Kahoolawe
Kahoʻolawe (/kəˌhoʊ.əˈlɑːwiː/; Hawaiian: [kəˈhoʔoˈlɐve]) is the smallest of the eight main volcanic islands in the Hawaiian Islands. Kahoʻolawe is located about seven miles (11.2 km) southwest of Maui and also southeast of Lanai, and it is 11 miles (18 km) long by 6.0 miles (9.7 km) wide, with a total land area of 44.97 square miles (116.5 km2). The highest point on Kahoʻolawe is the crater of Lua Makika at the summit of Puʻu Moaulanui, which is about 1,477 feet (450 m) above sea level. Kahoʻolawe is relatively dry (average annual rainfall is less than 65 cm or 26 in) because the island's low elevation fails to generate much orographic precipitation from the northeastern trade winds, and Kahoolawe is located in the rain shadow of eastern Maui's 10,023 feet (3,055 m) high volcano, Haleakalā. More than one quarter of Kahoʻolawe has been eroded down to saprolitic hardpan soil.
Kahoʻolawe has always been sparsely populated, due to its lack of fresh water. During World War II, Kahoʻolawe was used as a training ground and bombing range by the Armed Forces of the United States. After decades of protests, the U.S. Navy ended live-fire training exercises on Kahoolawe in 1990, and the whole island was transferred to the jurisdiction of the state of Hawaii in 1994. The Hawaii State Legislature established the Kahoolawe Island Reserve to restore and to oversee the island and its surrounding waters. Today Kahoolawe can be used only for native Hawaiian cultural, spiritual, and subsistence purposes.

....we were walking around and there were bombs everywhere all over the place.... You can spend a whole day not seeing any ordnance remnant of UXO."
However, the *biggest part of the reserve still hasn't even been touched.
"During the cleanup a lot of the island was cleaned up but the ocean wasn't. So 100% of the ordnances that was dropped is still in there.
To protect the ocean, the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana and Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission... are working to *preserve the land…. By reducing erosion.
"We lose about 1.9 nearly 2 million tons of top soil sediment every year, annually, and it's all deposited into our near shore reef ecosystem. So that is probably the biggest challenge."
"From this point on there are bombs right under us in this ground. So how do you plant in these conditions? That's why crews have implemented techniques like this, to help with plant restoration"
Resource specialists decided to grow above the ground.... planting seeds in rock mounds like these… that capture the wind blown soil.
So far more than 400-thousand native plants have been replanted.
With a small budget and a big island to restore....
... The Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission says they use whatever is donated to them, as their next tool.
"We took sheets from four seasons wrapped them around logs that created this moisture barrier on the log. We took the latest that they were gonna throw away we use them to collect rain water to build soil up in the areas that we couldn't plant in. We try to come up with creative ways to reuse stuff which helps become sustainable and then we become sustainable."
Work to restore the spiritual aspect of the island is also essential.
"Our real thing is to clean up the archaeological sites, observe what's there and including the environment... and then do the practices, do the ceremonies that we can creat those communications with the other Gods. Kane, Kanaloa and Ku."
While progress is being made in some areas with the help of thousands of volunteers, it’s estimated that generations will pass before the island is fully restored.
"It's really important because otherwise it's going to be something that people just read and that's all and they won't understand it's just going to be a part of the history that nobody gonna get to know what was done in the past."

We took the latest that they were gonna throw away we use them to collect rain water to build soil up in the areas that we couldn't plant in. We try to come up with creative ways to reuse stuff which helps become sustainable and then we become sustainable."
Work to restore the spiritual aspect of the island is also essential.
"Our real thing is to clean up the archaeological sites, observe what's there and including the environment... and then do the practices, do the ceremonies that we can creat those communications with the other Gods. Kane, Kanaloa and Ku."
While progress is being made in some areas with the help of thousands of volunteers, it’s estimated that generations will pass before the island is fully restored.
"It's really important because otherwise it's going to be something that people just read and that's all and they won't understand it's just going to be a part of the history that nobody gonna get to know what was done in the past."

When Hawaiians first arrived on Kahoolawe around 400 A.D....
They dedicated the island to Kanaloa, the Hawaiian deity of the ocean.... and initially reffered to the island as “Kohe malamalama o Kanaloa”.

Archaeologists believe there was a large population in Hakioawa, on the northern coast facing Maui. Remnants of their village are still there today.
“One of the neat things about Kaho’olawe is we didn’t have large scale agriculture like the other islands. So a lot of the cultural artifacts are still sitting in the same place where people live, walked up walked away maybe 300 or 400 years ago.”
In fact, there were so many artifacts and historical sites, that the entire island was given a special distinction.
“… So you know like Iolani Palace you have George Washington Memorial those are individual places. There were so many of these things on Kaho’olawe they listed the whole island as a historic place so we’re on the national register.”
“You can feel the mana of all those before us that came here. It may not be kupuna but still, the oiwi and how much they cared for this land.”
At the end of the 1700’s, Kahoolawe entered a harsh evolution...
Goats were introduced, a penal colony was established, and sheep and cattle ranching took over… which led to uncontrolled grazing... causing devastating erosion.
But what was coming next, would forever change the island.

On January 4, 1976, a fleet of boats headed toward the Hawaiian island of Kaho‘olawe. The goal: take the island back from the US military for the Hawaiian people.
Since World War II, the US military had used the island for bombing practice and decimated its land. But the story of the taking of this one island was part of a bigger history of the taking of all of Hawaii. The decades-long efforts to reclaim it would help spark a movement to renew the culture and traditions of the islands — and a push for Hawaiian sovereignty.

Since the bombing ended in 1990... more than 9 million pounds of remnants have been cleared, to being restoration projects.
We now show you show you those project that the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission, are currently working on.
Kahoolawe is on the slow path toward reclamation..
But it has a long way to go after being dramatically transformed over the decades through introduced animals and military training.
"This is as far as you can get ecologically destroying the environment. You have the goats destroying the plants, you had cattle and sheep for a long time really tearing up the island...
.... then you have bombing that kind of made any restoration effort very difficult."
...And then received $400 million dollars over 10 years to clean up the island. Over that decade, the Navy cleared about 75% of the surface of the island…
"Kaho'olawe today is not the same Kahoolawe 20 years ago. 20 years ago...
....we were walking around and there were bombs everywhere all over the place.... You can spend a whole day not seeing any ordnance remnant of UXO."
However, the *biggest part of the reserve still hasn't even been touched.
"During the cleanup a lot of the island was cleaned up but the ocean wasn't. So 100% of the ordnances that was dropped is still in there.
To protect the ocean, the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana and Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission... are working to *preserve the land…. By reducing erosion.

Kahoolawe
Kahoʻolawe (/kəˌhoʊ.əˈlɑːwiː/; Hawaiian: [kəˈhoʔoˈlɐve]) is the smallest of the eight main volcanic islands in the Hawaiian Islands. Kahoʻolawe is located about seven miles (11.2 km) southwest of Maui and also southeast of Lanai, and it is 11 miles (18 km) long by 6.0 miles (9.7 km) wide, with a total land area of 44.97 square miles (116.5 km2). The highest point on Kahoʻolawe is the crater of Lua Makika at the summit of Puʻu Moaulanui, which is about 1,477 feet (450 m) above sea level. Kahoʻolawe is relatively dry (average annual rainfall is less than 65 cm or 26 in) because the island's low elevation fails to generate much orographic precipitation from the northeastern trade winds, and Kahoolawe is located in the rain shadow of eastern Maui's 10,023 feet (3,055 m) high volcano, Haleakalā. More than one quarter of Kahoʻolawe has been eroded down to saprolitic hardpan soil.
Kahoʻolawe has always been sparsely populated, due to its lack of fresh water. During World War II, Kahoʻolawe was used as a training ground and bombing range by the Armed Forces of the United States. After decades of protests, the U.S. Navy ended live-fire training exercises on Kahoolawe in 1990, and the whole island was transferred to the jurisdiction of the state of Hawaii in 1994. The Hawaii State Legislature established the Kahoolawe Island Reserve to restore and to oversee the island and its surrounding waters. Today Kahoolawe can be used only for native Hawaiian cultural, spiritual, and subsistence purposes.
