Jordan Peterson's Critique of the Communist Manifesto
On February, April 19, 2019, I debated Marxist philosopher Slavoj Zizek in Toronto, April 19 at the Sony Centre. I started with a critique of The Communist Manifesto, which is the central revolutionary document of the Marxist movement.
Dr. Zizek is a Slovenian philosopher and professor at the Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana, whose works on cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and, above all, for the purposes of our debate, Marxism, are world-renowned. The topic? Happiness: Marxism vs Capitalism.

In it we find Marx and Engel's rehearsal of the idea that Capital has stolen away the work of the artisan and peasant by building up factories to produce goods cheaply. The efficiency of Capital depends, then, on the wage laborers who staff the factories and how little they will accept in order to have work. This concentrates power and money in a Bourgeois class that profits from the disunity of workers (Proletarians), who only receive a subsistence wage. (Cont'd below)...

If workers unite in a class struggle against the bourgeois, using riot and strikes as weapons, they will eventually overthrow the bourgeois and replace them as a ruling class. Communists further believe in and lay out a system of reforms to transform into a classless, stateless society, thus distinguishing themselves from various flavors of Socialism, which would be content to have workers remain the ruling class after the revolution.
The Manifesto caused a huge amount of discussion for its support for a forcible overthrow of the existing politics and society. (Summary by Mark F. Smith)

In this video, we’ll take a look at the basics of what you should know about Marxism.
Marxism is a social, political, and economic philosophy. It is mostly about the battle between the working class and the ownership class and favors communism and socialism over capitalism. Marxism was first publicly formulated in 1848 in the pamphlet The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, which lays out the theory of class struggle and revolution. It inspects the effect of capitalism on labor, productivity, and economic development and argues for a worker revolution to overturn capitalism in favor of communism. Marxism hypothesizes that the struggle between social classes—specifically between the bourgeoisie, or capitalists, and the proletariat, or workers—defines economic relations in a capitalist economy and will inevitably lead to revolutionary communism.

A good article, I think, on Zizek: https://www.iep.utm.edu/zizek/#H2

The philosopher Jean Louise Cohen reads and discusses with Bernard E. Harcourt Marx’s 1844 articles "On the Jewish Question" and "Introduction to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right," in conversation with Claude Lefort's "Human Rights and Politics" (1980) for Marx 3/13 @Collumbia. In February 1844, Marx published two articles in the Deutsch-französische Jahrbücher, which he and Arnold Ruge edited in Paris: “A Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right: Introduction” and “On the Jewish Question.” The first article, Jean Hyppolite referred to as “a first communist manifesto.” The second article, famously, called for human, as opposed to merely legal or political emancipation.
Together, the two articles push the reader past the juridical remedies that Marx proposed in his 1842 articles on the thefts of wood and that we discussed at Marx 2/13. There, you will recall, Marx called for a legal framework based on a customary right for the poor. By contrast, in these two 1844 articles, Marx recognizes the thoroughgoing political nature of the struggle and turns instead to the class of workers for the realization of emancipation.
From Marx’s juridical writings, we turn in Marx 3/13 to his more political writings on the state and on the true nature of emancipation. At Marx 3/13, we will read Marx’s 1844 articles with Professor Jean Louise Cohen, the Nell and Herbert Singer Professor of Political Theory and Contemporary Civilization at Columbia University, in conversation with the political philosopher Claude Lefort’s essay “Politics and Human Rights.”
Welcome to Marx 3/13!

Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look.

“Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…”
