About the Song:
This is one of the first songs I wrote, laying in the backyard on the grass, rain pouring down. I felt so numb from heartbreak and I just let myself become rain. Tara MacLean- You In My Dreams
I never felt alone
I was happy on my own
And who would ever know there was something missing
I guess I didn`t see the possibility
It was waiting all the time
But it never crossed my mind
Till you opened up my eyes
Now all I think about is
CHORUS: You in my life
In my dreams
In my heart I know it`s true
That I belong with you
Because of you in my world
In my arms
I have everything and now
I can`t imagine what I`d do
Without you
I never thought that love could be
Such a curiosity
What attracted you to me
Was so unexpected
But it was waiting all the time
And it never crossed my mind
Until you opened up my eyes

The Song- Written in 1994 (at the age of 21) about a moment when I really needed to take a look at myself and ask myself who I really was. I had fallen apart and hit bottom. This song was my self portrait. I was beginning to see my patterns that were emerging as a result of a tumultuous childhood. I was self destructive, self sabotaging and I was wrestling with all my demons. That was before I learned to make friends with them. About the Song:
This is one of the first songs I wrote, laying in the backyard on the grass, rain pouring down. I felt so numb from heartbreak and I just let myself become rain. I went inside and wrote the words down that had come to me and this song was born. This was the song I was playing on the ferry when I was discovered by Nettwerk and played in the office for Sony Music Publishing when I got my deal with them. I recorded it as a one off for a compilation album called “Lit From Within” to benefit Rape Crisis Centres. I was told they began using the song to help in their therapy sessions, to unblock pain and release it. Knowing that a song I wrote had that kind of medicinal quality certainly changed the trajectory of my writing in that I learned that what healed me, could heal others. This song opened doors for me that I didn’t even know were there.
About the video:
I was excited to reimagine this song in the studio, as it is one of the first songs I wrote and recorded. I wanted to film in the nest on Salt Spring Island where I did the photo shoot for the book cover for Song of the Sparrow. Luckily, the amazing director Sydney Woodward agreed to film it for me, and so we have a moody west coast vibe that is very much a part of me. As an Atlantic Canadian who moved west, it felt important to capture my love for the rainforest that stole my heart as a young woman.

LYRICS:
Let Her Feel The Rain
written by Tara MacLean
Captured in a photograph
In black & white
Her hair brushes her shoulders
As she leans to turn out the light
She's warm and you can feel her
But she can't feel you
No she's just too numb to move
Captured in a photograph
Without a frame
I see you standing tall
But I see no face to blame
And did she say she loved you
Well you know that's really nice
Because they say that when she cries
Her tear drops turn they turn to ice
Let her feel the rain
Won't you let her feel again
Feeling through the pain
Won't you let her feel the rain
Upon her face
Let her feel the rain
Won't you let her feel the rain
Upon her face
Captured in a photograph
Inside her eyes
She'll wrap you in her blanket
And then she'll tell you some lies
And you will kneel before her
At her altar in the trees
Because they say no matter who you are
She'll bring you to your knees
Let her feel the rain...

This song is the thesis for the book “Song of the Sparrow”. It invites the idea that nothing is unforgivable, which is all I’m trying to peddle. Written on my new Martin Guitar right after my divorce, I felt free and alive deep in my heart when I wrote this. Like an arrow in a bow.
I love sending new songs into the world.
About the video:
I really wanted Catherine MacLellan to direct this music video and I was thrilled when she agreed! I am such a fan of her music and her filmmaking; she and I are like sisters. Some of the footage for Sparrow was partly filmed at Lake Echo, Nova Scotia by Melanie Stone the previous spring. She captured powerful moments of creating the recording with Daniel Ledwell. Back on PEI, Catherine and I spent a day together walking along the shoreline, and sitting by the fire. We wanted to capture me in my natural habitat, comfortable and at home. She spliced that together with Melanie’s studio footage and voilá! I am so happy with this video as I feel it is the most honest capture yet of who I really am.

LYRICS:
Sparrow
written by Tara MacLean
Spent my life
Looking for a missing piece
Desperate for some release
I heard a call
From deep inside
I was lonely I was tired
I was empty uninspired
I hit a wall
Something held me
Showed me to myself
Spent last night
Lookin’ for you in my bed
But you left before I said that you could go
Scream and shout
“til I’m pity partied out
Looking more like I’m about to be alone
Something changed me
Saved me from myself
It’s the arrow in the bow
The sparrow and the song
The marrow in the bone
Nothing’s unforgivable
When you let go
Sparrow
Spent my money on a guitar and a pen
And a book to write it in
So I could find
All along I was just missing a song
I had everything I needed all this time
Somehow I am
Finally myself
It’s the arrow in the bow
The sparrow and the song
The marrow in the bone
Nothing’s unforgivable
When you let go
Sparrow
Sparrow
When the bow breaks
Way up high
You can fall or you can fly
Trust the wind
Trust the wind and open sky
It’s the arrow in the bow….

The Song- Written in 1994 (at the age of 21) about a moment when I really needed to take a look at myself and ask myself who I really was. I had fallen apart and hit bottom. This song was my self portrait. I was beginning to see my patterns that were emerging as a result of a tumultuous childhood. I wanted to revisit this song as the woman I am now, and see if I could break some of those deeply ingrained patterns that I was still catching glimpses of. We lowered the key, and approached it with more maturity and perspective.
It was the first song I got into a movie soundtrack called Kissed, and then I sang it in the Jerry Bruckheimer film Coyote Ugly where I had a cameo. No matter how many years have gone by, this song reminds me how far I’ve come, and also how I have stayed the same.

The Video- This video was essential for me to make in order to have a personal breakthrough. I always loved to dance, but after an assault I began to dissociate from my body and I had no recall when it came to movement. I worked with Sublunar Films to come up with a concept where I would dance, on camera, but with the support of two master movement artists. In the video, they represent the male and female aspects of the psyche getting back into balance. In a kind of dream sequence, we work together in the liminal space to free me from the the past and help me see the true beauty again, to feel safe to inhabit my body. In the video, we witness me weeping on the floor as I dance through the fear using the music to move the pain through me. In the process I learned that my body is sacred and cannot be desecrated, and that nothing was taken from me after all. There are so many symbols in the video that relate to my memoir, Song of the Sparrow (HarperCollins); the window, the flowers, the corset. This video represents the reclamation of beauty and innocence as well as the deepening of wisdom.

This bottle in my hand
In the confusion
It seemed the safest place to land”

About the Song:
The song was written in the pandemic, during a breakup. It’s a song about how to get through the darkest times. This is a new song that is my testament for how I get through. It is an earnest call to find gratitude in the depths of pain. Produced with piano and strings and acoustic guitar, it leaves the listener with a sense of inspiration, and an understanding that no matter how dark it gets, we are never alone.
This is not only my favourite song on the album, it’s my favourite song I’ve written. One line in particular made me realize I am at a new level in my life. “Teach me how to bow when I am breaking.” How, in the middle of the greatest challenge, can we find gratitude for being alive? Even when we feel we can hardly breathe, even when the darkness is pulling us under, can we become the witness and see that it’s part of the essential training of strength and courage? Can we thank the darkness? Can we forgo the self pity and recognize the treasure in the pain? And in the song, I am speaking to Love. Love as an all encompassing force that is a limitless reservoir that we have access to when we need it.
About the video:
Making the video was amazing. Daniel Lanois, who is my favourite all time musician and songwriter, had listened to the song and gave me the idea to do the video in the dark, on a bed with a flashlight. I spoke to director Nathan Sizemore from Confound Films, who I was a huge fan of and had worked with before. He was totally into the concept and he nailed it. I got a room at the Broadview Hotel in Toronto and we filmed it in 4 hours.
THANK YOU to Factor Canada for funding this video. I am grateful for the support of Sony Music Publishing Canada and Music PEI in their support to helping me create this album, SPARROW.
LAY HERE IN THE DARK - LYRICS:
Music and Lyrics by Tara Maclean
Turn the light out
Close the door
Looking at the ceiling from the floor
Sooner or later
It was gonna catch up with me
It’s only failure
If I don’t feel everything
And when the ground falls beneath me
I’m gonna fight
I’m gonna hold on to the edge
For dear life
I’m gonna lay here in the dark
Lay here in the dark
Lay here in the dark until it gets light
Love I hear you call
You don’t look like I thought you would would at all
Love you’re all I have left
In this unfillable night of emptiness
And when the ground falls beneath me
I’m gonna fight
I’m gonna hold on to the edge
For dear life
I’m gonna lay here in the dark
Lay here in the dark
Lay here in the dark until it gets light
Love, This is gonna sting
I can feel the wounds are opening
Cause love, you are everything
Teach me how to bow when I am breaking
And when the ground….
