In 2006, Lac Ste. Anne County had a population of 9,516 living in 4,567 dwellings, a 6.3% increase from 2001. The municipal district has a land area of 2,842.46km2 (1,097.48sqmi) and a population density of 3.3/km2 (8.5/sqmi).

The lake has a total area of 54.5km2, a maximum depth of 9 m, and an average depth of 4.8 m. Lac Ste. Anne lies at an elevation of 730 m, and has a drainage area of 619km2. The eutrophic lake is formed along the Sturgeon River through which it drains into the North Saskatchewan River. Two islands are found at the western end of the lake, Farming Island and Horse Island, while the small Castle Island and tiny Rock Island lie at the eastern tip of the lake.
Along the southern area coal mines generate power and employment, and of course recreational businesses have flourished because of the lakes. Agriculture is still a main stay and the area is known for its ability to grow some of the best oat crops in Canada.
History
Lac Ste. Anne was first called Wakamne, or God's Lake by the Nakota Sioux, and Manitou Sakhahigan (Lake of the Spirit) by the Creefirst nations before the arrival of the settlers.
On October 30, 1957 a stand alone plebiscite was held province wide in all 50 of the then current provincial electoral districts in Alberta. The government decided to consult Alberta voters to decide on liquor sales and mixed drinking after a divisive debate in the Legislature. The plebiscite was intended to deal with the growing demand for reforming antiquated liquor control laws.
The plebiscite was conducted in two parts. Question A asked in all districts, asked the voters if the sale of liquor should be expanded in Alberta, while Question B asked in a handful of districts within the corporate limits of Calgary and Edmonton asked if men and woman were allowed to drink together in establishments.
Province wide Question A of the plebiscite passed in 33 of the 50 districts while Question B passed in all five districts. Lac Ste. Anne voted in favour of the proposal with a landslide majority. Voter turnout in the district was poor, as it fell significantly below the province wide average of 46%.

History of Alberta's sacred Lac Ste. Anne pilgrimage ahead of the Pope's visit
Pope Francis will take part in the annual Lac Ste. Anne pilgrimage next week in Alberta, but the gathering has history dating back more than 130 years.
The first official pilgrimage to the sacred site, a lake that's believed to hold healing powers, was held in 1889. It began as a two-day gathering with the Métis, Indigenous and First Nations people attending a Cree sermon on one day, and an English sermon the following day.
Now it has seen tens of thousands of people journey there each year. Breanna Karstens-Smith explains.
