K-1 World MAX 2009 World Championship Tournament Final
K-1 World MAX 2009 World Championship Tournament - Final - was a martial arts event promoted by the K-1 organization. It took place on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. It was the 8th annual K-1 World Max (70kg/154lbs weight class) World Championship Final, featuring four quarter final winners of K-1 World MAX 2009 Final 8 held on July 13, 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. It was broadcast in North America on October 31 by HDNet.
K-1 began in 1993 and is a kickboxing platform and martial arts brand well-known worldwide mainly for its heavyweight division fights. On January 2012, K-1 Global Holdings Limited, a company registered in Hong Kong, acquired the rights to K-1, and is the current organizer of K-1 events worldwide.
Name
The letter K in K-1 is officially designated as a representation of words karate, kickboxing and kung fu. Nevertheless, some reports suggest that it represents the initial K found in competing disciplines such as karate, kickboxing, kung fu, kempo, kakutougi (the generic Japanese term for "combat sports"), and [tae] kwon do. Yet another theory claims that the K simply comes from kakutougi and the "1" component pertains to the single weight division (in earlier competition) and the champion's unique position. Nevertheless, the promotion held several tournaments under K-2 and K-3 banners from 1993 to 1995.
History
K-1's predecessor Seidokaikan Karate was formed in 1980 by Kazuyoshi Ishii, a former Kyokushin karate practitioner who had formed his own organization to help promote the best stand-up martial artists. Seidokaikan arranged several successful challenge events against other martial arts organizations, originally using rules based on the Kyokushin Knockdown karate rules, but gradually adapting and changing closer to kickboxing rules. In 1993, Mr. Ishii founded the K-1 organization exclusively as a kickboxing organization, closely cooperating with, but independent from Seidokaikan.
The Kistler K-1 launch vehicle was to have been a two-stage, fully reusable launch system aerospace vehicle in commercial development by Rocketplane Kistler. It was designed to accommodate a wide range of missions, including payload delivery to low Earth orbit (LEO), payload delivery to high-energy orbits with a K-1 Active Dispenser, technology demonstration flights, microgravity missions, and commercial cargo resupply, recovery, and reboost services for the International Space Station. After failing to meet financial milestones, NASA announced in October 2007 that it was terminating funding for the project.
Reusability
"The first stage of the vehicle would fly back to the launch site; the second would orbit Earth before returning. Recovery of the stages would be by parachutes and air bag."
K-1 begins at the border with Oklahoma, where it is a continuation of Oklahoma State Highway 34. It heads in a northerly direction, turning slightly to the northwest before heading directly northward again. It passes through the unincorporated community of Buttermilk, which is the only community on the route. From Buttermilk, K-1 continues northward until it terminates at an intersection with U.S. Route 160 (US-160) and U.S. Route 183 (US-183) south of Coldwater. The route length is 13.363 miles (21.506km). The entire route of K-1 is paved with partial design bituminous pavement, a type of bituminous pavement which is not designed or constructed to carry the highway's expected traffic.Annual average daily traffic values for the highway rise slowly from 600 over the southernmost 4.000 miles (6.437km) of the route to 645 over the northernmost 5.363 miles (8.631km) of the route. K-1 highway is not a part of the United States National Highway System.
