McKellar was a native of Dallas County, Alabama and was graduated from the University of Alabama in 1891 and its law school in 1892. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and was admitted to the bar the same year. McKellar was first elected to the House in a special election in November 1911 to succeed George W. Gordon in the 10th Congressional District, which included Memphis. He won the seat in his own right in 1912 and was reelected in 1914 serving until his election to the United States Senate.
He frequently toured the USA and Canada 1959-1977 with other Scottish entertainers such as Helen McArthur, often appearing in small local venues.
From 1957 he starred each year in innovative pantomimes by Howard & Wyndham Ltd notably at their Alhambra Theatre Glasgow. For a decade from 1960 he starred as Jamie in the new pantomimes devised around him, starting with A Wish For Jamie, followed by A Love For Jamie, which ran at the Alhambra in each of five years, accompanied by Rikki Fulton, and moved after to Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Newcastle. He described these years as the most fulfilling of his stage life outside his international recording career.
MY LOVE IS LIKE A RED, RED ROSE - Kenneth McKellar
An authentic rendering of this classic Scottish song set to a poem by Robert Burns and sung by Kenneth McKellar. This much-admired artist was trained at The Royal College of Music in London and subsequently sang with the great Carl Rosa Opera Company and gave concerts of Lieder, operatic arias, and classic songs with the odd folksong thrown in.
The recording is the original Decca version issued in 1960. Enjoy.

[Chorus] The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home to me The Northern Lights of Aberdeen Are what I long to see I’ve been a wanderer all of my life Any many a sight I've seen God speed the day when I'm on my way To my home in Aberdeen When I was a lad, a tiny wee lad My mother said to me Come see the Northern Lights my boy They're bright as they can be She called them the heavenly dancers Merry dancers in the sky I'll never forget, that wonderful sight They made the heavens bright The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home to me The Northern Lights of Aberdeen Are what I long to see I’ve been a wanderer all of my life Any many a sight I've seen God speed the day when I'm on my way To my home in Aberdeen God speed the day when I'm on my way
