Once part of the contiguous Mississippi River, Lake Washington formed when the river changed its course about 1300 AD.
Characteristics
Lake vegetation includes duckweed and cypress trees.
Fish species found in Lake Washington include bowfin, bream (bluegill), buffalo, bullhead, carp, channel catfish, crappie, drum, flathead catfish, gar, green sunfish, hybrid white bass, largemouth bass, minnows, silversides and yellow bass.
History
The first permanent residence in Washington County was located on Lake Washington. P.L. Mann, a political figure and wealthy planter, built a mansion on the east shore of the lake before the Civil War. The home currently located on the site, Linden, was erected in 1914 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (HRHP).
Another pre-Civil War mansion, Mount Holly, constructed on the east shore of Lake Washington, is also listed on the NRHP.
Lake Washington received its present name in 1854 after Thomas Mercer suggested it be named after George Washington, as the new Washington Territory had been named the year before. Prior names for Lake Washington have included the Duwamish name Xacuabš (Lushootseed: literally great-amount-of-water), as well as Lake Geneva, Lake Duwamish, and the Chinook jargon name, "Hyas Chuck," meaning, "Big Lake."
The lake provides great sport fishing opportunities. Some species found in this lake are Coastal Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, and Black Crappie.
Lake Washington is the primary reservoir for the city of Newburgh, New York. It is located just southwest of the city, lying partially within it and the neighboring towns of Newburgh and New Windsor. It holds approximately 1.5billion US gallons (5,700,000m3), an amount equivalent to the city's annual consumption.
Recreational facilities such as picnic grounds are accessible to the public at Masterson Park, near the reservoir's spillway along NY 207.
History
Lake Washington was expanded and put into service as a reservoir in 1907, although it had been providing water to its predecessor, Monell's Pond, since 1852. The dam has been raised many times since then to increase capacity.
Masterson Park
Resident Frank Masterson had long dreamed of a place where the disabled, senior citizens and military veterans could go to fish. After his death in 1973, his friends decided to honor his memory by establishing such a park, and it was opened the following year.
It is managed by the city's Recreation Department, and fishing is allowed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trout and pickerel, among others, can be taken. Boats can be rented for $6–14.
Lake Washington is the largest lake in Brevard County, Florida at 4,362 acres (17.65km2). The lake may have been named for the U.S. Deputy Surveyor Colonel Henry Washington, after he surveyed the area in 1844.
Hydrology
It is the 41st largest lake in the state of Florida. It is approximately 4 by 1 mile (6.4 by 1.6km) and 10 to 15 feet (3.0 to 4.6m) deep.
Located adjacent to the City of Melbourne, it is the single most important source of fresh water for the city and the surrounding areas. It furnishes two-thirds of the water to Melbourne's 150,000 customers.
The John A. Buckley Surface Water Treatment Plant is located nearby. It is owned by the City of Melbourne and furnishes it, and other cities, with potable water.
It is one of the lakes that make up the St. Johns River system. Further downstream is the neighboring Lake Winder.
Economy
Exit 183 off Interstate 95 provides access to the lake.
At the dead end of Lake Washington Road is Lake Washington Park, where boating is permitted. The park contains a playground and pavilions for parties.
This area along the Mississippi River had long been inhabited by indigenous peoples. At the time of European encounter, the Natchez people controlled much of the area. They were descendants of the earlier Mississippian culture that had built earthwork mounds.
European Americans, settling the area after the American Revolutionary War, named the town for George Washington. Some of the original settlers of the area were Colonel Andrew Ellicott, Joseph Calvit and John Foster. Washington became the second territorial capital, when the seat of the Mississippi Territory's legislature was moved from Natchez to Washington on February 1, 1802.
The Mississippi statehood convention of 1817 met in Washington at the Methodist Meeting House (which was purchased by Jefferson College in 1830). After Mississippi was admitted to the union in 1817, the legislature met once in Washington, and afterward in Natchez. The capital was officially moved to Jackson in 1822, in keeping with the Act passed by the Assembly on November 28, 1821, which chose to have a more central location for better accessibility to more residents.
Jackson is the state capital and largest city, with a population of around 175,000 people. The state overall has a population of around 3 million people. Mississippi is the 32nd most extensive and the 32nd most populous of the 50 United States.
The state is heavily forested outside of the Mississippi Delta area. Its riverfront areas were cleared for slave-cultivated cotton production before the American Civil War, but after the war, the bottomlands were cleared mostly by freedmen. African Americans made up two-thirds of the property owners in the Delta by the end of the 19th century, but timber and railroad companies acquired much of the land. Clearing altered the ecology of the Delta, increasing the severity of flooding along the Mississippi. Much land is now held by agribusinesses. A largely rural state with agricultural areas dominated by industrial farms, Mississippi is ranked low or last among the states in such measures as health, educational attainment, and median household income. The state's catfishaquaculture farms produce the majority of farm-raised catfish consumed in the United States.
Mississippi was an Australian band (1972–1975), which featured some big names in Australian rock music including Graeham Goble, Beeb Birtles and Kerryn Tolhurst. The band started as Allison Gros in Adelaide, South Australia in 1970 and moved to Melbourne in 1971 where they recorded as Allison Gros, Drummond and in 1972 became Mississippi which eventually evolved into Little River Band by 1975.
History
1970-1972: Allison Gros and Drummond
"Allison Gross" is a traditional English folk ballad with the most widely recognised version recorded by Steeleye Span on their 1973 album Parcel of Rogues. The Adelaide based folk-rock band Allison Gros is believed to be named after this folk ballad and consisted of Graeham Goble (vocals, guitar), Russ Johnson (vocals, guitar), John Mower (vocals, guitar) and Shane Simons (drums). They recorded one single on independent label Gamba "Naturally" released in 1970. The band moved to Melbourne in 1971 and signed to the Fable Records label and released two singles; "If I Ask You" and "All the Days". Under the pseudonym Drummond they recorded a 'chipmunk' version of the 1950s rock song "Daddy Cool", which spent 7 weeks at the top of the Australian national charts from September 1971. The success of their single rode largely on the back of the success of Australian band Daddy Cool, who had scored a number one hit for 10 weeks with "Eagle Rock", which Drummond's single replaced at #1.

Bring water tablets or a water filter as there are many lakes along the way. If you haven't done a lot of hiking before, then the enchantments day hike is not for you. You need a decent amount of experience and fitness to be able to complete this in a day. Good luck and enjoy hiking the enchantments in Washington!

Whether you want to hike right up to waterfalls, admire snow-capped mountains from a distance or spend the day on islands off the coast, Washington has it all. It is easy to pack your vacation with city life, world-class attractions, national parks and more while in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Washington State:
