Karyes (Greek:Καρυές, before 1930: Αράχωβα - Arachova) is a village and a former community in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Sparti, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located roughly midway between Tripoli and Sparti. Population 926 (2001).
History
Caryae or Karyai (Ancient Greek: Καρυαί) was a town in ancient Laconia, near the border with Arcadia. It was situated on the road from Tegea to Sparta. Caryae had a sanctuary of Artemis, where the Lacedaemonian maidens held chorus dances. The caryatids, sculpted female figures used in architecture, were probably named after these maidens from Caryae. The modern village Karyes was named after this ancient town.
Karyes (Greek:Καρυές) is a settlement in Mount Athos. It is the seat of the clerical and secular administration of the Athonite monastic state. The 2001 Greek census reported a population of 233 inhabitants. It is the largest settlement in Mount Athos.
The major church at Karyes is the Protaton, which is the church of the Protos, or president of the monastic community.
History
Serbian Bishop Saint Sava built a church and cell (kelia) at Karyes, where he stayed for some years, becoming a Hieromonk, then an Archimandrite in 1201. He wrote the Karyes Typicon during his stay there, a marble inscription of his work still exists. In 1219 Sava becomes the first Archbishop of Serbia.
In the year 1283, Latin Crusaders during the reign of the Byzantine EmperorMichael Paleologos, attacked Mount Athos. They tortured and hanged the Protos, and sacked the Protaton, murdering many of the monks. These monks are commemorated as martyrs by the Orthodox Church on December 5 (for those churches which follow the traditional Julian Calendar, December 5 falls on December 18 of the Gregorian Calendar).

KARYES LAKONIA GREECE - AUTUMN 2023
An evening walk through the village of Karyes Lakonia Greece during early Autumn 2023. A quiet time as most of the Summer visitors have left and the village finds its peaceful rhythm.
It is a perfect time to be in the village, with mild temperatures, fruit trees like figs, pears, walnuts, chestnuts and grapes are all in season.
Time for chopping and stacking wood ready for the coming winter and the perfect time to enjoy the autumn colours.

There are two different views for the meaning behind the caryatid maidens in the literature, the first being a maiden dancer from the village of Karyes and the second an imprisoned slave. Geographer Pausanias’ historical account from the second century AD discusses the history behind the Caryatid statues as representing dancers from Karyes. He states every year in Karyes the Lacedaemonian, virgin dancers would perform the dance of ‘caryatis’ around a statue of the goddess Artemis Caryatis at a summer festival called Karyateia. The original caryatids were dancers from Karyes but later, any female from the Laconian area who performed this dance was also called a caryatid. Pausanias also mentions a temple of Artemis located in Karyes and says that she was sacred in this area.
