Hartman was born near Pennsylvania's capital, Harrisburg, in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County. He joined his first band, The Legends, at the age of 13. His brother Dave was also a member of the band. He played keyboards and wrote much of the band's music, but despite the release of a number of recordings, none turned out to be hits. He subsequently spent a period of time backing the Johnny Winter Band. He then joined the Edgar Winter Group (Edgar Winter was Johnny Winter's younger brother), where he played bass, wrote or co-wrote many of their songs, and sang on three of their albums. He wrote and sang the band's second biggest pop hit, "Free Ride", in 1972. The ballad "Autumn" on Edgar's LP "They Only Come Out At Night" was a regional radio hit in New England. Upon launching a solo career in 1976, he released a promotional album titled Who Is Dan Hartman and Why Is Everyone Saying Wonderful Things About Him?. It was a compilation disc including songs from Johnny Winter and the Edgar Winter Group. His second release, Images, was his first true album and featured ex-Edgar Winter Group members Edgar Winter, Ronnie Montrose and Rick Derringer and guests Clarence Clemons and Randy Brecker.
"Keep the Fire Burnin'" is a song by American musician-singer-songwriter Dan Hartman starring Loleatta Holloway, released as the lead single in 1994 from his posthumous album Keep The Fire Burnin'. The album largely featured remixes of Hartman's previous hits.
Background
One of Hartman's final compositions, "Keep the Fire Burnin'" was written and produced by Hartman. Following the release of his 1989 instrumental album New Green Clear Blue, Hartman turned once again to producing and writing, mainly for others. By 1993, Hartman began to record a new album of contemporary pop and dance music. While in the studio during 1993, he noted that "So many things have changed in terms of social and political issues, as well as the need for love and personal relationships. All of these things are the reasons why writing and recording new material is most meaningful to me." In the end, a total of two songs were completed; "Keep the Fire Burnin'" and "The Love in Your Eyes". The single was released posthumously after Hartman's death on March 22, 1994, from an AIDS-related brain tumor. Released in Europe, the single was not initially successful, but in April 1995 it managed to peak at #49 in the UK, lasting within the Top 100 for a single week.
"Keep the Fire Burnin" is the title of a 1982 song by REO Speedwagon from their 1982 album Good Trouble. This single was the only track from the Good Trouble album to make the top ten on the pop charts, cresting at number seven. It is also the only tune from the album to feature Kevin Cronin on keyboards (piano), which, although primarily the band's lead singer and acoustic/rhythm guitarist, he had begun using (in the studio) on the You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish album.
This is the only song from the band's Good Trouble album to have been performed live following its supporting tour in 1983. Despite that fact, however, it is still a significant rarity in the band's setlists that has only been performed a handful of times over the last 30 years. In addition, it is also for unknown reasons the only one of the band's major hit singles that was not included on their compilation album The Hits.

It was his first album since 1989's New Green Clear Blue, and was released posthumously in 1994, following his death earlier in the year. Dan Hartman - Relight my fire
Help me escape this feeling of insecurity,
I need you so much, but I don't think you really need me.
But if we all stand up in the name of love,
And state the case of what we're dreaming of,
I've got to say I only dream of you,
But like a thief in the night you took away the love that I knew.
Relight my fire,
Your love is my only desire.
Relight my fire,
'cos I need your love.
Turn back the times till the days when our love was new.
(Do you remember?)
No matter what was happening I was there with you.
But if we all stand up for what we believe,
And maybe live within our possibilities,
The world would be wild for the dream,
So baby, don't turn away,
Listen to what I got to say.
Relight my fire,
Your love is my only desire.
