTIONS REACHABLE FROM THE LAMMA ISLAND FAMILY WALK
LAMMA WINDS (closer to Yung Shue Wan)
Detours during the hike that you can do is to visit the Lamma Winds (windmills), which is a 25 minute steeper hike upwards, in which I opted out because it was so hot the day I went. Lamma Winds is Hong Kong's first wind power plant.
KAMIKAZE GROTTOS (closer to Sok Kwu Wan)
The grotto that the Japanese, during World War 2 had intended to use to hide their speed boats.
PENIS ROCKS (on Mount Stenhouse)
I have just learned that there are penis rocks on Lamma Island in which you can visit and they're located on Mount Stenhouse, which is the tallest mountain on Lamma Island. Here is the video that has detailed instructions to help you get there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8zYNhHdyYk
There are beaches and lookout pavilions not mentioned as we literally just went to Lamma Island to eat at the Rainbow Seafood Restaurant and decided to hike there instead to make a half day out of it.

PS. I found these videos on my phone; this was filmed entirely on my Iphone so excuse the quality.

Founded in late 2016, Humid with a Chance of Fishballs Tours is a small grassroots independent company that strives to offer authentic and off-the-beaten path tours so tourists and expats alike can get a taste and glimpse of true local life in Hong Kong.
We run tours in Hong Kong for people that truly want to see the real, true, local and authentic sides of Hong Kong. The stories and information we want to share is about the hole-in-the-wall owners, and about the local foods that have so much history and importance to Hong Kong. We go into shops that don't speak a lick of English, because we bridge the gap between the West and the East. Eat through Hong Kong's heritage, culture and tradition with us!

The villagers, it turns out, were relocated to apartments on Hong Kong almost twenty years ago so that the government could develop the island for tourism. The workers arrive half an hour before the tourists and go home at day’s end.
None of that fresh seafood is local.
• The shrimp is flown in from the Philippines.
• The mud crabs and geoduck clams from the United States.
• The abalone from South Africa.
The floats are used mostly to shoot fireworks during festivals. A few older villagers refused to leave and still live in crumbling houses well off the tourist path. They don’t blame their neighbors for taking the government’s offer But they really miss the community and camaraderie that once filled the island with laughter and joy.
