BAKU - Korea’s long and troubled history is largely defined by its geographic position between larger powers. The struggle to find a balance between Japan and China repeatedly facilitated a tug of war that enabled internal division and invited foreign intervention in the Korean Peninsula.

Camp David Summit: Historical, first-ever trilateral summit of USA, Japan, S.Korea concludes
US President Joe Biden sealed new security cooperation with Japan and South Korea as he hosted the leaders of the Asian countries in three-way talks at Camp David. Biden also praised the "political courage" of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in turning the page on their historical animosity. Japan and South Korea have had strained relations dating back to Japan's 1910-1945 occupation of Korea. After the summit, the White House statement read, "We do so at a time of unparalleled opportunity for our countries and our citizens, and at a hinge point of history, when geopolitical competition, the climate crisis, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, and nuclear provocations test us.”

How Did The Joseon Dynasty Reign In Korea For 500 Years? | The Mark Of Empire (Full Episode)
Lasting over five centuries, the Joseon Dynasty was the Korean Peninsula’s longest reigning dynasty, and perhaps its most influential. Singaporean Peter Lee embarks on an adventure across South Korea to learn how this modern nation was shaped by Joseon-era traditions and milestones. Along the way, he meets a fashion designer reviving traditional costumes for the social media generation, tests his Korean language skills in a classroom, and joins in on a pop band’s rehearsal that takes inspiration from Pansori, traditional musical storytelling.

In 108 BCE, the Han Dynasty invaded the kingdom and installed four commanderies in northern Korea. Three of the commanderies fell within a few decades, except the Lelang Commandery.
The Three Kingdoms of Korea comprises Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. In the early 6th century, Silla’s power extended across the Korean Peninsula.
By the 640s, Silla allied with the Tang dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo, unifying the central and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula into Unified Silla. Meanwhile, the northern part was under the control of Balhae, founded by King Go.
In 918, Goryeo was founded as the successor of Goguryeo, gradually unifying most of the Korean peninsula.
Following the Mongol invasions of Korea from 1230 to 1270, Goryeo existed as a vassal state and compulsory ally of the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty in China.
After a coup, General Yi Seong-gye overthrew the Goryeo dynasty and, in 1392, established the Joseon dynasty.
From 1592 to 1598, Joseon suffered from the great destruction of the Japanese invasions.
In the 19th century, Joseon adopted a harsh isolationist policy, for which it became known as the “Hermit Kingdom.” However, Joseon was soon forced to open its borders, leading to an era of Japanese imperial rule.
In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897–1910). In 1910, Japan formally annexed Korean Empire which was then officially named Chōsen.
After the end of World War II with the unconditional surrender of Japan, in 1945, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation.
The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two sovereign states, North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea.
In 1950, the Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea and ended without a formalized peace treaty. The Korean Peninsula remained divided by the Korean Demilitarized Zone up to the present day.
In 2018, the Panmunjom Declaration was signed between the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, and the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, announcing that they would work to officially end the Korean long-lasting conflict.
Is there any chance that North Korea and South Korea will be reunified into a single Korean sovereign state?

BAKU - Korea’s long and troubled history is largely defined by its geographic position between larger powers. The struggle to find a balance between Japan and China repeatedly facilitated a tug of war that enabled internal division and invited foreign intervention in the Korean Peninsula.

ABOUT "THE MARK OF EMPIRE: KINGDOMS OF THE EAST":
How do legacies of the past shape some of Asia’s most modern nations today? Singaporean scholar and curator Peter Lee travels to Japan and South Korea to seek out epic legends and vibrant traditions of four distinct nations and peoples in East Asia.
He embarks on a journey of adventure and discovery as he learns more about the mighty Tokugawa Shogun during Edo-period Japan. Up north in Hokkaido, he goes on a search for wild bears in their legendary natural landscapes. And as he makes his way down south, Peter traces the history of the small but vibrant Ryukyu Kingdom that emerged 600 years ago. In neighbouring South Korea, Peter meets the Korean musicians reviving Joseon-era music into radio-worthy pop, and discovers how much of the nation’s cultural footprint is shaped by this legendary period in Korean history.
