The Jones Act, a stupid law with a stupid name, restricts domestic shipping to vessels built in America and crewed by Americans.
That hurts consumers. It really hurts suffering people who need supplies after natural disasters.
Unions and big shipping companies love this dumb law because it protects them from competition.
“Your rules really hurt people,” I say to a lobbyist.
"They don’t,” she replies. "What the Jones Act does is ensure reliable, dedicated service."
Give me a break.

How The Government Sank Our Shipping Industry
On this (REUPLOADED) episode of Common Sense Soapbox, Seamus explains to Sarah, Bob, and Ron how the hundred-year-old Jones Act makes the American shipping industry way more expensive than it needs to be. In short, an act that was supposed to protect the industry actually ended up killing it. Watch the episode to learn how.
Sorry for the re-upload guys, we realized that we got some dates wrong in the video and because there are a couple different acts that are referred to as "The Jones Act" because of Rep. Wesley Jones (WA), we didn't want to mislead anyone. We also made a couple other small cuts to make sure that everything was more clear.
Fortunately, it was a pretty easy fix, but we did think it was important.

American Maritime Partnership - Facts About The Jones Act
The Jones Act is critical to the military strategy of the United States, which relies on the use of U.S. flag ships and crews and the availability of a shipyard industrial base to support national defense needs.
The domestic American maritime industry strengthens U.S. national security at zero cost to the federal government. The domestic maritime fleet provides capacity and manpower that the armed forces can draw upon to support U.S. military operations. American ships, crews to man them, ship construction and repair yards, intermodal equipment, terminals, cargo tracking systems, and other infrastructure are available to the U.S. military at a moment’s notice in times of war, national emergency, or even in peacetime.
The Jones Act ensures a strong and vibrant maritime industry, which h...

The Jones Act requires that any vessel sailing between American ports (including those in territories, such as Puerto Rico and Guam) must be American-built, American-owned, and manned by an American crew flying the American flag. Passed as part of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 under the pretense of national defense—the claim was that the U.S. shouldn't be in a position of having to rely on foreign ships during wartime—the Jones Act is just a protectionist racket that drives up costs.
Despite "the absence of any measurable benefits, the Jones Act has persisted for nearly 100 years," said the Cato Institute in a 2017 report. Why? "The small number of beneficiaries, which primarily include domestic shipyards and some labor unions, are more powerfully motivated to preserve the status quo than are the far more numerous adversely affected interests in seeking its repeal."
Here's an idea: Let's scrap it!

The Jones Act ensures a strong and vibrant maritime industry, which helps ensure the United States maintains its expertise in shipbuilding and waterborne transportation. The U.S. Navy’s position is clear—repeal of the Jones Act would “hamper [America’s] ability to meet strategic sealift requirements and Navy shipbuilding.” Without American maritime, the U.S. would be dependent on foreign owned and flagged vessels for the transport of waterborne commerce in and around the country.
