James Kern "Kay" Kyser (June 18, 1905 – July 23, 1985) was an American bandleader and radio personality of the 1930s and 1940s.
Early years
Kay Kyser was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the son of pharmacists Paul Bynum Kyser and Emily Royster (Howell) Kyser. Journalist and newspaper editor Vermont C. Royster was his cousin. Kyser graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was also senior class president. Because of his popularity and enthusiasm as a cheerleader, he was invited by Hal Kemp to take over as bandleader when Kemp ventured north to further his career. He began taking clarinet lessons but was better as an entertaining announcer than a musician. He adopted the initial of his middle name as part of his stage name, for its alliterative effect.
Long before his national success, Kyser recorded two sessions for Victor in the late 1920s (Camden, NJ in November, 1928 and Chicago in early 1929). These were issued on Victor's V-40000 series devoted to country music and regional dance bands.

1948 HITS ARCHIVE: On A Slow Boat To China - Kay Kyser (Harry Babbitt & Gloria Wood, vocal)
On A Slow Boat To China (Loesser) by Kay Kyser & his Orchestra, vocal by Harry Babbitt and Gloria Wood
Following up Kyser’s chart-topping “Woody Woodpecker” was this winning million-seller from the pen of Frank Loesser. You’ll note that it effectively utilized the same arrangement structure that had proved so successful for Jimmy Dorsey with his Bob & Helen hits of “Green Eyes” “Tangerine” and “Amapola.” It also turned out to be the final national hit for ‘The Ol’ Professor’ prior to his retirement from the band-leading grind. Kyser’s “Slow Boat” cruised right behind Dinah Shore’s “Buttons And Bows” for a seven-week run at #2 on the juke box charts. Eddy Howard, Freddy Martin and Benny Goodman also released top-10 versions of the song.

Praise The Lord & Pass The Ammunition - Kay Kyser
The 1943 version by Kay Kyser and His Orchestra had reached number 1. A portion of the tune is sung while in the Superman cartoon "Jungle Drums" Hitler bows his head from news that Allied forces cut off a major assault of German U-boats. Loesser donated his royalties for sale of the song to the Navy Relief Society.
