The river is about 69 miles (111km) in length. It originates from East Brimfield Lake and ponds northwest of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, flows generally southeast and south through Connecticut (Putnam, Danielson, Plainfield, Canterbury and Jewett City), the river joins Aspinook pond which begins in Canterbury and ends in Jewett City. The river then continues to the Shetucket River northeast of Norwich. That river flows from there into the Thames River and drains into the Long Island Sound. It is dammed in its upper reaches at East Brimfield Dam, Westville Dam, and West Thompson Dam all for flood control, as well as numerous mill dams which powered mills along the river's course. Some of these still provide hydroelectric power today.

Quinebaug River Canoe Trail
The Quinebaug River Water Trail winds through the woods, ponds and nature preserves of southern Worcester County into Connecticut. An existing stretch of trail has recently been expanded by 35 miles for a total of 45 miles of peaceful paddling.
"There's a surprisingly remote feeling along the trail," says Lois Bruinooge, deputy executive director of the Last Green Valley, a nonprofit conservation and advocacy group that has helped coordinate the many other organizations and municipalities working on the trail project. "You can paddle for miles and miles and not see any houses or signs of civilization, just lots of wildlife and nature. It's an amazing resource," she said.
But it wasn't always that way.

Let's go sit down by the river Me and my best friend I see tents and smoke in the distance I see acres of lands between me and fear We're walking down towards the river Me and my best friend And as I dip myself into the water Free myself of all that is tense For these moments, I digress You know You know You know just where to find me You know You know
