The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is Kentucky's state-funded agency charged with building and maintaining U.S. highways and Kentucky state highways, as well as regulating other transportation related issues.
The Transportation Cabinet is led by the Kentucky Secretary of Transportation, who is appointed by the governor of Kentucky. The current Secretary is Mike Hancock, who was appointed by Democratic Governor Steve Beshear.
As of October 2012, KYTC maintains 27,562.975 miles (44,358.308km) of roadways in the state.
Organization
The Transportation Cabinet is composed of four operating Departments, headed by Commissioners, and ten support offices, headed by Executive Directors. Those units are subdivided into Divisions headed by Directors.
Kentucky is known as the "Bluegrass State", a nickname based on the bluegrass found in many of its pastures due to the fertile soil. One of the major regions in Kentucky is the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky which houses two of its major cities, Louisville and Lexington. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world's longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park, the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the contiguous United States, and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River.
Kentucky (foaled 1861, died 1875), was a successful AmericanThoroughbredracehorse who won 21 of his 23 starts, including 20 consecutive wins.
He was by Lexington, who sired three colts in 1861 (out of Glencoe mares) and would each become one of the best race horses in America – Norfolk, Asteroid and Kentucky. Norfolk and Asteroid went undefeated throughout their racing careers, and one of the few horses who ever defeated Kentucky was Norfolk. Kentucky's dam was Magnolia, by the imported British champion Glencoe; Glencoe stood at John Harper's Nantura Stock Farm in Kentucky. His sire line traced back to Herod.
A rangy bay with a narrow white stripe and white off-fore pastern, Kentucky was owned by John Hunter, one of the founders of the Saratoga Race Course and co-owner (and the first chairman) of The Jockey Club.
Racing record
Probably trained by A.J. Minor (the facts are unclear), Kentucky won his only two-year-old start. At age three, racing for John Hunter, William R. Travers and George Osgood, he lost his second start in the inaugural Jersey Derby – coming in fourth to Norfolk. After that he won 20 consecutive races, including the first Travers Stakes in 1864 and the first two runnings of the Saratoga Cup at a distance of 2¼ miles. He also won the first Inaugural Stakes in four mile heats at the newly opened Jerome Park Racetrack. For three seasons (1864, 1865 and 1866), when races were two, three and four miles long, he was the undisputed champion of East Coast racing.
During the Civil War, Thad Goodwin (Charles Waldron) of Elmtree Farm, a local horse breeder resists Capt. John Dillon (Douglass Dumbrille) and a company of Union soldiers confiscating his prize horses. He is killed by Dillon and his youngest son Peter (Bobs Watson) cries at the soldiers riding away with the horses.
75 years later, in 1938, Peter (Walter Brennan) now a crotchety old man, still resides on Elmtree Farm and raises horses with his niece Sally (Loretta Young). Dillon's grandson Jack (Richard Greene) and Sally meet, her not knowing that he was a Dillon. Peter Goodwin dies when his speculation on cotton drops. The Goodwins are forced to auction off nearly all their horses and Jack offers his services to Sally, as a trainer of their last prize horse, "Bessie's Boy", who falls ill.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says KY-8 is too expensive to fix
FORT THOMAS, Ky. (WKRC) - A stretch of Kentucky Route 8 will reopen this weekend after being shuttered because of landslides. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they want to limit the road to local traffic because of ongoing issues with it.
The problem with the section of Route 8 is two-fold. There are the landslides from above, but there is also the erosion from below. Because the Ohio River runs so close to this road, it's creating cracks in the pavement and it also causes the road to shift, which makes it very dangerous to drive on.

"We really don't want any through traffic on that road any longer,” said Mike Bezold with the KTC.
Bezold has worked at the KTC for 20 years. He says the section of Route 8 in Fort Thomas has always been problematic.
"It's just getting worse and worse over time as the Ohio River slowly erodes the toe at the slope there 'cause it's the whole slope, not just the road,” said Bezold. “It's the whole slope all the way to the top of the hill that's coming down."
The transportation cabinet has even changed the designation of the road to encourage drivers to use alternate routes. Local drivers are all too familiar with the bumpy ride.
“I just think it needs to be limited,” said driver Tony Baker. “It's just too dangerous for people who don't know what they're getting into because if you're not on your toes, it can be very dangerous."
Limiting the road is exactly what the transportation cabinet is trying to do. They want to lower the speed limit and restrict the road to local traffic only.
“Only the people that live there or have a destination within that area to travel that road, we really don't want through traffic on that road any longer,” said Bezold.
Bezold says a traffic study shows it would cost $50 million to get the road into a passable condition. With just 2,000 daily drivers, it’s not at the top of the priority list.
“With all the growth we've had and continue to have in this area, it's tough to find that type of money for that type of project,” said Bezold.
There have also been a number of fatal crashes over the years on the stretch of Kentucky Route 8 in Fort Thomas.
