A recent issue of Route Magazine had an article about Lake Havasu, calling it the Bermuda Triangle of the West. On two different occasions, planes have crashed into the lake, never to be seen again. That's despite over 700,000 people visiting the lake every year, and in one of the cases, multiple witnesses saw where the plane crashed, but its still missing.
Lake Havasu is a large reservoir on the Colorado River, located on the border of Arizona and California, that was formed after the Parker Dam was completed in 1938. Nowadays the lake is a very popular recreation area, but prior to the 1960s the area was pretty remote.
The first plane to go missing in the lake disappeared in 1943, during the height of World War II. The pilot managed to parachute to safety, but his Pursuit P-40 was never seen again.
Seventeen years later, in 1960, another plane crashed into the lake, this one carrying two brothers from California on a hunting trip. Multiple witnesses on the ground and air saw the crash and both bodies were recovered less than two hours after the crash. The plane however, has still not been found.

Lake Havasu City Arizona is a gorgeous waterfront city on Lake Havasu with a population of approximately sixty thousand people. Lake Havasu is a large reservoir formed by the Parker Dam on the Colorado River. Lake Havasu straddles the border between Arizona and California with four hundred miles of stunning shoreline. Along the shores of Lake Havasu, there are twenty-seven fully functioning lighthouse replicas. The replicas were built to the specifications of the originals from the east coast, west coast and Great Lakes.
London Bridge is probably the most famous landmark in Lake Havasu City. It was originally built in 1831 to span the River Thames in London England. However, by 1962 it was no longer sturdy enough to carry the increased volume of traffic in London. Entrepreneur Robert McCulloch purchased the bridge for 2.4 million and had it shipped over piece by piece to the United States and had it reassembled in the Mojave Desert. Once the bridge was constructed, a channel was dredged underneath it and the bridge opened in 1971.
Lake Havasu city has some beautiful parks, such as Rotary Park which is right on the shores of the Lake Havasu. Another great park is London Bridge Beach Park, which is located right along the famous Bridgewater Channel. For $4 round trip you can take a ferry from Lake Havasu City to Havasu Landing Resort and Casino on the California side of the reservoir. Ferry trips depart hourly, just north of London Bridge.

Things to do in Lake Havasu City | Lake Havasu Travel Guide!
This City lies like an oasis in the middle of the Arizona desert, along the Colorado River. Here, everyone can experience the thrill of the desert and spectacular fun on the water, all in one place. Families can spend a day on the water or at the beach, and everyone can learn the fascinating history about how the famous London Bridge ended up far from home in this sunny, friendly Arizona town. Welcome to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
London Bridge:
This 280 meters long bridge is ideally located near downtown of the city and other exciting local attractions. The world-famous London Bridge was built in England during the 12th century and spanned the Thames River in London for over 600 years, during which time it frequently fell into disrepair. In 1831, a new bridge was completed and the old one demolished, but by the time the invention of the automobile rolled around it was clear that even this new bridge wasn’t built to handle London’s heavy traffic. In 1967, the City of London sold the historic bridge to Robert McCulloch, who dismantled it stone by stone and had it shipped and rebuilt in Lake Havasu City. Today, the London Bridge stands proudly over the Colorado River, and is the second-most popular attraction for visitors in Arizona, after the Grand Canyon. Walking tours of the bridge and its fascinating history are available from the Lake Havasu City Visitor Center.
Lake Havasu State Park:
Lake Havasu State Park is the place to go for camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, and more in a sunny and beautiful Arizona nature setting. The park is open to the public all year round, 24 hours a day, with outdoor trails and beachside campsites for tents or RVs, tucked right up against the gorgeous Colorado River. The park is a popular port of entry for boats on the river, and offers canoe and kayak rental to visitors looking for a day on the water as well as maps and guides for guests looking to explore the trails.
Rotary Community Park:
Centrally located and accessible either by land or boat, Rotary Community Park is a nice gateway to wind down and relax. As the largest public beach and park in Lake Havasu area, Rotary Community Park provides a great variety of recreational amenities to enjoy, from volleyball courts and a skate park to picnic areas and barbecues. The Rotary Community Park also has a two mile long path that loops around the entire park making it perfect for either jogging or walking.
London Brdige Beach:
There’s nothing quite like a sunny day at the beach, and Lake Havasu City is home to plenty of beautiful beaches where visitors can sunbathe, swim, and play.
London Bridge Beach is accessible to visitors by boat or car. The beach is a great place for a day out, with both grassy and sandy areas for picnics, parties, and relaxation. Among the London Bridge Beach’s many features are a swimming area, an off-leash dog park, sports courts, and two playgrounds for children. Seasonal rental of paddleboats, kayaks, and canoes is also available. The beach is open daily to the public from dawn until 11:00pm.
Lake Havasu Museum of History:
The Lake Havasu Museum of History tells the stories of the region’s rich history, from the culture and lifestyle of the Mojave Native Americans to the history of mining in Arizona.
Lighthouses:
Lake Havasu City is home to more lighthouses that any other city in the entire country. Actually, you can find as many or as little as you would like. In 2000, a group of concerned residents thought something needed to be done to improve night-time navigation for boating in Lake Havasu. The solution, twenty six miniature replicas of famous lighthouses were constructed on the shores of the lake, and they have become a tourist attraction on their own. Each lighthouse’s beacon pattern is the same as the original one. Lighthouses on the west coast use a green beacon, and lighthouses in the east coast use a red one.
Hiking Trails:
As a popular destination for hiking in Arizona, trekkers can find that Lake Havasu is one of the best-kept secrets for hiking in Arizona.
Bird’s watching:
With more than 350 species identified, some of them threatened or endangered, Lake Havasu is rich in wonderful bird watching opportunities.
