Jonah

Jonah or Jonas (Hebrew: יוֹנָה, Modern Yona, Tiberian Yônā ; dove; Arabic: يونس Yūnus, Yūnis or يونان Yūnān ; Latin: Ionas) is the name given in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh/Old Testament) to a prophet of the northern kingdom of Israel in about the 8th century BC. He is the eponymous central character in the Book of Jonah, famous for being swallowed by a fish or a whale, depending on translation. The biblical story of Jonah is repeated, with a few notable differences, in the Qur'an.

Story of Jonah

Jonah is identified as the son of Amittai, and he appears in 2 Kings aka 4 Kings as a prophet from Gath-Hepher, a few miles north of Nazareth. He is therein described as being active during the reign of the second King Jeroboam (c.786–746 BC), and as predicting that Jeroboam will recover certain lost territories.

Jonah is the central character in the Book of Jonah. Commanded by God to go to the city of Nineveh to prophesy against it "for their great wickedness is come up before me," Jonah instead seeks to flee from "the presence of the Lord" by going to Jaffa, identified as Joppa or Joppe, and sailing to Tarshish, which, geographically, is in the opposite direction. A huge storm arises and the sailors, realizing that it is no ordinary storm, cast lots and discover that Jonah is to blame. Jonah admits this and states that if he is thrown overboard, the storm will cease. The sailors try to dump as much cargo as possible before giving up, but feel forced to throw him overboard, at which point the sea calms. The sailors then offer sacrifices to God. Jonah is miraculously saved by being swallowed by a large whale-like fish in whose belly he spends three days and three nights. While in the great fish, Jonah prays to God in his affliction and commits to thanksgiving and to paying what he has vowed. God commands the fish to spew Jonah out.

Jonah from Tonga

Jonah from Tonga is an Australian television series written by and starring comedian Chris Lilley. The mockumentary series follows Jonah Takalua, a rebellious 14-year-old Australian boy of Tongan descent who had been introduced in Lilley's 2007 series Summer Heights High. At the conclusion of that series, Jonah was expelled from Summer Heights High. In this series, his father, Rocky Takalua, has sent him back to his homeland of Tonga to live with his uncle and their family in order to get Jonah's life back on track. The six part series was produced by Princess Pictures and Chris Lilley in conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and screened on ABC1 in Australia, HBO in America, and BBC Three in the UK.

The entire series was available for streaming online for one weekend from 2 May to 4 May on BBC iPlayer and ABC iview, before starting a six-week run on ABC1 on 7 May 2014 and from 8 May on BBC Three. This was a first for a major Australian TV production. The series itself was a "ratings disaster" for both the ABC and BBC. It was later announced that the entire series would screen at select cinemas in several Australian cities followed by a Q and A with Chris Lilley. These events were subsequently cancelled, with refunds given and the website created to promote them removed.

  • Unlocking the Old Testament Part 51 - Jonah

As David Pawson looks at Jonah, he says that God would give a message to a prophet in either words or pictures and it would become like a burden within them until delivered. The message could be of challenge when people were doing wrong, or of comfort when they were on the right track. Sadly, most of the prophets, like Jonah, had to challenge. Jonah came from the same village as Jesus, Nazareth. He was called to go to Assyria’s capital, Nineveh. The Assyrians were a particularly cruel people. Because of the strange story of Jonah being swallowed by a large fish when he tried to run away from his mission, many people take it as a myth or parable. David explains why he believes it is factual. He also says when you’ve answered the question of why Jonah ran away, the whole book will open up to...

Lyrics God decided to speak to Jonah And to Nineveh He sent him that day 'Cause all its wicked men needed the Word of salvation. Jonah got into the first ship He knew was sailing the opposite way, Defied the Lord’s command and chose to flee without hesitation. Jonah, you know My mercy is for everyone And all My grace embraces the one who is heartly praying. Jonah, you’d better keep in mind and take to heart That I’m the only God who loves with a love unfailing. Suddenly the wind started blowing, A mighty storm was threatening the ship So Jonah told the crew to throw him away in the waves. Then the raging sea was silent, A fish swallowed Jonah with a sip And in its belly he prayed crying for three nights and days. Jonah, you know My mercy is for everyone And all My grace embraces the one who is heartly praying. Jonah, you’d better keep in mind and take to heart That I’m the only God who loves with a love unfailing. Learning the obedience lesson, The prophet was released at God’s command, To Nineveh he rushed spreading the Word of salvation. The wicked people prayed and repented, But Jonah didn’t seem to understand What God had in mind when He offered them restauration. Jonah, you know My mercy is for everyone And all My grace embraces the one who is heartly praying. Jonah, you’d better keep in mind and take to heart That I’m the only God who loves with a love unfailing. I am well aware God is justice, But why He choses to forgive I don’t get, When people brake His heart sinning and hurting each other. I am well aware God is loving, But I don’t know what makes Him love us so much, Forever holding us all redeemed in the arms of the Father. Especially Jonah!

He also says when you’ve answered the question of why Jonah ran away, the whole book will open up to you. There are 8 physical miracles in the story of Jonah, not just one. This book shows us that God is still in control of the world he created. This is an enlightening study. David also has a book on this series find out more here: https://www.davidpawson.co.uk/search/?mediaID=1920 Free resources and a library of Davids teachings are available from www.davidpawson.org ©️David Pawson Ministry CIO 1995

You can read more in-depth Bible verses from the Scripture below and use the articles and videos to understand the meaning behind this teachable event in the Bible.God called to Jonah one day and told him to go preach to Nineveh because the people were very wicked. Jonah hated this idea because Nineveh was one of Israel's greatest enemies and Jonah wanted nothing to do with preaching to them! Jonah tried to run away from God in the opposite direction of Nineveh and headed by boat to Tarsish. God sent a great storm upon the ship and the men decided Jonah was to blame so they threw him overboard. As soon as they tossed Jonah in the water, the storm stopped. God sent a big fish, some call it a whale, to swallow Jonah and to save him from drowning. While in the belly of the big fish (whale), Jonah prayed to God for help, repented, and praised God. For three days Jonah sat in the belly of the fish. Then, God had the big fish throw up Jonah onto the shores of Nineveh. Jonah preached to Nineveh and warned them to repent before the city is destroyed in 40 days. The people believed Jonah, turned from their wickedness, and God had mercy on them. Jonah now became angry and bitter because God did not destroy the Ninevites who were Israels enemy! When Jonah sat to rest God provided a vine to give him shade. The next day, God sent a worm to eat the vine. Jonah now sat in the hot sun complaining and wanting to die. God called out to Jonah and scolded him for being so concerned and worried about just a plant while God was concerned with the heart condition and lives of 120,000 people who lived in the city of Nineveh.
