The Premier Basketball League, often abbreviated to the PBL, is an American professional men's basketballminor league that began play in January 2008. In the past, there have been teams also in Canada and Puerto Rico. The league season typically operates from January to April.
History
2008 season
The PBL was formed after a number of disagreements between several former member teams of the modern American Basketball Association (ABA) and ABA CEO Joe Newman. Eight of the initial ten PBL teams either played in or were slated to play in the ABA.
In early 2007, Newman was voted out of his position as CEO of the ABA by the board of directors, which included Maryland Nighthawks owner and then-ABA COO Tom Doyle (who was later a commissioner of the PBL), citing dissatisfaction with how Newman executed his duties as CEO. Newman responded by using his and other shares that formed a controlling interest to remove the entire board of directors.
Newman then refused to reschedule a weather-delayed playoff game between the Rochester Razorsharks and Wilmington Sea Dawgs although the two teams agreed to a make up date, wanting instead to force Rochester to accept a forfeit. It was on the heels of these two incidents that the Nighthawks and Razorsharks ownership groups decided to found the PBL.
The Premier Basketball League (formerly: Kompetisi Bola Basket Utama or Kobatama), in Indonesian: Liga Bola Basket Utama, often abbreviated to the PBL, is the pre-eminent semi-professional men's basketball league in Indonesia, competed by 8 clubs across the country. It is organised by Board of PBL Indonesia and sanctioned by Perbasi (Indonesia Basketball Association).
The competition started as Kobatama in 1982. In 2010, Perbasi as the owner of this competition was no longer afford the highest amateur league. Driven by the spirit of togetherness to not suffer the same fate with KOBANITA, the KOBATAMA Council with 8 clubs participants 2009 KOBATAMA and the winner inter-club competitions 2009 National Basketball Championship Division I are determined to keep playing 2010/2011 season by forming a league to fill the void KOBATAMA named Premier Basketball League which is abbreviated PBL sanctioned by Perbasi, through decisions PERBASI Number 287/PB/XI year 2010 dated November 1, 2010 On Implementation of Appointment Letters Premier Basketball League. PBL 2010/2011 organized by the collective cost of 10 club participants, the competition uses a system of full competition two rounds with four compositions qualifying series, and the final four.
The Basketball National League is the pre-eminent men's professional basketballleague in South Africa. Founded in 1993 as the Premier Basketball League, it was disbanded in 1996. However, it was later reformed into the present creation.
The league was renamed the Basketball National League in 2013. Many BNL players and coaches are still involved with the Cape Town Hurricanes Basketball Club.
The Jordanian Premier Basketball League is a professional basketball league in Jordan. It is the top league in the country with the second-tier league going by the name of First Division.
