Kelly Reichardt on First Cow and Filmmaking | NYFF57
Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Certain Women) once again trains her perceptive and patient eye on the Pacific Northwest, this time evoking an authentically hardscrabble early 19th-century way of life in First Cow, which made its New York premiere in NYFF’s Main Slate. NYFF Director Kent Jones joined Reichardt as she discussed this new film, in which she again shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America.
The film is a Main Slate selection at the 57th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 – Sunday, October 13.

The Cinema of Kelly Reichardt
“The lies are in the dialogue, the truth is in the visuals.”
Kelly Reichardt
To celebrate the release of FIRST COW, we commissioned a visual essay spotlighting Kelly Reichardt's incredible work thus far.
Written, directed and edited by Chrystel Oloukoï, this short form essay explores: "Reichardt's slow, sensuous camera as an attainment to the reverberations of the long disaster of settler-colonialism, in its socio-economic, environmental and metaphysical dimensions, at the micro scale of the quotidian of primarily white characters. Slowness is the melancholic mood of a neoliberal moment charged with suspended and festering aspirations, disillusioned with the linear telos of big plans and big narratives, but still, mourning them.
As she undermines cinematic genres foundational to national...

About the film: In the 19th century, not only fur trappers venture into the wilds of Oregon, but also a taciturn cook and a Chinese man who turn out to be able entrepreneurs. An inventive tribute by a great director to a different notion of the "frontier".

As she undermines cinematic genres foundational to national mythologies, her films gesture at alternative ethics of relation in a disenchanted world."

Following the New York premiere of First Cow at the 57th New York Film Festival, we sat down with director Kelly Reichardt to discuss her perceptive 19-century-set tale of friendship. She discussed the specific setting of the film, rethinking the idea of the western, and her wide-ranging influences, including Winslow Homer, Frederic Remington, Ugetsu, and more.
The film is a Main Slate selection at the 57th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 – Sunday, October 13. Tickets are available for the second screening on October 3: https://filmlinc.org/firstcow
Kelly Reichardt once again trains her perceptive and patient eye on the Pacific Northwest, this time evoking an authentically hardscrabble early 19th-century way of life. A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow. From this simple premise Reichardt constructs an interrogation of foundational Americana that recalls her earlier triumph Old Joy in its sensitive depiction of male friendship, yet is driven by a mounting suspense all its own. Reichardt shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America. An A24 release.
A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence.
Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies.
