The Kings of Connacht were rulers of the cóiced (variously translated as portion, fifth, province) of Connacht, which lies west of the River Shannon, Ireland. However, the name only became applied to it in the early medieval era, being named after The Connachta.
The old name for the province was Cóiced Ol nEchmacht (the fifth of the Ol nEchmacht). Ptolemy's map of c. 150 AD does in fact list a people called the Nagnatae as living in the west of Ireland. Some are of the opinion that Ptolemy's Map of Ireland may be based on cartography carried out as much as five hundred years before his time.
Connacht or Connaught/ˈkɒnəkt/ (Irish:Connacht or Cúige Chonnacht) is one of the provinces of Ireland, situated in the west of the country. Up to the 9th century it consisted of several independent major kingdoms (Lúighne, Uí Maine, and Iarthar Connacht). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Ai dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair.
At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster. The Kingdom of Connacht collapsed in the 1230s because of civil war within the royal dynasty, which enabled widespread Norman settlement under Richard Mór de Burgh, 1st Baron of Connaught.
The province of Connacht has the greatest number of Irish language speakers at between 5–10% (40,000–55,000) of the population. There are Gaeltacht areas in Counties Galway and Mayo.

The Irish Rover - The Kings of Connaught (Live)
Hi all! We're finally back to you with some new music! Here is a track recorded at our first appearance since 2019 - A special concert we hosted on 23rd Dec 2022 at the Mall Theatre in Tuam, Co.Galway.
'The Irish Rover' is an Irish folk song about a magnificent though improbable sailing ship that reaches an unfortunate end. This great ballad is said to have been written by J.M. Crofts, however, many songwriters have claimed to play a part in the writing of it!
A huge thank you to Ryan McMahon Lynch (RML Media) for the videography and to Dylan Connolly (KONNO Music) for recording the audio on the night. Hope you enjoy! Stay tuned for more...
