Payer led several sledge expeditions to explore the new-discovered lands,
on one of them reaching 81° 50′ North.
In May 1874 boat captain Weyprecht decided to abandon the ice-locked ship

The Tegetthoff with her crew of 24 left Tromsø in July 1872. At the end of August she got locked in pack-ice north of Novaya Zemlya and drifted to hitherto unknown polar regions. It was on this drift when the explorers discovered an archipelago which they named Franz-Josef Land after Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The main ship was the Tegetthoff, named for the Austrian Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, under whom Weyprecht served. The ship was built by Teklenborg & Beurmann in Bremerhaven. It was a three-masted schooner of 220 tons, 38.34 m long, with a 100 (75 kW) steam engine. The crew came from all over Austria-Hungary, especially from Istria and Dalmatia.
In May 1874 boat captain Weyprecht decided to abandon the ice-locked ship and try to return by sledges and boats. On 14 August 1874 the expedition reached the open sea and on 3 September finally set foot on Russian mainland.
The expedition returned to Austria by train from Bremen. Underway, they were invited to dinner parties hosted by different German geographical societies. They entered Vienna in triumph, welcomed, according to contemporary newspaper reports, by hundred thousands of people.[citation needed]
Significance
The expedition's discoveries and experiences made a significant contribution to polar science, especially the discovery of the Northeast passage by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. They also gave an impetus to International Polar Years, meaning a shift from sports-like races of single expeditions to worldwide scientific cooperation in exploring the polar regions.
The expedition yielded various results in the fields of meteorology, astronomy, geodesy, magnetism, zoology, and sightings of aurora borealis. They were published by the Academy of Sciences in 1878. Besides, there are a book (The Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition 1872-74) and paintings by Payer - probably the only paintings of a polar expedition created by the explorer himself.
The expedition was selected as main motif for the Austrian Admiral Tegetthoff Ship and The Polar Expedition commemorative coin minted on June 8, 2005. The reverse side of the coin shows two explorers in Arctic gear with the frozen ship behind them. Jump to: navigation, search

Location of the Franz Josef Archipelago
The Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition was an expedition that ran from 1872--74 and discovered Franz-Josef Land. According to Julius von Payer, one of the leaders, the journey was to find the north-eastern passage. It actually explored the area northwest of Novaya Zemlya. According to the other leader, Karl Weyprecht, the north pole was a secondary target. The financing was an estimated total costs 175,000 florins from Austro-Hungarian nobles. The two main financial contributors were Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek (1837--1922) and Hungarian Count Ödön Zichy (1811--1894)

Plot of a true tale.
In 1872 takes place the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition: a crew of 24 people sails with the Admiral Tegetthoff, heading for the North.
Their journey will soon become a frozen hell: their ship gets stuck in the pack and they are forced in spending two winters in the North. They will discover an unknown land that they will name "Franz Joseph Land", but to avoid a third and probably lethal winter over there, they make their way through the pack, marching with 4 boats stuffed with food and other things they need to survive. They finally find a Russian ship near Novaja Zemlja that will take them home.
All those men suffer of many diseases during the arctic years, but they get back, except one: Otto Krisch, who dies because of a lung disease and will be buried on Franz Joseph Land ground.

Personal note.
I have just read this book by Christoph Ransmayr, titled "The Terrors of Ice and Darkness", (in Italian it's "Gli Orrori dei Ghiacci e delle Tenebre") and I've been strongly hit by it.
Tough it's told another minor tale, regarding a character named Josef Mazzini, the main line is the 1874 expedition. Those men live again through the pages, because of words taken by their diaries, so it's like they tell us their stories in first person; and this thought moved me to tears.
Julius Payer, one of the commander, was also an artist, a painter in particular, and the image you see in my video is one of his works, titled "Starvation Cove" and made in 1897. It's a very powerful image, possibly it represents some other Polar expedition, but during the march among the pack it probably wasn't very different for the desperate crew of the Admiral Tegetthoff. And also this picture has been used as the book cover for the Italian edition of the book, so that's why I used it.
The music is taken from the OST of Final Fantasy X: this emotional music was created for a scene of death and sadness, but also hope (to guide the souls on their way to the Heaven), so for me was good to use.
The video is meant to be a kind of a tribute for those men, and also a way to put outside the powerful emotions I got reading this book.
Oh, and the headlines you see in the video at the beginning and at the end are titles of chapters 3 and 15.
