The busy signal has become less common in the past decade due to the prevalence of call waiting and voice mail.
Reasons for a busy signal
An otherwise unspecified busy signal indicates that the called number is occupied:
The called number is talking with another caller on the phone
The number is calling out,
Someone else has called the number or is calling the number at the same time,
The other line was left off-hook,
It is otherwise unavailable
The standard busy signal sometimes occurs (sometimes with an intercept message played over the busy) at the end of a call to indicate the other party has hung up, but mostly the Off-hook tone is used.
Reorder tone
A reorder tone, sometimes called a fast busy signal, indicates that no transmission path to the called number is available. This is usually because the Inter-LATA trunk is busy at the time of the call. Usually, this clears in a few seconds, if one redials.
Glendale Goshia Gordon (born 24 January 1982), better known by his stage name Busy Signal, is a Jamaicandancehallreggae artist.
Biography
Gordon was born in Saint Ann Parish, living in areas in West and East Kingston such as Tivoli Gardens, Papine, and Spanish Town. He is a past student of Brown's Town Comprehensive High School. Known as one of the artists leading the contemporary dancehall movement, Busy Signal has been a large part of the scene since 2003. His first hit single, "Step Out", was one of the most popular dancehall songs in 2005. A music video for "Step Out" was released shortly afterwards.
He was nicknamed Busy Signal by his friends because of the fact that he is constantly busy. His hit tracks for 2007/2008 were "Nah Go A Jail Again", "Smoke Some High Grade", "Tic Toc" and the track entitled "Unknown Number" has made tremendous airplay and dancehall reviews especially in the Caribbean and the US. He has released a hit dancehall album entitled Step Out.
On 22 September 2008, Busy Signal released his second studio album titled Loaded, a 15 track compilation on VP Records of well known dancehall hits such as "Jail", "Whine Pon Di Edge", "These Are the Days", among others, as well as never-heard-before exclusive tracks such as "People So Evil" and "Hustle Hard".
He was by Bletchingly, later a Leading sire in Australia, his dam, Ada Hunter (GER) was by Andrea Mantegna (FR). Ada Hunter was the dam of nine foals, but Private Thoughts (a brother to Kingston Town) was her only other stakes winner. She was later exported to the United States. Kingston Town was bred by David Hains, who sold a share in him to G. Monsborough and his wife after the horse failed to reach his reserve as a yearling.
Racing record
He was trained throughout his career by Tommy Smith and ridden in 25 of his 30 wins by Malcolm Johnston. Kingston Town made his debut as a two-year-old, and, in his only start as a colt, ran last, but returned as a gelding in the final weeks of the season to win the Round Table Handicap at Rosehill at odds of 33/1. This was the beginning of a six-race winning run, which culminated in his first Group One win, the Spring Champion Stakes. Sent to Melbourne, the 'Sydney Champion', as he was dubbed, could only finish third, fourth, and second, respectively, in the Caulfield Guineas, the Caulfield Cup, and the Victoria Derby. The pattern of consistent success in Sydney and mixed fortunes in Melbourne would be repeated throughout his career: Kingston Town won 21 races from as many starts in Sydney between June 1979 and August 1982, interspersed with four trips to Melbourne, where he won five of his 13 starts.
In June 2007, the copyright holders of the song, Sparta Florida Music Group, started legal action against Paris Hilton and Warner Chappell Music for plagiarism due to alleged similarities between "Kingston Town" and Hilton's song "Stars Are Blind". It was wrongly stated that UB40 was the suing party, which the band later confirmed as being incorrect on their website.
In France, the cover by UB40 peaked at #1 for three weeks from October 20 to November 3, 1990. It remained on the chart for 25 weeks, and was certified Gold disc by SNEP in 1991. Infodisc Website estimates it is the 426th best selling single of all time in France with 581,000 copies sold.
The song was also covered by Jamaican group The Mighty Red.

Due to the overwhelming response from fans and industry alike, Busy Signal's benchmark album Reggae Music Again will be available digitally and in stores throughout the Caribbean on April 10. The U.S. in-store release date remains on April 24. This forthcoming album on VP Records shows the dancehall artist in a new light as he pays homage to his roots with a full set of traditional reggae songs.
Better known for his sharp-spitting rhymes on hardcore dancehall hits like "Tic Toc" (remixed by M.I.A. and Rye Rye) and "Wine Pon De Edge," Busy Signal emerges as a charismatic roots reggae artist. The intricate, multi-layered one-drop rhythms heard on Reggae Music Again werecreated by some of Jamaica's most acclaimed musicians (Kirk Bennette, Aeion Hoilette, Lamont Savory, Kevon Webster, Robbie Lyn and Dean Fraser), and recorded live at Kingston's legendary Tuff Gong studios.
Even though this is a stark departure from the sequenced beats that have dominated most of Busy's previous material, it is not the first time fans will embrace his singing. In 2011, Busy covered the classic country song "The Gambler," originally sung by Kenny Rogers for the Reggae's Gone Country compilation, and his ballad-like renditions of the 1985 Commodores' hit "Night Shift" and Phil Collin's "One More Night" off his last album D.O.B. were well-received and showed his versatility as an artist. All these songs were catalysts and motivation for his traditional approach heard on Reggae Music Again.
"Being a Jamaican, I feel like it is my duty to highlight and contribute to reggae music, and with the encouragement of my management and musicians who played on this record, it all came together," states Busy. "This album is like a renaissance for me, a rebirth - reggae style," he adds.
In addition to the full-length album, VP Records will release a vinyl companion piece, entitled REGGAE Music Dubb'n Again, available April 17, special for Record Store Day on April 21. The exclusive LP will feature extended dub mixes for six of the album's songs, which are all mixed and engineered by Shane Brown and his legendary father Errol Brown.
