Shellac vs Lacquer | Best Choice for Finishing Wood Furniture [2024]
Shellac vs Lacquer - Both shellac and lacquer can produce a high gloss finish, though lacquer has other sheen options. As far as color goes, shellac is known for its warm, amber tone.
Lacquer dries crystal clear (as long as you don’t choose an option with tint) and is popular because it doesn’t turn yellow over time like other finishes. Lacquer also typically has a smoother finish because you can apply it with a spray bottle.

Polyurethane is a synthetic resin. It’s a wood finish for furniture, floors, and cabinets. It’s usually applied to furniture by spraying or wiping. The reason for its usage on wood is its transparency and water-resistance.
Lacquer is widely known for its ease of application and short drying time. It’s the most used wood finish commercially. Its primary component is the resin of varnish trees. After harvesting and refining, the resin is mixed with thinner to create lacquer.
Lacquer:
* It’s compatible with various solvents.
* It doesn’t show yellowing over time.
* It’s relatively affordable.
* It looks sleek after application.
* It has low resistance to chemicals.
* You have to apply it again year after year.
* If it gets contaminated, defects will appear on the wood.
* If the room’s temperature is too warm, bubbles will appear.
* It’s harmful to the environment.
Polyurethane:
* It has a high load-bearing capacity.
* It has a high resistance against tears
* It doesn’t allow the growth of fungus due to its chemical structure.
* It has better color stability in outdoor settings.
* It’s more convenient for floors.
* It’s very flammable when in liquid form.
* It can be toxic if breathed in.
* It requires good room ventilation.

Polyurethane is a sealant that provides exceptional durability on wood surfaces, and is available as both a water-based sealant and an oil-based sealant. Polyurethane is very durable – some label it as “liquid plastic” while its still in the tub, because when it dries it will turn as hard as plastic.
Polyurethane:
* Water-based or oil-based
* Slow drying
* Matte, satin, glossy, and high gloss finish
* Very strong sealant
* Provides a shiny look when dry
Varnish is a clear protective finish. Varnish has little to no color and is primarily used in wood finishing applications where the final product will be in harsh conditions, such as sun or water. It can be applied over wood stains as well.

Learn how to use Chalk Paint® Lacquer by Annie Sloan over Chalk Paint®! Use a Sponge Roller or Flat Brush depending on your preference and make sure to stir thoroughly before use. Then apply when you're ready!
Chalk Paint® Lacquer is water-based, water resistant and has UV protection in it, meaning colours will not fade in the sun. It comes in a choice of Matt or Gloss. In this video, Annie will discuss the uses of both finishes.
You should apply two coats of Chalk Paint® Lacquer to ensure the whole surface is covered and for maximum durability. Although touch dry within hours, Lacquer will take up to 2 weeks to reach its full hardness, so be relatively gentle with it before then.
When applying Chalk Paint® Lacquer, bear in mind that it is a 'penetrating' finish and can pull tannins or stains from the wood up through the paint. This can be especially noticeable on whites, manifesting as a yellow stain. Always test Chalk Paint® paint and Lacquer on several areas before you begin your project. If a stain appears, simply apply a thin coat of Chalk Paint® Lacquer directly over the entire surface to be painted before painting and lacquering again.
Annie Sloan invented her revolutionary furniture paint, Chalk Paint®, in 1990 and hasn’t stopped refining and improving her formula since. There's no need for priming or sanding. Chalk Paint® is as easy to use as opening the tin, dipping your brush, and applying paint to furniture! Annie wanted to create one paint that could achieve several different techniques and finishes – from creating a textured chippy look to achieving a smooth modern finish, or even creating a wash. Annie's paint has minimal VOCs and is very easy to work with.
