February 28th, 2009. In one of the best fights of the last decade, Juan Manuel Marquez aka “Dinamita” takes on Juan Diaz aka “Baby Bull” in a Lightweight showdown with the vacant WBA & WBO Lightweight Titles on the line. At this time, Marquez was ranked by Ring Magazine as the No. 2 Best Pound for Pound Fighter in the World (2nd only to Manny Pacquiao) while Diaz was ranked as the No. 2 Lightweight by the same publication.
Prefight records; Marquez 49(36)-4-1, Diaz 34(17)-1.
Up to this point, Diaz had suffered a lone less against Nate Campbell back in March 2008 and was relieved of his IBF, WBA & WBO Lightweight Titles.
Going into the fight, Diaz the former IBF, WBA & WBO Lightweight Champion held wins over Acelino Freitas, Julien Lorcy, Julio Diaz, Lakva Sim & Michael Katsidis. On the other hand, the veteran Marquez who was World Champion at Featherweight & Super Featherweight had notable victories over Agapito Sanchez, Alfred Kotey, Daniel Jimenez, Derrick Gainer, Joel Casamayor, Manuel Medina, Marco Antonio Barrera, Robbie Peden, Orlando Salido, Rocky Juarez & Victor Polo.
From the 1st round, it was a great fight with explosive exchanges by both men with tremendous ebb and flow and continuous action between a prime young fighter against a seasoned old warrior. Marquez was cut in the 5th while Diaz in the 8th.
However, Diaz’s cut was far worse and in addition to that, he was also badly wobbled by a left uppercut.
In the final minute of the 9th frame, Marquez scored a knockdown with a beautiful combination. Diaz beat the count but Marquez went straight for the kill; connecting with combination set up with a body shot, and a final uppercut put Diaz on the canvas again. This time, referee Rafael Ramos waved off the bout without a count as the Baby Bull was in no position to carry on.
The fight was so intensely action-filled particularly in the early goings, that Marquez by CompuBox Punch Stats had landed more punches in a single fight up to that point. This fight featured many exchanges at close range, and the action was so intense and exciting as the referee elected to allow both men to trade rather than breaking them up.
Marquez-Diaz was named Fight of the Year 2009 by Ring Magazine as well as the BWAA.

July 31st, 2010. After their spectacular Fight of the Year in 2009, Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz faced collided again in a highly anticipated rematch. Marquez’s WBA (Super), WBO & The Ring Lightweight titles were on the line.
Prefight records; Marquez 50(37)-5-1, Diaz 35(17)-3.
In their 1st meeting, both fighters put up one of the most spectacular fights of the decade; where Juan Diaz won most of the early rounds with his relentlessly smart pressure that overwhelmed Marquez, who made adjustments mid way through the fight and started to work the body, countering and throwing precise combinations to dissect Diaz.
In the 8th round, Marquez cut Diaz badly with a left uppercut which became the turning point for the veteran who broke Diaz in the 9th with 2 knockdowns. The final punch was a picture perfect right uppercut from a combination set up with body shots.
The victory made Marquez a Triple Crown World Champion at Featherweight, Super Featherweight & Lightweight.
Going into the rematch, Diaz as the 3-1 betting underdog was extremely confident that he would win although he did not reveal much of his keys to victory. However, he stated that it "involved a delicate balance between brain, brawn, offense and defense".
The Baby Bull had racked up wins over top oppositions in Acelino Freitas, Julien Lorcy, Julio Diaz, Lakva Sim, Michael Katsidis & Paul Malignaggi entering the bout.
On the other hand, Marquez had victories over notable fighters such as Agapito Sanchez, Alfred Kotey, Daniel Jimenez, Derrick Gainer, Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz, Manuel Medina, Marco Antonio Barrera, Orlando Salido, Robbie Peden, Rocky Juarez, Serhii Fedchenko & Victor Polo.
From the opening bell, Diaz’ strategy proved to be ineffective as the 17 year veteran outworked him en route to a clear UD12 victory. Although Diaz came back strong in the last 2 rounds, but he had lost nearly every round leading up to the 10th.
To his credit, the Baby Bull was determined through 36 minutes of action and had his moments but he telegraphed his punches most of the time which enabled the veteran to counter and outbox him with surgical precision. And Marquez, despite being cut over the right eye in the 2nd round was able to school the young challenger.
By the late rounds, Marquez was unable to see through his right eye. However, Ronnie Shields (Diaz’s trainer) surprisingly did not advice his fighter to capitalize on the injury.
After the loss, Diaz retired from the sport before coming back in April 2013 where he picked up 7 straight wins, although none against top opposition. He eventually retired for good in 2016 with a final record of 42(21)-4.
On the other hand, Marquez went 5(3)-2 after the win and retired in 2015. His 2 losses were slim, debatable decisions over top fighters in Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao (their 3rd meeting). Out of his 5 wins, his knockout over Manny Pacquiao is perhaps the sweetest in his 21 year pro career. It was their 4th and final outing in December 2012, where he nailed the Filipino Legend with his patented counter right hand in a win named Knockout of the Year by Ring Magazine.
In his 4 fight rivalry against Pacquiao, Marquez’s KO victory was the only non-disputable denouement to their series of fight as the first of their 3 meetings were very close and (arguably) could have gone either way.
In a pro career that spanned over 3 different decades, he became a Quadruple World Champion at Featherweight, Super Featherweight, Lightweight & Light Welterweight where he defeated a great number of notable oppositions in Agapito Sanchez, Alfred Kotey, Daniel Jimenez, Derrick Gainer, Joel Casamayor, Manuel Medina, Marco Antonio Barrera, Robbie Peden, Orlando Salido, Rocky Juarez, Serhii Fedchenko, Victor Polo, Juan Diaz (2x) but his greatest victory remains his sensational KO of Manny Pacquiao.
** Marquez became a 4 weight world champion by defeating Serhii Fedchenko via TKO9 to garner the WBO Light Welterweight Championship in April 2012.
