How plant immune systems protect them from disease - Jonathan Jones 🦠😷
While plants are the source of food for almost all other organisms, many of these interactions with other organisms reduce plant growth, either by removal of plant tissues (eating), or by causing plant disease. Bacteria, oomycetes, fungi, insects and other herbivores, viruses, and even other plants can infect or damage plants.
Microbial disease-causing organisms are called pathogens, and herbivores that eat vegetative tissues and seeds (especially those of crops) are referred to as pests. Most plants are resistant to most plant pathogens, and many successful pathogens are highly specialized for their success on particular hosts. So what are plant pathogens? How do they attack plants? And how do plants detect and defend themselves against attack?

"I did Maths/Physics/Chemistry A levels, but switched to Biology at University, hoping to contribute solutions to ecological challenges that were apparent even in 1971. I ended up with a Botany degree, and then a PhD in Genetics at the Plant Breeding Institute in Cambridge, studying wheat cytogenetics. After a postdoc in symbiotic nitrogen fixation in Harvard, I worked in the private sector at Advanced Genetic Sciences, California, where I began making genetically modified plants, investigating the requirements for high-level expression of transgenes. In 1988, I took up my current position at The Sainsbury Lab in Norwich. I love both the technology and the biology in my research. I’ve enjoyed developing new genetic methods investigating and interpreting the molecular basis of disease resistance, and how pathogens circumvent it. I also like to engage with the public as a strong advocate for controlling crop disease using Resistance genes from wild crop relatives introduced via genetic modification and/or gene editing. This year we are resuming field trials to evaluate the use of such genes to confer late blight resistance in GM potato."
Filmed at the Gatsby Plant Science Summer School, 2017.

Artist Stories: Jonathan Jones
Jonathan Jones 'untitled (giran)' is a murmuration of winged sculptures. Made of almost 2,000 sculptures, Jonathan Jones’s 'untitled (giran)' is reminiscent of a map of intersecting wind currents, evoking birds in flight, and knowledge, change and new ideas circling above our heads. The work draws on the Wiradjuri concept of giran which describes the winds, change, as well as feelings of fear and apprehension.
Traditional tools are at the heart of the artwork. Bound to each tool with handmade string is a small bundle of feathers (tiny ‘wings’) – found treasures – carefully gathered and sent to Jones by people from across the country.
The circling murmuration of flying ‘birds’ is composed of six tool types – bagaay – an emu eggshell spoon, bindu-gaany – a freshwater mussel scraper, waybar...

JONATHAN JONES - MIRADA (Official Video)
I’m from Hamburg, Germany, but many years ago, I lost my heart in Mexico. Since then, I’ve been living my passion for the Spanish language, its culture, and music composition. Every song I write tells a story or experience that has shaped me.
In this music video "Mirada," you'll be taken on a journey of love and passion, where every look speaks a thousand words. The video brings these emotions to life, showing moments of deep connection—from dreamy stares under the stars to private parties late at night. The music and visuals take you through the magic of unspoken love, where feelings are shared through nothing more than a "Mirada".
Enjoy the song, and feel free to leave a comment!

The battery is low,
While the ceiling keeps on shrinking,
And the weeds they grow,
In the garden I was sleeping,
How do you restart the feeling,
How I do find some meaning in my love,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Strike up the band,
And the songs that bring me freedom,
From the monsters in my head,
Subtract the paranoia,
How do you restart the feeling,
How do I find some meaning in my love,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Oh does anybody know,

Why the blue moons out to meet him,

He may appear a little dishevelled, with grubby jeans and tattoos. But this homeless busker stops passers-by in their tracks when he starts singing Tom Jones hits in a rich baritone that sounds eerily familiar.
And that, perhaps, is no surprise, for this 29-year-old performing on the streets of a blue-collar town in New Jersey is the music legend's illegitimate son, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Despite his father's £155 million fortune, Jonathan Berkery relies on commuters to drop their spare change into his guitar case, where a makeshift cardboard sign implores: 'I Need Money (Please Help).'
With a busking repertoire that includes Delilah and It's Not Unusual, he goes by the name 'Jon Jones' in tribute to his father.
But Jon – who spends his nights in a homeless shelter in Hoboken and tops up his income with a £5.50-an-hour part-time job stacking shelves – reveals he has never met his famous dad, despite his best efforts to get in touch.
He says: 'I don't want anything from my dad, just his recognition.
'Not having a father growing up was tough. All I ever wanted was his love. People think I look and sound like a younger version of my dad.
'I sing all his songs. People stop and stare as soon as I start singing.'
Jon was born after the Welsh superstar enjoyed a three-day fling with Katherine Berkery, then a 24-year-old model, in New York in October 1987.
Sir Tom denied he was Jon's father until it was proved by a court-ordered paternity test in 1989, and the singer agreed to pay £1,700 a month maintenance for his upkeep until his 18th birthday.
Jon says: 'There was never a birthday card, a single Christmas card, a call. I grew up with images of dad all around. But my calls and emails have gone unreturned. He wants nothing to do with me.'
Sir Tom only acknowledged Jon's existence in 2008, saying: 'It wasn't something I planned. I was tricked. I fell for the seduction.'
It was a cruel blow for Jon, who says: 'Those words hurt. It wasn't my choice to be born. You don't get to be as famous as my father without being prepared to hurt people along the way.'
Jon says his father's rejection led to an angry drink-and-drug-fuelled teenage rebellion and meant he 'couldn't form proper relationships with girls'.
Jon has even considered confronting his dad at one of his concerts or even auditioning for ITV talent show The Voice, where Sir Tom is a mentor.
The irony of his father offering advice to others is not lost on his son, who says: 'All I want is the chance to sit down with him. I truly don't want anything from him.'

LYRICS:
Are you weak in the knees,
Or just incomplete,
Is the joy you had once now gone,
Or are you in last place,
Is this your final race,
Is the crowd still cheering you on
Have you seen a heart break,
From all your mistakes,
Is your life not going as you planned.

The circling murmuration of flying ‘birds’ is composed of six tool types – bagaay – an emu eggshell spoon, bindu-gaany – a freshwater mussel scraper, waybarra – a weaving start, bingal – a bone awl, dhala-ny – a wooden spear point, and galigal – a stone knife. Each tool has limitless potential.

Duracell
The battery is low,
While the ceiling keeps on shrinking,
And the weeds they grow,
In the garden I was sleeping,
How do you restart the feeling,
How I do find some meaning in my love,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Strike up the band,
And the songs that bring me freedom,
From the monsters in my head,
Subtract the paranoia,
How do you restart the feeling,
How do I find some meaning in my love,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Oh does anybody know,
Mr. Grey he knows,
Why the blue moons out to meet him,
And the years they show,
On the couch where he's been sleeping,
Compromised by the treatment,
But he knows somethings missing in his life,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Oh does anybody know,
Oh, whats happening?
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Oh does anybody know,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Oh does anybody know,
Where'd the spirit go,
Where'd the spirit go,
Tell me where'd that spirit go.

LYRICS:
A Vacancy in me, reality's a thief,
Coming in the night to take it all from me,
And I'm falling down from a cloud,
Been weathered by a rain that never goes away,
Everything is gray, just slightly different shades,
And I'm crawling out, life is passing by,
And I'm crying out God can you hear me,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up and search for better days
The tragedy for me, I built my life on sand,
It's moving underneath and now I understand,
That I'm falling down again
Feeling like a curse is hanging over me,
Standing on the edge of everything I've seen,
And I'm climbing out and I'm tangled now,
And I'm crying out God can you hear me,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up and search for better days
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up and search for better days,
Days,
To see beyond the mountain I have made,
Of drinks before I took the stage,
The girls I never caught their names,
The good and bad inside of me collide,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up,
Hold my head up and search for better days,
