Doherty was the third son in a family of six born in Andersonstown, Belfast. He was educated at primary level at St. Theresa's Primary School and at secondary level at Glen Road Christian Brothers School (CBS). The Doherty brothers were known cyclists and sportsmen in the Andersontown area; Kieran won an AntrimGaelic football medal at minor level in 1971.
Doherty joined Fianna Éireann in 1971 and was interned by the British Government between February 1973 and November 1975. Kieran's brothers Michael and Terence were interned between 1972 and 1974.
Doherty worked as an apprentice heating engineer. His girlfriend was Geraldine Scheiss; although they never became formally engaged they became very close towards the end of his life. Before his arrest she had not known that he was in the IRA.
Kieran Doherty is an Irish writer and TV format creator based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He co-created the international TV entertainment formats Secret Fortune and Take the Money and Run as part of a creative partnership with Matthew Worthy, while working for UK independent production company Wild Rover Productions.

Secret Fortune
In 2008 Doherty and Worthy created the high-stakes quiz-show Secret Fortune.
In 2010 the UK network broadcaster BBC commissioned a nine-part series of Secret Fortune for Saturday night BBC One. This series was broadcast in February 2011 – with viewing figures reaching over 7 million. A second series was commissioned after just four episodes – and was filmed in May/June 2011.
In 2011 US network broadcaster CBS commissioned a pilot of Secret Fortune – co-produced by Wild Rover Productions and Nigel Lythgoe, who is an Executive Producer of American Idol.
Take the Money and Run
In 2007 Doherty and Worthy created the high-stakes reality show Take the Money and Run. A pilot was commissioned in by UK network broadcaster BBC in 2008.

In 1981 the people of Cavan Monaghan elected as TD a man who had never set foot in the constituency.
It was a significant gesture of resistance, solidarity and compassion as the TD elected was a young Belfast man, Kieran Doherty. Kieran was a political prisoner in the notorious H-Blocks of Long Kesh. Kieran died on hunger strike less than two months after being elected, on 2nd August 1981.
This film tells the story of Kieran's election campaign and how he would lose his life on Hunger Strike just weeks later.
