Tyler, the Creator - Answer [Official Video]
Track 6 on Wolf. Like “Inglorious”, it’s centered around his feelings on his dad not being around.
[Lyrics]
[Hook 1: Tyler]
Because when I call
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer (x4)
Because when I call
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer
[Verse 1: Tyler]
Hey Dad, it's me, um...
Oh, I'm Tyler, I think I'd be your son
Sorry, I called you the wrong name, see, my brain's splitting
Dad isn't your name, see Faggot's a little more fitting
Mom was only twenty when you ain't have any fucks to spare
You Nigerian fuck, now I'm stuck with this shitty facial hair
Also stuck with a beautiful home with a case of stairs
So you not being near fucking fire-started my damn career
But fuck it, I got Clancy, he gave me the chance to s...

Track 6 on Wolf. Like “Inglorious”, it’s centered around his feelings on his dad not being around.
[Lyrics]
[Hook 1: Tyler]
Because when I call
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer (x4)
Because when I call
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer
[Verse 1: Tyler]
Hey Dad, it's me, um...
Oh, I'm Tyler, I think I'd be your son
Sorry, I called you the wrong name, see, my brain's splitting
Dad isn't your name, see Faggot's a little more fitting
Mom was only twenty when you ain't have any fucks to spare
You Nigerian fuck, now I'm stuck with this shitty facial hair
Also stuck with a beautiful home with a case of stairs
So you not being near fucking fire-started my damn career
But fuck it, I got Clancy, he gave me the chance to see
A world I wasn't supposed to, I'm stoked that I didn't know you
But sucks you ain't give a fuck and considered a sperm donor now
The fuck is an Okonma? I'm changing my shit to Haley
And I just ain't being passive, nigga
You a fucking faggot, nigga
Got a show on Monday, guess who ain't getting no passes, nigga?
But if I ever had the chance to ask this nigga
And call him...
I hope he answer
[Hook: Tyler and (Syd)]
I hope you answer (x4)
Because when I call (When I call, baby)
I hope you pick up your phone (Please pick up)
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer
[Verse 2: Tyler]
Suck my fucking dick and swallow this case of nuts
Ace hates your guts, I'm a selfish fuck
And I ain't sharing green as if I'm facing blunts
Frank is out the closet, Hodgy's an alcoholic
Syd might be bipolar, but fuck it, I couldn't call it
Supposed to be gone til November but quickly came back in August
I left two months through September to clearly remember all this
I would like to tell my grandma, but she just nostalgia
I'll call her number
But she won't answer
[Hook: Tyler (Syd)]
I hope you answer (x4)
Because when I call (When I call, baby)
I hope you pick up your phone
(I'd like to talk to you)
I hope you answer
[Verse 3: Tyler]
You claim to hate my fucking guts
But say I'm on a island in Thailand and I was wilding
And, if I got stranded had to man up and hold my nuts
And hope that I could live off salt water and fucking coconuts
Phone ain't got no service -- this 3G is fucking worthless
Day is getting dark like the area's turning urban
You'll be fucking nervous like me inside of a church is
But, I'mma get in contact regardless, and
I hope you answer
[Outro]

🎵 Lyrics:
(Can we talk on the phone or something)
Because when I call (When I call you on the phone)
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer
I hope you answer
Yeah, I hope you answer
I hope you answer
Yeah, I hope you answer
Because when I call
I hope you pick up your phone
I'd like to talk to you
I hope you answer
[Verse 1: Tyler, The Creator]
Hey Dad, it's me, um...
Oh, I'm Tyler, I think I'd be your son
Sorry, I called you the wrong name, see, my brain's splitting
"Dad" isn't your name, see "Faggot"'s a little more fitting
Mom was only twenty when you ain't have any fucks to spare
You Nigerian fuck, now I'm stuck with this shitty facial hair
Also stuck with a beautiful home with a case of stairs
So you not being near fucking fire-started my damn career
But fuck it, I got Clancy, he gave me the chance to see
A world I wasn't supposed to, I'm stoked that I didn't know you
But sucks you ain't give a fuck and considered a sperm donor now
Fuck is an Okonma? I'm changing my shit to Haley
And I just ain't being passive, n*gga
You a fuckin' faggot, n*gga
Got a show on Monday, guess who ain't gettin' no passes, n*gga?
But if I ever had the chance to ask this n*gga
And call him
I hope he answer
[Chorus: Tyler, The Creator & (Syd)]
I hope you answer
I hope you answer
I hope you answer
Yeah, I hope you answer
Because when I call (When I call, baby)
I hope you pick up your phone (Please pick up)
I'd like to talk to you
(I hope you answer)
[Verse 2: Tyler, The Creator]
Suck my fucking dick and swallow this case of nuts
Ace hates your guts, I'm a selfish fuck
And I ain't sharing green as if I'm facing blunts
Frank is out the closet, Hodgy's an alcoholic
Syd might be bipolar, but fuck it, I couldn't call it
Supposed to be gone 'til November but quickly came back in August
I left two months through September to clearly remember all this
I would like to tell my grandma, but she just nostalgia
I'll call her number
But she won't answer
[Chorus: Tyler, The Creator & (Syd)]
I hope you answer
I hope you answer
I hope you answer
Yeah, I hope you answer
'Cause when I call (When I call, baby)
I hope you pick up your phone
(I'd like to talk to you)
I hope you answer
[Verse 3: Tyler, The Creator]
You claim to hate my fucking guts
But say I'm on a island in Thailand and I was wilding
And, if I got stranded had to man up and hold my nuts
And hope that I could live off salt water and fucking coconuts
Phone ain't got no service, this 3G is fucking worthless
Day is getting dark like the area's turning urban
You'll be fucking nervous like me inside of a Church's
But, I'ma get in contact regardless, and
I hope you answer
[Outro: Tyler, The Creator]
The last verse was about this girl, haha

"I'm a Barbie girl" but it's a three voice fugue! 🎹 🎤 - Josep Castanyer Alonso
🎹 Sheet music transcription: https://payhip.com/b/n7A96
After the overwhelming success of the Swedish ice-cream truck fugue (https://youtu.be/ZV0e7vd0mL8), it was about time to transform yet another famous tune into a fugue.
Few pop songs are as catchy as Aqua's hit "I'm a Barbie girl". Here, it becomes a three part fugue, following its traditional structure and backed with some explanatory graphics.
A fun summer project, an homage to pop music of the 90's and a way to get back into piano! 😀

Bach, "Little" Fugue in G minor, BWV 578, performed on organ by Stephen Malinowski, with an animated graphical score.
FAQ
Q: How can this be played with just two hands?
A: It can't. It's played on the organ, and one of the melodic lines is played by the feet, on a pedalboard. Here's a video showing what that's like:

Bach - The Art of Fugue BWV 1080 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society
Bach’s The Art of Fugue is shrouded in mystery. We don’t know whether Bach intended the music as material for practice or performance. The order of the 18 sections is unclear as well and we don’t know whether the piece was ever completed.
Shunske Sato made his own instrumentation for the Netherlands Bach Society. “I wanted to bring out the many colours of the work and of my ensemble. Every fugue has its own character. On the basis of the rhythm, time and chromatic lines, etc., you can determine which instrument is most suitable. I’ve studied each part very carefully, in order to decide which instruments are best to use. I wanted the whole Netherlands Bach Society to be heard, so the singers are taking part as well. They sing without words, to vowel sounds. When you introduce singers to th...

How do you (not) write a fugue?
In my first semester of tonal counterpoint class, our final assignment was to write a 4-voice fugue... so I said yOLO and wrote this meme fugue as the final assignment - with the lyrics being my revision notes from class haha. Huge shoutout to Prof. Nicole Biamonte for accepting this fugue as a valid assignment and not instantly dunking on my grades, especially with the "intentional parallel fifths" section. I later gathered 4 singers (with me playing the piano part) and played through this, huge thank you to Alice Boissinot (Soprano), Elissa Dresdner (Alto), Adam Schmidt (Tenor), and Tristan Pritham (Bass) for singing this, and Mehdi Rahimdokht, Victoria Barroso, and Matthew Souaid for the recording. It was incredible - the singers learnt and sung this fugue at this level with only 2 hour...

Bach: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 (MacGregor)
For lyricism, warmth, and narrative intelligence I don’t think this recording of The Art of Fugue has been bettered. MacGregor’s concern is always to make each piece uplifting in its own way, and to give each its distinct character: C.1 and C.14 are taken at tempi which make them sing, C.4 is given lots of intimate articulative touches, and the stretti in C.5, usually dramatic, enter with a sense of quiet repose, making the piece luminously mysterious. C.2 and C.6 – the two dotted-rhythm fugues – swing away like there’s no tomorrow: C.2 in particularly is given a kind of jazzy casualness that’s really effective. C.7’s gentle murmuring is perfect prelude to the energetic C.8. C.12, usually dead-serious, has a pompous swagger about it (particularly in the inversus), emphasized by the clashin...

This video looks at Fugues, and how they work. It considers the great fugues of Bach, as well as surveying fugue from Britten to Bernstein, Handel to Beethoven. It looks at fugal technique - the exposition, subject, answer (tonal and real answers), and also the countersubject and episodes, and the concept of fugato. It then considers a variety of techniques, including canon, augmentation, diminution, inversion, stretto, and double fugues. The video also teaches us what counterpoint it. The background music in the beginning is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and then the fugue looked at is from Book 2 of Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier.
While many people use classical music for studying, relaxing and relaxation, or sleeping, far fewer people actually enjoy listening actively. Due to the difficult state of music education, most people don't know how to follow a symphony, or how the best composers wrote and structured their works. While it has been proven that classical music can be beneficial to the mental development of babies and kids, I believe it has life enhancing qualities for all ages, and as an art form deserves to be shared, whether through outreach, or tutorials and lessons like these.
Classical music, at its best, can be richly emotional, and I believe that its emotion can be unlocked by anyone willing to follow these guides through. The principles that I will go through apply to all music, whether live in concert or on CD or Spotify, and whether you're listening to Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Brahms, Chopin, Wagner, Verdi, or Puccini, and whether listening to Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Orchestral, Choral, or Chamber music.
Many programs suggest that learning an instrument such as the piano, violin, guitar, cello, oboe, clarinet, or singing in a choir, is crucial for music appreciation. Well I think these skills, as well as learning to read sheet music and training your ear, can be extremely useful, I believe that almost anyone can learn to enjoy classical music with minimal training and music theory. Therefore, this short series will be very light on music theory, and will only use it when necessary to highlight certain forms such as sonata, rondo, and other typical forms.
While I originally got into classical music via movie scores and film composers such as Howard Shore, John Williams, and Hans Zimmer, I discovered this way of listening which has completely changed the way I approach and enjoy classical music. I hope through these videos I can share that with you.

This video looks at Fugues, and how they work. It considers the great fugues of Bach, as well as surveying fugue from Britten to Bernstein, Handel to Beethoven.
When you introduce singers to the Art of Fugue, you can hardly ignore the example of the Swingle Singers. The sung Contrapunctus 9 is intended as a tribute to their great recording."

It was incredible - the singers learnt and sung this fugue at this level with only 2 hours of rehearsal!
I also have to shoutout my two inspirations for this fugue: the first being my favorite fugue to this day, Glenn Gould's parodistic "So You Want to Write a Fugue?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHW1I8T0caI and second is Freddy Wickham's self-explanatory "Ontological Fugue" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xtbp4Esgfk. I decided to go in the direction of these two pieces, but take a step further by adding theatrics, intentional "counterpoint error" sections, and slipping in familiar quotations (Art of Fugue, Double Violin Concerto, Christmas Tunes).
The piece can be summarized in three sections - The exposition (which introduces basic fugal techniques), the middle/"development" (where errors/fugal parodies are gradually introduced in a tongue-in-cheek manner), and the "recapitulation" (where the singers break the 4th wall, address the listener, and question the philosophy of compositional aesthetics and rules... yep it gets pretty off-the-rails haha).
Overall, I wanted a piece that could be appreciated by all levels - those that do not have much familiarity with fugal writing will gain something from it, and those that are experts in fugues will enjoy the humorous parodistic subversion of counterpoint expectations. (And of course the main reason, I needed to write a fugue for a tonal counterpoint class assignment).
Please listen to this with headphones/stereo, as I've panned the voices to make it easier to distinguish the lines (Soprano/Bass to the left, Alto/Tenor to the right).
A more detailed analysis (For word count's sake, Subject/Answer/Countersubject = Sub/Ans/CS, Soprano = S, Alto = A, Tenor = T, Bass = B)
0:00 - Ridiculous 10 bar Sub. in B (this is gonna be a long exposition)
0:15 - Ans. in T, CS in B (for the sake of keeping it simple, only real answer at the 5th will be explained in the lyrics)
0:32 - Codetta/Mini-Episode/Retransition Section
0:45 - Sub. in A, CS in T
1:00 - Ans. in S, CS in A
1:17 - End of Exposition, fragments presented
1:21 - Episode: Sequence with sub. fragment that forms a canon at the 7th below (With S and B)
1:31 - Deck the Halls quote, modulation to D Maj
1:35 - Triple entry of modified sub. in A, T (augmentation), and B (technically not a true stretto)
1:42 - For a 10 bar subject, metrically starting on a weaker beat makes the harmonic rhythm a bit wack (shorter subjects can be displaced easier)
1:50 - Ans. in T, CS in A (Voice crossing frowned upon)
2:06 - Episode: Sequence with diminution of sub. fragment
2:21 - Inversion of Sub. (Parodying a Double Fugue Entry)
2:30 - Intentional Parallel Fifths
2:33 - Inv. Sub. in A, New CS in B, almost like a new double fugue exposition
2:41 - I thought it would be funny to leap while the singer complains about said leaps (though in this case, those "random leaps" in A are part of the inverted sub.)
2:50 - Inv. Sub. in S, New CS in A, but this exposition is thrown out of the window with what comes next!
3:01 - I asked myself: how far can I take the idea of stretto? This was the result! Diminution of Sub. in T and B, Diminution of inverted Sub. in S and A.
3:14 - S does augmentation/upward suspensions against the diminution stretto
3:27 - Inv. of sub. fragment (bar 3 idea) in ascending stretto
3:36 - Phrygian Cadence (Modal counterpoint reference!)
3:42 - Bach Art of Fugue in Piano (hinted by S and B lyrics previously)
3:49 - Bach Double Violin Concerto quotation
3:53 - Art of Fugue against the original subject! (Start of "recapitulation" - parodies a double fugue where one combines the two previously heard themes, but in this case it's art of fugue, literally heard a few bars ago by a random piano solo haha)
4:07 - Sub. in B, CS in A
4:23 - CS intentionally enters in the "wrong" voice (S), Sub. in T (had to be modified as some notes are out of a standard tenor's range). Final entry of the recap is skipped.
4:38 - Dominant Pedal with sub. + inverted sub. diminution in S
4:46 - Crunchy suspensions!
4:54 - Even crunchier suspensions!
5:07 - Final entry of subject head (augmented version in A), + 4-3 suspension resolving to picardy in T

C.12, usually dead-serious, has a pompous swagger about it (particularly in the inversus), emphasized by the clashing notes created by the by crossing voices and the use of staccato in the scalar passages. In the 2-keyboard version of C.13 MacGregor opts not to tripletize the semiquavers, generating lots of lovely rhythmic variety. See also the long lines of the Canon at the twelfth, the carefully shaped subject in the Canon at the tenth, and the wonderful articulation in the Canon with following voice inverted and augmented. Another feature of the playing worth mentioning is its fantastic sense of (hard to find the right words for this) harmonic movement – the sequences are uniformly beautiful.
But if there is a single quality of the playing here that’s especially arresting, it’s the narrative drama MacGregor brings to the longer fugues. C.8 is given symphonic treatment, with stark pauses, huge dynamic changes, and expressive changes in tempo. C.11 starts quiet and unmoving and stays that way for a long while, even when the second subject enters – until at 36:10 a very gradual crescendo enters, gathering in strength until at 36:41 a climax is reached and the music fades back into dreaminess again. The whole piece, taken at a relatively slow pace, feels timeless and monumental – the dense chromaticism of the last section, instead of coming across as wild, has a sense of desperation or intense sadness, even as it builds into that heart-stopping climax at 42:40 (in general MacGregor’s got a great way of building into dramatic moments: 14:30, 17:50, 23:18, and so on). And C.14, often forlorn, is now hopeful, rapt.

C.2 and C.6 – the two dotted-rhythm fugues – swing away like there’s no tomorrow: C.2 in particularly is given a kind of jazzy casualness that’s really effective. C.7’s gentle murmuring is perfect prelude to the energetic C.8.
