Revitalizing the Maurepas Swamp
The restoration of Maurepas Swamp is a unique opportunity for the CPRA to expand coastal habitat restoration and sustainability projects beyond rebuilding coastal marshes and barrier islands.
Maurepas Swamp is a massive area of old-growth cypress-tupelo swamp nestled between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that separates Lake Maurepas from the Mississippi River. The swamp was once connected to areas that were flooded annually by the Mississippi, but it was isolated by levees more than a century ago. The natural hydrology of the swamp has also been interrupted by roadbeds and spoil banks from oil and gas canals.

6 Foot Alligator Gar Caught In Lake Maurepas
Robby Scott is an avid Alligator Gar fisherman looking to spread awareness about the species.
"Most of the time when alligator gar are caught they are disregarded as “trash fish”, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Many of the Alligator Gar caught are much older than the angler catching them. Not only do these fish grow to be very old, they play an extremely important role in Louisiana’s rivers, bayou, lakes, and canals. Unfortunately, Alligator Gar were populated in over 10 states at one point, but are now strictly limited to living in the south due to habitat destruction and over harvesting. To help the species continue to live in Louisiana, I use a 1/0 Gamakatsu live bait hook and $10 300lb braid as a leader. This allows for the fish to swim off okay without any wire and treb...

To bring back some of the nutrients and increase water health, in 2022 the CPRA is planning to begin construction of a structure on the Mississippi River that will allow for a relatively small but vastly important flow of water at 2,000 cubic feet per second through the swamp. Approximately 45,000 acres of imperiled swamp will slowly come back to life, limiting the saltwater intrusion brought by hurricanes and improving fisheries. Hopefully, a boost to waterfowl hunting and migratory and native wildlife habitat will follow.

If the fish does happen to swallow the 1/0 hook, they do not experience any form of injury and starvation that a treble hook would cause. The fish I caught in this video was slightly above 6 foot, judging by the comparison next to my 7 foot Ugly Stik tiger rod. I posted this video on my YouTube channel “Reeling With Robby” where I post the Alligator Gar I catch and spread awareness for the species and my biggest catches in East Louisiana!"
