Lalla Romano

Lalla Romano (November 11, 1906 in Demonte – June 26, 2001 in Milan) was an Italian novelist, poet, and journalist.

Life and work

She came from a noteworthy Piedmontese family, Giuseppe Peano was her great-uncle, and originally had an interest in painting. She continued to paint, gaining some attention with painting, throughout her life. She attended the University of Turin where Cesare Pavese led her to an increased interest in writing. She graduated with a degree in literature than worked as a librarian and teacher. During World War II she joined with the Resistance. After the war she became noted for writings that drew on personal and family experiences.

Legacy

In 2009, there was a retrospective at Aosta.

Lalla

Lalla (c. 720–790 CE) was an Indian mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer who belonged to a family of astronomers. Lalla was the son of Trivikrama Bhatta and the grandson of Śâmba, and he lived in central India, possibly in the Lāṭa region in modern south Gujarat. Lalla was known as being one of the leading Indian astronomers during the eighth century. Only two of Lalla's works are currently thought to be extant.

His most famous work was titled Śiṣya-dhī-vṛddhida-tantra, or "Treatise which expands the intellect of students." This text is one of the first major Sanskrit astronomical texts known from the period following the 7th-century works of Brahmagupta and Bhāskara I. It generally treats the same astronomical subject matter and demonstrates the same computational techniques as earlier authors, although there are some significant innovations, such that Lalla’s treatise offers a compromise between the rival astronomical schools of his predecessors, Āryabhaṭa I and Brahmagupta. Although Lalla is known to be a follower of Āryabhaṭa, he combines techniques from both. It is within "Śiṣyadhīv ṛddhidatantra" that the earliest known description of a perpetuum mobile is described.

Lalla (title)

Lalla (ⵍⴰⵍⵍⴰ) (literally, "lady") is a (Moroccan) Amazigh title of respect. The title is a prefix to her given name or personal name, and is used by females usually of noble or royal background. It may also be used to address older women out of respect. Any woman believed to be descended from Mohammed has the title of Lalla. Likewise, any man who is believed to be descended from Mohammed has the title of Sidi or Moulay (Moulay being a higher honorific).
