Justice, Inc. is a role-playing game designed to simulate the adventure stories in the pulp magazines of the 1930s.

It was one of the first non-superhero applications of the point-based game system that had been developed for the Champions superhero game. The generalized point system would eventually be published as the Hero System, following in the footsteps of Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing System, but preceding GURPS as a non-genre-specific game system.

Publishing History

Justice, Inc. was published in July 1984 by Hero Games, and was written by Aaron Allston, Steve Peterson and Michael Stackpole. The two-volume set included a rulebook and campaign book containing a discussion of the pulp genre, the "Empire Club" campaign setting, a timeline of real-world events of the 1920s and '30s, and several pulp adventures.

Two supplements were published:

Lands of Mystery (May 1985), a critically acclaimed sourcebook describing how to design and run "Lost World" adventures, like those found in the fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. Rider Haggard. ISBN 0-917481-60-7

Justice, Inc.

"Justice, Inc." is the first pulp magazine story to feature The Avenger. Written by Paul Ernst, it was published in the September 1, 1939 issue of "The Avenger” magazine.

Publishing history

This novel was re-published under its original title by Paperback Library on June 1, 1972.

A DC Comics title called Justice, Inc. began in (May–June 1975) and ran to issue #4 (November–December 1975). This series adapted the eponymous novel and continued with original stories which featured the Avenger and which took place during the time the original Avenger novels were released. Jack Kirby provided the artwork for issues #2–4. A two-issue limited series published by DC Comics in 1989 under the same title featured the Avenger and his agents in an updated, contemporary setting several years after their retirement.

Summary

Richard Henry Benson, aggressive, dominating, cold-eyed, self-made millionaire adventurer, forces himself and family onto a Buffalo/Montreal flight (mother-in-law is dying). He goes to the washroom and his wife and daughter vanish. The other passengers deny having seen them. A frantic Benson is subdued and hospitalized with "brain fever" and head trauma. Recovering, his face and hair are white, his flesh paralyzed and malleable. Investigating, he meets MacMurdie, who DID see Benson's family, and Smitty, who agree to assist him. Benson fights and overcomes Smitty using nerve pressure. Benson has a custom gun and knife (Mike & Ike), shoots to crease the top of the skull, is a master of disguise, and prefers maneuvering enemies into their own traps over killing. THE PLOT: a gang kidnaps wealthy Buffalo residents, drops them from a plane over Lake Ontario, and holds them prisoner on an island, all to get control of a Buffalo company. The three of them end the scheme, but Benson's wife and child are not found alive. The three form Justice, Inc. to bring criminals to justice.

Avenger (pulp-magazine character)

The Avenger is a fictional character whose original adventures appeared between September 1939 and September 1942 in the pulp magazine The Avenger, published by Street & Smith. Five additional short stories were published in Clues Detective magazine (1942–1943), and a sixth novelette in The Shadow magazine in 1943. Newly written adventures were commissioned and published by Warner Brother's Paperback Library from 1973 to 1974. The Avenger was a pulp hero who combined elements of Doc Savage and the Shadow.

The authorship of the pulp series was credited by Street & Smith to Kenneth Robeson, the same byline that appeared on the Doc Savage stories. The "Kenneth Robeson" name was a house pseudonym used by a number of different Street & Smith writers. Most of the original Avenger stories were written by Paul Ernst.

History

In the late 1930s following in the wake of a slew of magazine cancellations (The Skipper, Bill Barnes and The Whisperer "had failed to capture the audience loyalty" of Doc Savage and the Shadow) Street & Smith circulation manager Henry William Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic set out to create a new hero combining elements of Doc Savage and the Shadow. They obtained advice from Lester Dent and Walter B. Gibson in the creation of the Avenger, and hired writer Paul Ernst. Both Dent and Gibson met with Ernst to give him advice on his stories, Dent focused on characterization and Gibson on plotting. The character of the Avenger, described by pulp expert Don Hutchison as "clearly an effort to form a hybrid of the company's more successful creations", echoed his forebears in other ways also. Whereas Doc Savage was known as "The Man of Bronze", the Avenger was described as "The Man of Steel". The Avenger's "marksman's eyes" echoed the "burning eyes" of the Shadow, who continued to be referred to as "The Masked Avenger."

They focused not just on comics, but on toys, on interviewing creators, on movies, trading cards, games, books, tv shows and alot more. In March 2011, Wizard collapsed. They tried to relaunch as an online geek culture magazine but ultimately failed and continued strictly with conventions. Why Wizard magazine failed is because at the time of their drastic decline, people began going to youtube and comicbookmovie.com for everything they recieved from the publisher. It was free and they could interact with the community. With Comicbookmovie.com anyone could create an article and share it with the community and if it was well recieved it got front page status. It's very similar with youtube. Only rather than creating an article, creators launch video channels. Most channels revolve around 1 thing and 1 thing only. Today there are hundreds of channels in the geek culture niche which focus on either comic books or movie reviews or toy reviews or tv show reviews or funko pops or interviews or fantasy battles. However, none of these channels bring all of those things together like Wizard magazine did Successfully for almost 20 years. This is where Comicgeddon TV breaks away from the crowd. We are a small youtube channel with big ideas. From the very beginning, I dreamed of making Comicgeddon an evolved form of Wizard Magazine. I wanted to appeal to the youtube generation. Comicgeddon TV, brings something to the community that was lost when Wizard Magazine became an exclusive convention promoter. And even now, Conventions are occurring to often they're losing attendance. But Comicgeddon TV is there to fill the gap. Justice, Inc. (role-playing game)

Justice, Inc. is a role-playing game designed to simulate the adventure stories in the pulp magazines of the 1930s.

It was one of the first non-superhero applications of the point-based game system that had been developed for the Champions superhero game. The generalized point system would eventually be published as the Hero System, following in the footsteps of Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing System, but preceding GURPS as a non-genre-specific game system.

Publishing History

Justice, Inc. was published in July 1984 by Hero Games, and was written by Aaron Allston, Steve Peterson and Michael Stackpole. The two-volume set included a rulebook and campaign book containing a discussion of the pulp genre, the "Empire Club" campaign setting, a timeline of real-world events of the 1920s and '30s, and several pulp adventures.

Two supplements were published:

Lands of Mystery (May 1985), a critically acclaimed sourcebook describing how to design and run "Lost World" adventures, like those found in the fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. Rider Haggard. ISBN 0-917481-60-7

Instead, there would be Fergus Mac Murdie, Algernon Heathcote Smith, Nellie Gray, along with a few more. What's in a name? Why don't you learn the names and see how sharp your memory is! We might conduct a quiz on the associates of The Avenger. Anyway, meet the healthy, extremely knowledgeable, globe-trotting adventurer, Richard Henry Benson, the famous pulp hero of Street & Smith. Just like Conan, the Barbarian was created out of the Kull stories by Robert E. Howard in Weird Tales Magazine, The Avenger, was created in September 1939 by combining two other S&S pulp heroes, The Shadow and Doc Savage. Author Paul Ernst was engaged to develop and write about "The Avenger" under the house name Kenneth Robeson. Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage, and Walter Gibson, author of "The Shadow," guided Paul Ernst to merge the two famous characters into The Avenger. In the first story of The Avenger, titled "Justice Inc," we are introduced to Richard Henry Benson and his family, who have simply disappeared from a flight without a trace. The shock of losing the family converted Richard Henry Benson into the Avenger, avenging all crimes that cross his way. He was joined by others who had suffered in a similar manner. Together, they formed a "Justice Inc" group to provide justice to anyone suffering in a similar way. Apart from the magazine, a radio show was also organized at the same time featuring pulp stories. Comics were not left behind. The stories of the Avenger and "Justice Inc" were adapted into comics, initially as backup stories in S&S but later adapted by DC comics. Warner Paperback Library did paperback reprints of the Avenger in the 1970s. In recent times, Moonstone Books has published three volumes of avenger stories by a variety of authors. Doc Savage rests in the memories of those lucky few who cared enough to watch the film or pick up a comic or two of this man whom Sony calls the world’s first superhero. He may not be the most famous pulp superhero but he was certainly one of the most influential ones. He was published in 1933 before heroes like Superman and Batman. Stan Lee and his likes have called him the progenitor of modern superheroes. This character was jam-packed with abilities, skills and powers, all of which he used to fight bad guys and bring them to justice. Doc Savage has Sherlock Holmes’s mental abilities, Tarzan’s strength, Bruce Banner’s scientific knowledge, and Captain America’s righteousness and goodness. Doc Savage was created at Street & Smith Publications by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic, but the main contributor was Lester Dent. In 1975, director and producer George Pal made ‘Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze’, with Ron Ely in the titular role. Later, cinema greats like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chris Hemsworth, and Dwayne Johnson were just about to play Doc Savage in films, but the projects never saw the light of day due to developmental or other issues. However, Marvelous Videos hasn’t forgotten to pay its respect and tribute to this great comic character that had a humble beginning in pulp magazines but went on to enjoy the respect of anyone who wanted to write or create anything on the lines of fantasy and adventure. Wizard Magazine was a new type of magazine for all geek culture. They focused not just on comics, but on toys, on interviewing creators, on movies, trading cards, games, books, tv shows and alot more. In March 2011, Wizard collapsed. They tried to relaunch as an online geek culture magazine but ultimately failed and continued strictly with conventions. Why Wizard magazine failed is because at the time of their drastic decline, people began going to youtube and comicbookmovie.com for everything they recieved from the publisher. It was free and they could interact with the community. With Comicbookmovie.com anyone could create an article and share it with the community and if it was well recieved it got front page status. It's very similar with youtube. Only rather than creating an article, creators launch video channels. Most channels revolve around 1 thing and 1 thing only. Today there are hundreds of channels in the geek culture niche which focus on either comic books or movie reviews or toy reviews or tv show reviews or funko pops or interviews or fantasy battles. However, none of these channels bring all of those things together like Wizard magazine did Successfully for almost 20 years. This is where Comicgeddon TV breaks away from the crowd. We are a small youtube channel with big ideas. From the very beginning, I dreamed of making Comicgeddon an evolved form of Wizard Magazine. I wanted to appeal to the youtube generation. Comicgeddon TV, brings something to the community that was lost when Wizard Magazine became an exclusive convention promoter. And even now, Conventions are occurring to often they're losing attendance. But Comicgeddon TV is there to fill the gap. We focus on Dramatically narrating comic books panel by panel in a similar manner as Comicstorian. We focus on bringing to you the history of lesser known characters and publishers similar to Comics Explained. We focus on bringing you Toy and Funko Pop Reviews in the same manner as The Review Spot. We focus on comic book reviews in the same manner as Caped Joel. We Focus on TV show and Movie Reviews similar to Jeremy Jahns or Chris Stuckmann. We focus on Horror like Hermie and StitchedTogetherPics. While we are similar to these channels, we are also very different. We bring all of this Geek Culture Greatness into one place.
