Strauss - Kathleen Battle - Frühlingsstimmen - Voices of Spring
Beautiful opera singer Kathleen Battle singing wonderfully the waltz "Voices of Spring" by Johann Strauss II written in 1882. This was in 1987 in Vienna. Conductor is Herbert von Karajan.
"Frühlingsstimmen"
Die Lerche in blaue Höh entschwebt,
der Tauwind weht so lau;
sein wonniger milder Hauch belebt
und küßt das Feld, die Au.
Der Frühling in holder Pracht erwacht,

alles Leid, entflohn ist es weit!
Schmerz wird milder, frohe Bilder,
Glaub an Glück kehrt zurück;
Sonnenschein, ah dringt nun ein,
ah, alles lacht, ach, ach, erwacht!
Da strömt auch der Liederquell,
der zu lang schon schien zu schweigen;
klingen hört dort wieder rein und hell
süße Stimmen aus den Zweigen!

Learning to Construct and Reason with a Large Knowledge Base of Extracted Information
Carnegie Mellon University's "Never Ending Language Learner" (NELL) has been running for over three years, and has automatically extracted from the web millions of facts concerning hundreds of thousands of entities and thousands of concepts. NELL works by coupling together many interrelated large-scale semi-supervised learning problems. In this talk I will discuss some of the technical problems we encountered in building NELL, and some of the issues involved in reasoning with this sort of large, diverse, and imperfect knowledge base. This is joint work with Tom Mitchell, Ni Lao, William Wang, and many other colleagues.

Using historic photos from Carnegie’s archives he explored the atom...

SUMMARY
=======
Andrew Carnegie ( kar-NAY-gee, but commonly KAR-nə-ghee or kar-NEG-ee; November 25, 1835 – August 11, 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist.
Carnegie led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and is often identified as one of the richest people (and richest Americans). He became a leading philanthropist in the United States and in the British Empire. During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away about $350 million to charities, foundations, and universities—almost 90 percent of his fortune. His 1889 article proclaiming "The Gospel of Wealth" called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, and stimulated a wave of philanthropy.
Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1848. Carnegie started work as a telegrapher, and by the 1860s had investments in railroads, railroad sleeping cars, bridges, and oil derricks. He accumulated further wealth as a bond salesman, raising money for American enterprise in Europe. He built Pittsburgh's Carnegie Steel Company, which he sold to J. P. Morgan in 1901 for $303,450,000. It became the U.S. Steel Corporation. After selling Carnegie Steel, he surpassed John D. Rockefeller as the richest American for the next couple of years.
Carnegie devoted the remainder of his life to large-scale philanthropy, with special emphasis on local libraries, world peace, education, and scientific research. With the fortune he made from business, he built Carnegie Hall in New York, NY, and the Peace Palace and founded the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Carnegie Institution for Science, Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, Carnegie Hero Fund, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, among others.

Shaun Hardy, librarian at Carnegie Science, gave a lecture titled "From Outpost to Icon: A Century of Science at Broad Branch Road" on Thursday, 24 September 2015, in the Greenewalt Lecture Hall as part of Carnegie's Neighborhood Lecture Series.
How did a leafy tract on the rural fringe of Washington a century ago become home to a world-class think tank for scientific research? It was an evening of history and science as Hardy recounted the fascinating story of the Broad Branch Road campus – from its inception in 1914 as a “mission control center” for magnetic survey expeditions and sailing ships that crisscrossed the globe to its present role as an interdisciplinary research center for the Earth and planetary sciences.
Using historic photos from Carnegie’s archives he explored the atom-smashers, radio telescopes, and other cutting-edge facilities erected “on the hill” over the past 100 years. He also highlighted some of the most significant breakthroughs by DTM and Geophysical Laboratory scientists, including the discovery of dark matter in the universe and top-secret research that helped shorten World War II.

Founders' Day Celebration Honoring
Charles Leslie's on his 80th Birthday
The first annual Founders' Day Celebration is to honor the accomplishments of Co-Founders, Fritz Lohman (1922-2009) and Charles Leslie on his 80th birthday. They are recognized them for creating the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation which has been supporting the LGBTQ art community for more than 40 years.
Michael Barimo is per Wikipedia, "Raised in Winter Park, Florida, Michael began his career as a singer and whistler as a child, performing with a boys' choir and touring as Amahl in Gian Carlo Menotti's one act opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. When he was three years old his aunt gave him a pet canary that supposedly inspired him to whistle.[1] In the first grade, Michael was awarded "best whistler" of his class, foreshadowing what would come in his musical career. At the age of 11, Michael appeared on the Nickelodeon show Figure It Out and whistled an aria from Faust.
Michael won several of the national whistling competitions held by the IWC[disambiguation needed] in Louisburg, North Carolina as a teen [2]. Upon winning the grand title of World Champion at the Millennium Championship of Musical Whistling in Edmonton,
Alberta in 1999, he began performing around the world, whistling operatic arias, particularly those with fast coloratura. His most well known whistled arias are: The Vengeance Aria (Mozart) The Jewel Song (Gounod) and Mercè Dilette Amiche (Verdi).
Michael Barimo attended Columbia College of Columbia University in New York City from 2002 to 2006, graduating with two B.A.'s in Italian Literature and Anthropology. He won the 2002 Sergio Franchi scholarship from National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) and performed at galas in D.C. and Connecticut. On March 30, 2003, while a freshman at Columbia, Michael appeared as the musical guest on the Late Show with David Letterman. [3]
Michael has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall with the IBLA Foundation and was presented the Vincenzo Bellini award.[4], he was presented with an award by the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 and performed at their annual gala held at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. On November 30, 2007, Michael performed a one-man concert for the Italian Legion of Merit. On November 11, 2008, he performed for Ten O'clock Classics [5] at their gala at the Russian Tea Room in New York. In March 2008 he performed for the Ten O'Clock Classics at The Cutting Room in New York City [6]."
