STORYLINE:
Berlin residents reacted on Tuesday to the extradition of Karlheinz Schreiber, a key figure in a political party financing scandal involving former Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
The 75-year-old was extradited from Canada to Germany to face criminal charges after losing a decade-long court battle.
Monday's return of the 75-year-old former arms-industry lobbyist comes a month before a national election in which the conservative Christian Democratic Union, Kohl's party, now led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, is leading in polls.
However, it was not expected to have much impact on the September 27 vote.
Merkel became CDU leader in 2000 after strongly distancing herself from the scandal.
Schreiber landed in Munich around 9:30 a.m. (0730 GMT) on Monday, then was taken to a jail in nearby Augsburg.
On Tuesday, the Augsburg state court ordered Schreiber to be kept in custody pending his trial, finding that he is a flight risk.
Prosecutors have accused Schreiber and others of taking undeclared commissions from a deal in the early 1990s to deliver Fuchs armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia.
Schreiber, a dual German and Canadian citizen, was arrested in Canada in 1999 under a German warrant. He maintains the charges against him and his extradition from Canada are politically driven.
Schreiber allegedly gave a cash donation in 1991 to the former treasurer of Kohl's Christian Democratic Union party, Walther Leisler Kiep.
The allegation triggered a scandal that only deepened with Kohl's 1999 admission that he had personally accepted off-the-books, and therefore illegal, donations from supporters.
Kohl was Germany's chancellor from 1982 to 1998.
The party financing scandal tainted Kohl's reputation and led to a criminal investigation against the chancellor who united Germany in 1990.
However, prosecutors in Bonn closed the case in 2001 without charging Kohl after he agreed to pay a 300 thousand mark (euro) fine.
Merkel won the party leadership in 2000 after becoming one of the first in her party to break with Kohl over the scandal.
Polls show the CDU with a strong lead in polls before Germany's September 27 elections.
Court officials and prosecutors said they hoped to move forward quickly with a trial. Yet prosecutor Reinhard Nemetz said a trial was unlikely to begin before the election.

STORYLINE
A German former defence official wanted in his homeland for allegedly accepting a bribe in a party financing scandal told a French court on
Wednesday that he does not want to be extradited.
Holger Pfahls, who was arrested July 13 in Paris on an international warrant after a five-year search, contradicted an earlier written statement saying that he would agree to be extradited to Germany to answer charges.
Pfahls' lawyer, Volker Hoffman, said too much time has passed for his client to be extradited for acts he is suspected of committing as long ago as
1991.
The court set an October 20 hearing to examine the issue.
Pfahls is accused of accepting 3.8 (m) million German marks (1.94 (m) million euros, or 2.4 (m) million US dollars at today's rates) in a party financing scandal that tainted former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
He allegedly accepted the money from German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber.
Pfahls is accused of using his position as a top defence military official to ensure 36 Fuchs armoured vehicles were passed from the German military to Saudi Arabia after arms manufacturer Thyssen-Henschel failed to deliver the units on time to Saudi forces during the 1991 Gulf War.
Allegations that Schreiber gave a cash donation to the former treasurer of Kohl's Christian Democrats in 1991 triggered a scandal that deepened with Kohl's 1999 admission that he personally accepted off-the-book donations from supporters.

The cash scandal surrounding Germany former Chancellor Helmut Kohl is widen to include yet more members of his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
The SPD (Socialist Democratic Party) reacted strongly to statement of CDU party chief about donations to the party, which were not reported as donations.
The CDU party chairman, Wolfgang Schaeuble, insisted he would not resign.
Schaeuble took over the position after Kohl's 1998 electoral defeat.
He told a press conference on Tuesday that the party accepted a (US) 52-thousand dollars cash donation in 1994 from a German-Canadian businessman.
The party was not legally allowed to keep the money because the donor, Karlheinz Schreiber, did not want his name in party records.
But Schaeuble, who was the party's leader in parliament at the time, said he did nothing wrong because he simply turned the cash over to the party treasurer, then Brigitte Baumeister, who was responsible for entering it into the books.
