중국어선 단속 함정 향해 돌진…총탄 200발 발사하자 도주
Officials say the Coast Guard fired around 200 gunshots to chase off dozens of Chinese boats fishing illegally in South Korean waters off the west coast earlier this week.
Some 44 Chinese boats are said to have violated South Korea's exclusive economic zone about 100 kilometers off the southwest island of Gageodo Tuesday at dawn.
Despite a warning broadcast, the boats, armed with wires and steel spears sailed toward a South Korean Coast Guard patrol boat.
Just after 9 a.m., the Coast Guard fired some 200 shots with K2 rifles, M-60 machine guns and shotguns.
The boats fled about five hours after that.

Three Chinese fishermen jailed for violence against Korea Coast Guard officers
Three Chinese fishermen have been jailed for acts of violence against Korea Coast Guard officers who were conducting a crackdown on illegal fishing in Korean waters.
During the crackdown operation on Friday, the Korea Coast Guard officers reportedly encountered fierce resistance from the Chinese fishermen, who tried to strangle the Korean officers and threatened them with knives.
The captain of the Chinese boat was killed following a scuffle during the same raid, and sixteen other crewmen are being investigated for instigating violence during the incident.
There have been several clashes between the Korea Coast Guard and Chinese fishing boats.
In 2013, the Korea Coast Guard arrested roughly 183 Chinese fishermen for illegal fishing in the West Sea.

The Korean Coast Guard says it's looking at charging the operators of a Chinese fishing boat with attempted murder, after they attacked members of the coast guard on the open seas.
The Chinese fishermen are still at large, but they're wanted for intentionally crashing their 100-ton vessel into a comparatively tiny Coast Guard speed boat last Friday in the West Sea... as officers attempted to stop them for fishing illegally.
One coast guard officer dove into the water before the speedboat sunk and was soon rescued unhurt,... but he could've been killed if he wasn't so quick.
"When they attacked us with their 10-meter boat, I thought that means they probably wouldn't care if they killed someone. Or they might have even wanted to kill."
The South Korean government has made a formal request to the Chinese government to search for the attackers and their vessel.
The number of Chinese boats illegally fishing within South Korea's exclusive economic zone has risen in recent years.
More than 200 boats a day appeared in the West Sea in June.
After a lull of a couple months, they sprang back into action in September for blue crab season, with an average of 100 boats spotted a day.
"Chinese boats always have been around, and they continue to fish illegally in our waters. But what worries me is how all of a sudden there are so many of them."
The Korean Coast Guard vowed last month to dispatch more boats to guard the area around the Han River estuary, near the border between South and North Korea... in a bid to rein in the poachers.
But some have called for even tighter controls. Other countries including Indonesia, Argentina and Russia are rooting out illegal fishing by sinking the trespassers.
The Korean Coast Guard responded to those calls on Sunday, saying they'll consider using weapons.

Ko You-me has become the first female captain in the Korea Coast Guard's 60-year history.
When she takes the helm next week, she will be the commanding officer of a fleet that patrols the Dokdo islets.
Lee Ji-yoon tells us more. Ko You-me took another leap forward for women in Korea by becoming the first female captain of the Korea Coast Guard.
The 34-year-old has quickly worked her way up through the ranks since being hired as a maritime police officer in 2002.
Just a year later, she became the first policewoman to work aboard a patrol ship... and she then earned three promotions in the past decade that elevated her to the position of captain.
Her promotion is significant because it's the highest rank any female coast guard officer has ever held.
On Monday, she took command of Patrol Boat 1513 in the East Sea, which is one of two boats that patrols the Dokdo islets.
"I will try my best to bring everyone together aboard the boat and guard our Dokdo islets and the East Sea."
Ko is one of only FOUR women out of the 40 police officers aboard Patrol Boat 1513.
One of her crewmates, Policewoman Chang Ah-yeon , says Ko is playing a big role in changing the perception, especially among men, of women coast guard officers and what they're capable of.
"There are very few female coast guards in Korea. I hope she will become a great role model for us as a captain."
As Ko prepares for her first assignment as a captain next Tuesday, she says she hopes to one day become the captain of the Sambong, the heaviest in its class in the Korea Coast Guard that is in charge of guarding the Dokdo islets.
